Police responded to the area of IH 37 and Callicoate for a welfare concern after receiving 911 calls for a woman and several children on the side of the road. While Officers were en route the call was upgraded to a major accident involving a pedestrian.
Upon their arrival, Officers discovered a 21-year-old man had been hit by a vehicle who sped away. He was taken to Spohn Memorial with back pain and foot injury.
Officers contacted the 53-year-old woman who told Officers she was hit in the face by her daughter’s drunken boyfriend as she was driving along IH 37. The suspect had earlier assaulted her daughter who was also in the vehicle. The woman pulled over unable to drive safely and attempted to flag down several vehicles, but no one stopped. She grabbed her six-month-old grandson, her three and seven-year-old granddaughters and ran down the access road to get away from the suspect.
The woman told Police she looked back and saw her assailant standing in the middle of IH 37, flagging cars down. An 18-wheeler slowed and swerved to avoid hitting him, but shortly thereafter, he was struck by a white vehicle. No other description on the suspect vehicle.
