Patrol Report July 16, 2014

Location: 4500 Leon Street
Offense: Criminal Trespass (PC 30.05 Class B Misdemeanor)
Case Number: 1407150071
Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to a business located in the 4400 block of Prescott St., and there contacted a 36 year old female who told them that her husband was on drugs and thought people were chasing him. The male had just left the store on foot running across Gollihar Rd. At about that same time, police were receiving a call from a resident in the 4500 block of Leon St. stating there was a male on the roof of the home. Officers arrived and began trying to talk the male into coming down off the roof. The male refused to come down and was walking around the roof yelling at the officers and people in the street. CCFD responded and they placed a ladder next to the residence so the male could use it to get down. After talking to him for almost an hour he came down off the roof and was taken into custody. Emmanuel Buckingham (01/07/1986) was found to be under the influence of a drug, and he was arrested. He was charged with criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor, for getting on the roof of someone else’s property.

Offense: Aggravated Robbery (PC29.03 First Degree Felony)
Case Number: 1407160023
Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a robbery at a business located in the 4600 block of Ayers St. A 37 year old female store clerk told officers that she was behind the register when two males walked up to the store. One of the males with half of his face covered with a black mask entered the store and pointed a handgun at the clerk. The clerk asked him “what are you doing, you guys were just here?” The suspect exited the store and fled walking towards the south side of the store. The other suspect never entered the store and followed the other suspect when he left. The clerk reported that nothing was taken or damaged, and she was not injured. The suspects had been to the store about an hour earlier for gas. The clerk mentioned that they are regular customers at the store. At this time officers do not know the names of the two suspects but they are described as both being in their mid-twenties, one is 5’2’’ to 5’4” tall, about 120 to 130 pounds with a medium skin tone, the other 5’4” to 5’5” tall about 140 pounds with a light skin tone.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer on patrol heard fireworks going off in the 3000 block of N. Shoreline Blvd. and then saw two males walking away from the area. The officer stopped both suspects and found one of them, Joey Bernal (07/21/1986) to have three outstanding felony arrest warrants out of Atascosa County, Texas. He was arrested, and the other 26 year old male was released.

Detectives Looking For Burglary Suspect

Offense: Burglary of a Building (PC 30.02 State Jail Felony)
Case Number: 1407100020

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a burglary of a business located in the 4200 block of South Alameda St.  A 41 year old male employee told officers that the window on the back door had been broken out and the suspect had reached in through the window and opened the door. Once inside the business, the suspect removed the cash drawer and placed it on the floor. He attempted to open the safe by grabbing the handle. He then took the cash drawer and ran out the back door.

Video from the business shows a light skin male, wearing dark clothing and something partially covering his face. Anyone who can identify the individual responsible, or has any additional information about this crime should call the Corpus Christi Police Property Crimes Detectives at 886-2841.

Suspect Images From Sonic Robbery Released

Corpus Christi Police responded to an armed robbery at the Sonic Drive In located in the 13900 block of Northwest Blvd. A 19 year old employee told officers he was in the back prepping food when he observed a male suspect outside point a handgun at another 16 year old female employee. He intervened and told the suspect that he would give him the money. The suspect pointed the handgun at him and both entered the business. The suspect took money from the cash register and the safe and then left toward the back of the restaurant. The suspect is described as a white male, 20 to 30 years old, 5’10” tall and about 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue long sleeve shirt, gloves, black pants and a mask. Patrol Report July 15, 2014

Location: 3000 Cedar Springs Road
Offense: Deadly Conduct (PC 22.05 Class A Misdemeanor)
Case Number: 1407140121
Corpus Christi Police responded to a home located in the 3000 block of Cedar Springs Rd. for a disturbance with a weapon. A 40 year old female victim told officers that she got into a verbal argument with her 17 year old son after she refused to give him money while they were shopping.
Once they arrived at home her son began to throw things around and damage items in the home. He also took several prescription pills and drank a bottle of cough medication. The male then grabbed a butcher knife on the kitchen counter and stabbed holes in the wall, and also punched holes in the wall. The female then tried to call police and while calling 911 the male retrieved a pistol from a locked safe inside the house, and demanded that she hang up. The female was able to complete the call but not able to speak. 911 operators could hear a female yelling on the open line and dispatched officers to the scene. The male then left out the backdoor and jump the back fence with the pistol still in his hand.
Before officers could arrive the male fled the area on foot. After almost two hours of searching, he was located several blocks away on Breedling Dr. and was taken into custody. Markus Franklin (11/25/1996) was transported to a hospital to get medically cleared and then arrested and charged with deadly conduct and interfering with an emergency call, both Class A misdemeanors.

