Patrol Report 01/26/2015

The Corpus Christi Police Department generated 189 reports for formal criminal complaints from midnight January 25 to 7:00 a.m. on January 26, 2015. These are samples of the criminal complaints filed by the Corpus Christi Police for that time period.


“Adam” District

Corpus Christi Police responded to a disturbance at a residence located in the 9800 block of Leopard Street.

Officers were told that Danny Schmitgen (02/28/1969) went to his ex-wife’s home and stole his 24 year old daughter’s 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier.  As his estranged family was trying to stop him from taking the car, the suspect hit his ex-wife’s 43 year old boyfriend with the car knocking him to the ground before getting away.  The boyfriend suffered only a bruised leg.

The suspect drove the stolen Chevrolet down the street to an abandoned business near the intersection of Leopard Street and Princess Street where he had his truck parked. He hid the Chevrolet in the back of the business, and drove to his truck to his home in the 10100 block of Kingsbury Street.  An officer on patrol spotted him pulling into his driveway on Kingsbury Street and stopped him.

After an investigation it was determined that the suspect has an active protective order prohibiting him from going to his ex-wife’s home, as well as, an outstanding warrant for his arrest for violating the protective order on an earlier occasion.  The suspect was additionally charged with aggravated assault for striking the boyfriend with the car as he fled, and for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for stealing his daughters car.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer on patrol saw a vehicle drive into a fire hydrant while it was traveling south on Waldron Road.

The 2011 BMW four door left the roadway at the Waldron Road and Crestline Street intersection and struck the fire hydrant that was on the west side of the street.  The officer observed that the vehicle did not stop after the crash.  The suspect vehicle continued traveling south, turning on Hustling Hornet Drive, where the officer was able to stop the car.

After an investigation it was determined that the driver, Michael Staton (10/26/1994), was intoxicated and after being treated at Spohn Shoreline Hospital he was arrested.

It was estimated that the damage done to the fire hydrant was nearly $2000.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call about the front window of a business being shot out.

Officers arrived at My Favorite Muffin located at 3920 South Padre Island Drive and found the front glass door of the business to be shattered.  It did not appear as though anyone entered the business.

Officers did locate five .40 caliber casings in the roadway in front of the business.  Damage to the business was estimated to be at least $500.

Officers are still investigating this case and no arrests have been made.

A cab driver called Corpus Christi Police after he was assaulted and robbed by a customer in the 1500 block of Ormond Street.

Officers arrived and found a Green and Go cab parked in the middle of the street with a male lying on the ground next to the vehicle. The male, Mariano Perez-Martinez (10-17-1959), had a laceration to his head.

The 60 year old cab driver was also located nearby and he told officers that he had picked up the man at a bar located at 3309 Ayers Street. The male suspect appeared highly intoxicated and could only tell the driver that he lived somewhere on Ormond Street but didn’t know which house. When they arrived on the street, the cab driver asked to be paid. The suspect became angry and pulled out a box cutter knife and cut the driver twice on his left thumb. The driver attempted to drive away and the offender jumped from the vehicle falling out and hitting his head on the pavement causing the laceration.

CCFD EMS transported the suspect to Spohn Memorial Medical Center for treatment. Once there the suspect began swinging and kicking at the medical staff and had to be restrained to the bed. Once cleared by medical staff the suspect was transported to the City Detention Center and arrested for aggravated robbery.

The cab driver was treated at the scene by CCFD EMS.

Corpus Christi Police and the fire department responded to an apartment building located at 637 Mohawk Street for a structure fire.

As officers were assisting the fire department, a 19 year old female victim came running up to them and said she had been assaulted by her 26 year old boyfriend and that he had started the fire. The victim stated she had a male friend over and the suspect came home and became angry. He began hitting the female and she was able to run to a neighbor’s house.

After she left the suspect took all of the victims under garments and put them on top of the gas stove and turned the burners on. After the clothing was ignited the suspect fled the scene.

Arson investigators from the fire department confirmed the victim’s story as to how the fire had started. Officers checked the area for the suspect, but he was not located.

Both the police and fire department will continue to investigate this case. At this time the male suspect has not been arrested.
