A 31-year-old man caused two vehicle crashes on South Padre Island Drive Wednesday night and then was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer and his partner were approached in the parking lot of the HEB on Kostroyz at 9:50pm Wednesday night by a man who complained that a green Ford drove recklessly. The officers saw a green 2001 Ford F-150 pickup travel at a high rate of speed. The officers initiated a traffic stop; but, the pickup accelerated away from the officers to travel south on Kostroyz to the freeway.

The pickup went through several red lights until the pickup struck a maroon 2007 Chevrolet Malibu in the intersection of Kostoryz and South Padre Island Drive. The pickup drove away from the crash. Patrol officers discontinued the chase and turned their attention to the 41-year-old woman in the Malibu. The woman was not taken to the hospital for injuries and was able to drive her car away.

The pickup drove east on South Padre Island Drive to Carroll Lane where the truck struck a blue 2001 Chevy Malibu. The impact caused the truck to roll and then strike two parked cars at 3615 South Padre Island Drive. The 21-year-old man who drove the blue Malibu, his 18-year-old woman passenger, and 2-year-old boy passenger were all not injured in the crash.

The operator of the truck, 31-year-old Matthew Grier (11/25/1980) ran from the scene of the second crash but was quickly apprehended by Corpus Christi Police. Grier was arrested for evading arrest in a vehicle and for a 3rd Driving While Intoxicated charge. Corpus Christi Police are investigating a charge of Fail to stop and render aid against Grier for the crash at Kostoryz and S.P.I.D.
