A 17-year-old woman suffered a gunshot to the leg Thursday night when her friends discharged a firearm at the Oso Creek Park.

Corpus Christi Police were called to Spohn South Hospital at 10:50pm to investigate a crime after a 17-year-old woman was brought in for treatment for a gunshot wound. The 17-year-old woman and her friends told investigating officers that the friends shot cups at Oso Creek Park and the 17-year-old woman was accidentally injured.

An 18 year old woman drove the 17-year-old woman to the hospital. The investigating officers identified others in the group as a 19-year-old man, a 17-year-old woman other than the injured woman, and a 17-year-old man who owned the Ruger .22 Model 10/22 rifle.

The rifle was collected by police while the investigation continues.

Corpus Christi Police want to remind the public of four safety rules when operating firearms: 1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded; 2. Never point at anything you’re not willing to destroy; 3. Keep everything off the trigger until on target; 4. Be sure of the target and what is beyond the target.

Discharging a firearm inside the city limits is very dangerous and Police urge everyone not to discharge firearms in the air in a celebratory manner for New Year’s. The violation is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine if no one is injured. When the bullet returns to the ground, the projectile may strike a person and is capable of causing serious injury or death. Celebrate responsibly and leave the firearms in a safe place.
