ARREST MADE FOR INTOXICATION ASSAULT

On Friday, August 2, 2024, at 10:38pm, officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Kostoryz Road in reference to a major traffic collision with injuries.

Officers arrived and located a 5-vehicle collision. Witnesses told officers that the driver of a silver Ford pickup was traveling northbound on the 5000 block of Kostoryz, disregarded two traffic control devices (ran two red lights), and struck a black passenger car that was driving westbound on S. Padre Island Drive through the intersection with a green light. The collision caused the pickup to roll and crash into two additional vehicles that were sitting at the red light, facing southbound. During the rollover, the pickup threw debris onto an additional vehicle, causing damage to that vehicle.

Medics transported the 39-year-old female driver of the black passenger car to a local hospital with serious injuries. The four occupants of the two passenger cars that were struck were also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The occupant of the fifth vehicle was uninjured.

The driver of the pickup, 40-year-old Joshua Smith, displayed signs of intoxication and was arrested for intoxication assault with a vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance. After he was medically cleared, he was transported to the City Detention Center for booking.