Corpus Christi Police and Animal Control Officers responded to a home in the 1700 block of Dawn Breeze Dr. after a 68 year old man shot and killed a dog that he claims attacked him.
A 44 year old female was next door unloading groceries from her vehicle when her dog went out the front door of her home and was at large on the loose. The man said he was in his front yard when the dog attacked him and he fired one shot from a handgun once, killing the dog. Animal Control officers arrived and transported the dog to a veterinarian for a necropsyare to assist with their investigation.

Offense: Possession of Marijuana (HS 481.121 State Jail Felony)
Case Number: 1407140068
A Corpus Christi Police Officer observed a gold Nissan Pathfinder disregard a stop sign at the intersection of Brawner Parkway and Ramsey Street and pulled over the driver.
Jason Tovar (02/13/1982) was driving the vehicle and while the officer was talking to the suspect, he saw marijuana that was wrapped in a rectangular block with a clear plastic outside in the vehicle.
The driver was arrested, for possession of over 900 grams of marijuana, a state jail felony. While officers were impounding his vehicle they found five cell phones and over $900 in cash. All of that property was also seized.

Offense: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon (PC 46.04 Third Degree Felony)

A Corpus Christi Police Officer stopped a 1994 Cadillac four door for a traffic violation in the 1500 block of Stillman Ave. The driver, Sean Boston (05/10/1985), quickly got out of his car and shut the door and went back to talk to the officer. He was detained in the police unit after the officer found that he did not have a drivers license. The officer then walked up to the vehicle and observed a silver and black handgun on the drivers seat and five bags of synthetic marijuana located in the center console. Officers attempted to open the vehicle, but found that the suspect had locked the door as he was exiting, and left the keys inside. Pop-A-Lock was called and the vehicle was opened and the .40 caliber handgun and the synthetic marijuana were recovered.

Offense: Aggravated Assault (PC 22.02 Second Degree Felony)

Corpus Christi Police Officer responded to a business located in the 700 block of North Staples St. and found a 50 year old male siting outside the store with two stab wounds to the abdomen. The victim was able to give officers a good description of the male who had attacked him and of the female who was with him. The victim said he was walking in the 1200 block of Leopard St. when the suspect approached him and asked for some change and a cigarette. The victim refused, and the suspect stood in his way and did not allow him to leave the area and then began to yell at him. The suspect produced a small folding pocket knife and stabbed the victim. The victim was able to walk to the store and call the police. Officers then saw a male matching the description of the suspect walking with a female in the 1100 block of North Staples St. Steven Simpson (05/07/1959) was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony. The 46 year old female with him was released after it was determined that she was not involved in the assault. The victim was transported by CCFD EMS to the hospital to be treated for his stab wounds.

Suspect Makes Off With Shoes During Tent Sale

LOCATION: 4938 South Staples Street
OFFENSE: Theft (PC 31.03 Class B Misdemeanor)

     Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a theft of several pairs of shoes from the Dicks Sporting Goods. An employee of the store told officers that she was working the “Tent Sale” in the front parking lot of the business when a tall black male approached the shoe display and grabbed two pair of Air Max Nike shoes and a pair of Pink Nike shoes. The total value of all of the shoes was over $435.
     Another employee from the business was able to take a photo of the suspect as he got into the passenger side of a two door red Pontiac Sunfire. Images from the camera show a tall, middle aged black male with short hair wearing a white shirt. Officers went to the address of the vehicles registered owner and impounded the Pontiac; however, no suspect had been named.

Offense: Aggravated Assault (PC 22.02 Second Degree Felony)

Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to Beach Marker 203 on Padre Island for a fight. Officers contacted two males who told them that they were helping a group of people get their vehicle out of the sand because it had got stuck. The males placed both of their cell phones on the front seat of their truck. After a few minutes they went to get the phones and they were gone. One of the males then pulled a knife and the other male pulled out a hammer and they both confronted the group wanting to know who took the phones. One member of the group walked up on the blind side of the male holding the hammer and hit him on the side of the head knocking him to the ground. Other members of the group started kicking and hitting the male. By the time officers arrived, only the two males that had their phones stolen were still on the beach. The male that was assaulted was transported to the hospital by CCFD EMS for treatment.

