Patrol Officers were dispatched to the 5900 block of Ayers for a major accident.  Officers’ investigation revealed a 46–year-old man who was driving a white dually pickup had turned northbound onto Ayers when he observed a silver Hyundai Elantra drift southbound across the center line into his lane.  The truck driver swerved right, but the Elantra struck the dually by the front driver’s door.  The vehicles sideswiped until the front of the car struck the dually axle.  The impact spun the car around and knocked the pickup’s axel off the frame.

The 28-year-old woman’s 5-year-old son who was in a car seat in the back seat of the Elantra suffered a severe laceration to his forehead.  He was rushed to Driscoll Children’s Hospital with a possibly life-threatening injury.  The truck driver was uninjured, but the car’s driver Rebecca Velma Benavides (02/13/85) showed signs of intoxication and field sobriety tests were administered.  A blood warrant was also obtained.

Rebecca Velma Benavides (02/13/85) was medically cleared at Spohn Memorial and arrested.  Benavides was charged with Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle.
