Patrol Report 06/15/2015

The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to 768  calls for service and generated 209 reports for formal criminal complaints from 7:00 a.m. June 14 to 7:00 a.m. on June 15, 2015. These are samples of the criminal complaints filed by the Corpus Christi Police for that time period.

“BRAVO” District

Offense: Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle

Corpus Christi Police responded to a new car dealership, located at 6602 South Padre Island Drive, after a man was seen breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot.

Officers received a call from security officers that they were chasing a man who had broken a front driver side window on a 2015 Ford Explorer.  When officers arrived the security officers had the man in custody.  He told police he was looking to drive one of the new cars back to Austin, Texas.

Benjamin Berckenhoff (09/30/1996), was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Police located a metal pipe in his possession that they believe was used to break out the window.

Location: Padre Island Beach Access Road 3
Offense: Drowning

Two young boys visiting the beach with their family had to be rescued from the surf near Beach Access Road 3.

Corpus Christi Police responded and contacted the boy’s father who told them that before the 14 and 11 year old got into trouble, he had seen them in shallow water.  When he turned he saw that both boys had been washed out and people were screaming.

He and his brother in law ran into the surf, along with a man that was fishing nearby and another Good Samaritan that saw the rescue attempts.  Two females on shore initiated CPR on both boys and they were transported by CFD EMS to Bay Area Hospital.

When officers went to Bay Area Hospital to investigate, they were told that both had been transferred to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

The 11 year old was later pronounced dead. The 14 year old remains in PICU.  The family was visiting from San Antonio.

A female bartender contacted Corpus Christi Police after a man walked the tab on his bar bill.

The Officer who was working security at the bar was contacted by the bar tender after she saw the man walk out the door without paying for a tab that totaled $188.

The man was stopped by the Officer in the parking lot.  After an investigation it was determined that the man was intoxicated.

John Chapa (10/01/1978), was charged with theft of services and public intoxication.

Offense: Driving While Intoxicated

A Corpus Christi Police Officer observed a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction in the 1600 block of South Shoreline Boulevard.

The Officer stopped the 1996 Mercury Marquis sedan and contacted the driver and after an investigation determined that he was intoxicated.

Officers arrested the driver, Gilberto Salinas (12/06/1972), for felony driving while intoxicated.  His female passenger, Maria Cabrera (10/10/1973), was arrested for possession of marijuana when a joint was found under her seat.

Location: State Highway 286 South over Leopard Street
Offense: Injured Person

A 37 year old man jumped off the Crosstown Freeway flyover over Leopard Street as Corpus Christi Police Officers approached him.

Officers responded to the flyover bridge after a motorist saw the man sitting on the edge outside the railing.  As the officer approached and before he could exit his patrol car, the man jumped from the freeway bridge onto Leopard Street below.

He was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS.  It is thought that he only broke his right ankle after the jump.

Officers are still investigating this incident.
