Officers Arrest Hit and Run Suspect When He Returns to Accident Scene

Occurred on 9/23/11, 11:07 p.m.  Major Accident   4700 Leopard   C1106860/1109230161 

Officers responded to the 4 700 block of Leopard for an accident involving a pedestrian.  Officers arrived to find a 56-year-old Hispanic male lying deceased next to the roadway.  A witness reported to Officers the victim was attempting to cross Leopard at the corner of Flood Street when he was struck. The driver failed to stop and fled eastbound on Leopard. 

While Officers were blocking the roadway and securing the crime scene, when the hit and run vehicle returned to the accident site.  The driver again failed to stop or attempt to contact Officers.  An Officer observed the silver Hyundai Sonata to have a damaged windshield and followed the suspect vehicle.   

Officers were able to stop the Sonata over at the Stripes Convenience Store parking lot located at Leopard and Baldwin.  Officers observed the driver throw a beer can out the window as he pulled over.   

The driver Clarence Edward Perkins Jr. (07/23/64) appeared to be intoxicated when contacted.  He was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a Blood Draw was taken. 

Through further investigation, Officers were able to determine Perkins was the hit and run suspect. Perkins was arrested and charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter with a Vehicle and an Accident Involving Injure or Death. 

The deceased’s identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of family members.
