Police Catch Man Filling Up Stolen Truck With Gas on Airline Road

A 46-year-old man was arrested Monday morning for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle when an alert Corpus Christi Police Officer saw the man fill up with gas at Airline and Holly.

A Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officer pulled into a gas station at the intersection of Airline and Holly Road at 1:47 in the morning and saw an unoccupied red 1999 FordF-150 pickup truck at the fuel pump. The officer saw the truck had no front license plate displayed. The officer circled to the back of the truck and checked the Texas license plate displayed on the rear of the truck.

The officer was notified the license plate displayed was reported as a stolen license plate from Corpus Christi on December 26, 2012. The Officer stopped a 46-year-old man who crossed the street from the gas station as a possible person who brought the truck to the fuel pump. The officer then discovered the truck was reported stolen out of George West.

The officer found evidence the 46-year-old man, Leonel Soliz (8/16/1966), had driven the truck to the fuel pump. The Police Officer then discovered methamphetamines in the truck during an inventory.

Soliz was arrested for possession of a controlled substance from penalty group 1, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (both state jail felony offenses), and for theft for the stolen license plate (a Class B Misdemeanor). Soliz was then delivered to the Corpus Christi city detention center.

Woman Shoots Man on Chippewa Street

               A 36-year-old man was injured by a gunshot to the arm Sunday afternoon at the 3600 block of Chippewa Street near Hiawatha.

A gray car was parked at the 3600 block of Chippewa Street at about 3:10pm. A 36-year-old man stood outside the window to the car and a Hispanic woman sat in the passenger side of the car.  The woman presented a pistol and shot the 36-year-old man once in the arm and the car sped away.

The 36-year-old man presented a pistol and fired several shots at the car. The 36-year-old man then ran from the scene, and was later found at a local hospital to seek treatment for his non-life threatening injury.

Corpus Christi Police collected evidence from the scene and gathered information from witnesses. The Investigating officers discovered the victim of this aggravated assault has previously been convicted of a felony and he was in possession of a firearm.

Corpus Christi Police continue to investigate the aggravated assault and investigate any violation of law for the unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Man Barricades Himself In Home To Avoid Arrest on Talisman Street

               A 55-year-old man was arrested safely Friday night after he barricaded himself in his home for about an hour and a half on the 1800 block of Talisman Street.

Corpus Christi Police were called to a disturbance at 8:40pm on the 1800 block of Talisman Street Friday night. A 32-year-old woman called police and said her 55-year-old friend, Juan Medina (7/2/1957) shot at her with a pistol. The woman said she was not injured and was able to get away from Medina.

The 32-year-old woman said she and Medina became involved in a disturbance which escalated to the point that Medina shot once in her direction. The 32-year-old woman said Medina was intoxicated and at his house alone.

Corpus Christi Police went to the house; but, Medina went into the house and refused to meet with the police officers. Medina was armed, had fired one shot at a person, and had gone into a shelter to a hidden position, so the Corpus Christi SWAT team and the Hostage Negotiating team were summoned to seek a peaceful end to the event.

The 4000 block of Niagra Street and the 1800 block of Talisman Street were closed to traffic for the duration of the negotiation. Several neighbors were displaced from their home to keep them at a safe distance during the event.

Medina was safely arrested at 10:40pm by the Corpus Christi SWAT team for Aggravated Assault (a 1st degree felony), Unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (a 3rd degree felony), and for unlawful restraint (a Class A misdemeanor). Medina was then delivered to the city detention center.

Police Arrest 2 Men For Burglary on Nemec Street

                Two men were arrested Friday morning for burglary of a habitation on the 2500 block of Nemec Street.

A 21-year-old woman was in her home at 12:20am when there was a knock at her door. The 21-year-old woman looked outside and recognized one of two men who stood at the front door. The two men broke the front door open and entered the house while the woman ran to the back of the house.

The two men took a laptop computer and a cell phone from the couch where the woman sat before the knock at the door. The two men left the home, and the uninjured woman called Corpus Christi Police.

Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officers arrived and met the victim, then broadcast a description of the red 4 door passenger car used by the two suspects in this burglary. An other Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officer found the red passenger car with the two suspects and arrested 20-year-old Zachary Ozuna (5/29/1992) and 20-year-old Luis Cadena (5/15/1992) for burglary.

Both men were delivered to the city detention center and the laptop was returned to the owner.

17 Year Old Woman Injured By Friends Gunshot

               A 17-year-old woman suffered a gunshot to the leg Thursday night when her friends discharged a firearm at the Oso Creek Park.

Corpus Christi Police were called to Spohn South Hospital at 10:50pm to investigate a crime after a 17-year-old woman was brought in for treatment for a gunshot wound. The 17-year-old woman and her friends told investigating officers that the friends shot cups at Oso Creek Park and the 17-year-old woman was accidentally injured.

An 18 year old woman drove the 17-year-old woman to the hospital. The investigating officers identified others in the group as a 19-year-old man, a 17-year-old woman other than the injured woman, and a 17-year-old man who owned the Ruger .22 Model 10/22 rifle.

The rifle was collected by police while the investigation continues.

Corpus Christi Police want to remind the public of four safety rules when operating firearms: 1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded; 2. Never point at anything you’re not willing to destroy; 3. Keep everything off the trigger until on target; 4. Be sure of the target and what is beyond the target.

Discharging a firearm inside the city limits is very dangerous and Police urge everyone not to discharge firearms in the air in a celebratory manner for New Year’s. The violation is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine if no one is injured. When the bullet returns to the ground, the projectile may strike a person and is capable of causing serious injury or death. Celebrate responsibly and leave the firearms in a safe place.

