Corpus Christi Police responded to a crash with injuries in the 4800 block of Ayers Street and found the driver of the car that struck a pedestrian to be intoxicated.

The crash investigation revealed that a 1999 Volvo was traveling south in the 4800 block of Ayers Street in the left lane when the driver made an unsafe lane change from a direct course. The vehicle struck a wooden utility pole and a 59 year old male pedestrian that was crossing Ayers Street. A witness told officers that as he passed the Volvo before it crashed he could see the driver leaning his head back and appeared he was falling asleep. The vehicle swerved to the left, crossing the center double yellow lines and struck the pole and the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS with serious injuries to his leg.

The driver of the Volvo, Joseph Maldonado (11/25/1993), was determined to be intoxicated. He was arrested for intoxication assault due to the serious injuries to the pedestrian’s leg.   He was additionally charged with possession of dangerous drug after a synthetic cannabinoid product was found in his car and driving with a suspended license.