Police Investigate Kidnapping on Braesvally Drive

                An 11 year old girl was taken by force from the 7000 block of Braesvalley Drive Thursday evening and was returned to her family about an hour and a half later.

An 11 year old girl rode her bicycle on the 7000 block of Braesvalley Drive with a 13-year-old boy who walked his dog at about 7:20pm. A red 4 door sport utility vehicle drove up to the 11-year-old girl. A man got out of the passenger side of the S.U.V. and grabbed the 11-year-old girl and then the man forced the girl into the S.U.V. The 13-year-old boy released his dog and the dog attacked the man in the S.U.V.

The S.U.V. then left the area with the 11-year-old girl. The man who got out of the passenger side of the S.U.V. is described as a white man, about 20 years old, and he wore a red letterman jacket with a white circle on the chest.

The 11-year-old girl was found by Corpus Christi Police at about 9:00pm on Padre Island. The suspects responsible for this crime were not located. The girl had no apparent injury but was immediately taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital for an evaluation.

Vehicle Crash Disrupts Traffic on IH 37 at Navigation Blvd

The northbound lanes of the Interstate Highway 37 near Navigation were reduced for about half an hour Wednesday afternoon as emergency crews worked a single vehicle crash in which Police discovered a felon in possession of a firearm.

Corpus Christi Police and Fire crews responded to a single vehicle crash on the freeway of the Interstate Highway 37 near Navigation Boulevard at 12:50pm. A gray 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis was operated by a 32-year-old man on the 5100 block of Interstate Highway 37. The 32-year-old man lost control of the Grand Marquis and struck the center concrete divider. The impact broke the left rear wheel off of the car and the Grand Marquis travelled across the highway and struck a steel barrier.

The 32-year-old operator was taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-incapacitating injuries.  The 42-year-old woman passenger was not injured.

Corpus Christi Police Crash Investigators consider speed to have been a contributing factor for the crash.  Police Officers discovered the 32-year-old man has a history of a conviction for a felony offense. Police Officers discovered a firearm with the 32-year-old man which prompted an investigation for any violation of a felon in possession of a firearm.

No citations were issued and no other vehicles or people were involved in the crash. The roadway was reopened to normal use at 1:30pm.

Police Take Two Juveniles Into Custody For Burglary at Elementary School

Corpus Christi Police took an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy into custody for burglary after they were found inside Blanche Moore Elementary School stealing supplies on Sunday night.

The Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officers were called to investigate an alarm at Blanche Moore Elementary School at 9:20pm. The responding officers saw a light on inside one of the classrooms and saw two juvenile boys inside the classroom looking through a cabinet.

One boy, who is 11 years old, was apprehended as he exited the school building. Police Officers then entered the building to apprehend the second boy who is 12 years old.

The boys were found with markers and notepads taken from the school supply inventory which amounted to $51 in value. The investigating officers found that a window had been left unlocked which was the point of entry for the two boys. There was no noted damage to the school.

The property was returned to the school, the officers locked the school, and the two juveniles were delivered to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center for Burglary of a Building, a state jail felony offense.

Police Investigate Traffic Crash on Snowgoose & Believe Alcohol As A Factor

                Corpus Christi Police believe alcohol was a contributing factor to a crash in which a Camaro struck a brick fence and then damaged two other vehicles on the 5200 block of Snowgoose Road Wednesday morning.

A 23-year-old man drove a black 2012 Chevrolet Camaro at a high rate of speed on the 5200 block of Snowgoose Road at about 2:00am on Wednesday morning. The Camaro failed to negotiate a turn in the road and then struck a brick fence, and then struck a parked blue 1998 Mercury sedan in the driveway of a residence.

Bricks from the fence were thrown and damaged a silver 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup parked in the driveway of a second residence. There was also damage done to a house and the property owner estimated the damage at $32,000.

The 23-year-old man who drove the Camaro ran from the crash scene, but was later apprehended by Corpus Christi Police. The 23-year-old man was taken to the hospital and released for medical treatment. Corpus Christi Police crash investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash and continue to investigate.

Corpus Christi Police made 28 arrests for impaired driving between December 21, and December 26, 2012. There were 19 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated; 2 arrests for D.W.I. with one previous conviction; 2 arrests for D.W.I. with two or more previous convictions; 2 arrests for D.W.I. with an open alcoholic beverage container in the vehicle; 2 arrests for D.W.I. with a blood alcohol concentration over .15; and 1 arrest for Driving Under the Influence (the driver was under the age of 21).

The Corpus Christi Police Department wants everyone to drive safely and designate a driver if they choose to drink alcoholic beverages. Corpus Christi Police will continue strict enforcement throughout the New Year’s Holiday.

Police Arrest Hit & Run Driver on IH 37 By Following Clues

                A 21-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated and possession of synthetic marijuana Wednesday night after he caused a vehicle crash on the 13000 block of Interstate Highway 37.

A red 2009 Nissan Versa was driven by a 28-year-old woman on the entrance ramp to the 13900 block of Interstate Highway 37 at about 8:15 Wednesday night. The Versa was struck from behind by a silver 2004 Saturn Vue operated by 21-year-old Eric Baugher (12/27/1990). The Saturn then left without providing any information.

The 28-year-old woman and her 40-year-old woman passenger were treated by an ambulance crew for minor injuries. Corpus Christi Police investigated the crash and discovered the front bumper and license plate for the Saturn which left the scene.

Corpus Christi Police tracked the vehicle and arrested Baugher for driving while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine. Baugher was also arrested for possession of a substance in penalty group 2-A of the Health and Safety Code; a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.

Baugher was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and then he was delivered to the city detention center. The Nissan Versa was towed due to damage. The Saturn was taken to the city impound lot.