A 52 year old female victim reported to police that she was putting gas in her car at a business located in the 4400 block of Weber Rd. when her purse was stolen. The female was standing on the passenger side of her vehicle when she noticed her driver door open up. She stated she observed a male reach in and grab her purse and then get into the passenger side of a white Dodge Durango that was parked next to hers. She ran over to the suspect vehicle but the driver put the vehicle in gear and tried to run over her. A 28 year old male witness said he pulled up and saw a male running from one vehicle and getting into another and heard the female yelling. He was able to provided officers with details about the suspect. The suspect is described as being in his late twenties or early thirties, 5’05” to 5’7” tall, about 140 to 160 pounds with brown hair and glasses. Officers are still looking for suspects involved in this case. Police want to remind people to lock the doors of their vehicles when they are getting fuel, and be aware of cars parked next to you with people sitting inside.

Offense: Driving While Intoxicated (Class B Misdemeanor)

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a call about a vehicle that had been involved in a hit and run crash and the driver was thought to be intoxicated. Officers went to a business located in the 5800 block of South Staples St. There they found a 19 year old male witness who said he saw a gray GMC truck strike a vehicle at Holly Rd. and Airline Rd. The witness told officers that the truck`s left tire came off with the impact of the crash. The driver continued going west on Holly Rd. with a missing front tire. The witness followed the vehicle into a parking lot of a business located in the 5800 block of South Staples St. and then detained the driver until officers arrived. Officers contacted Benjamin Ortiz (07-24-1987), and found him to be intoxicated. The crash scene was located in the 6200 block of Holly Rd. Officers determined that the suspect had veered over while traveling east on Holly Rd. and struck a 2000 Nissan four door car that was traveling west. Two victims in the Nissan, a 43 year old driver, and his 9 year old son were not injured. The suspect was charged with driving while intoxicated, a class B misdemeanor, and his vehicle was impounded.

Nickolas Swope (02/02/1979) ran onto the baseball diamond at Whataburger Field during a game between the Corpus Christi Hooks and the Midland Rockhounds. The game was in the bottom of the 5th inning when the Rockhounds pitcher hit a Hooks batter in the leg. The fan came running out of the stands on the third base side and ran toward the pitchers mound with his arm cocked back and his fist up. Another player came running up and pushed the suspect down. Several other players surrounded the suspect, and he was escorted off the field. Corpus Christi Police Officers working at the game found the suspect to be intoxicated and he was arrested. The suspect was also charged with threatening assault on the opposing pitcher, a Class C misdemeanor and criminal trespass for running onto the field, a Class B misdemeanor.

Offense: Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (PC 31.07 State Jail Felony)

Case Number: 1406290086
A Corpus Christi Police Officer checking the parking lot of a business located in the 3600 block of Leopard St. noticed a blue Chevrolet truck with a paper license tag that returned to another vehicle. The registration sticker on the windshield revealed the truck was reported stolen on June 29, 2014 from an address in the 1900 block of Saratoga Blvd. The officer set up on the vehicle and after several minutes, the truck pulled out onto Leopard St. Officers contacted the driver Paul Warner (10/17/1982) and a passenger Johnathan Phillips (02/06/1986) in the stolen vehicle and both were taken into custody without incident.

Location: 7200 State Highway 358 East
Offense: Driving While intoxicated (PC 49.04 Class B Misdemeanor)

Case Number: 1407100146
The victim of a hit and run crash called police after a 2007 black Mercedes Benz struck his car as both were traveling east on State Highway 358 near Rodd Field Rd. The caller told police that after the suspect struck his vehicle it continued traveling east on the freeway and he was following it. Officers caught up to the suspect and the caller  on Park Road 22 and Whitecap Blvd. There the suspect had stopped to fill up with gas. Officers contacted the driver, Juan Garcia (06/06/1976) and found him to be intoxicated. He was arrested, and his vehicle was impounded. In addition to the driving while intoxicated charge, the suspect was also found to be operating the vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

Offense: Aggravated Robbery (PC 29.03 First Degree Felony)

Case Number: 1407100065
Corpus Christi Police responded to a home in the 3100 block of Halifax Drive for a robbery with weapons. Two female victims told officers they were moving items out of the house and had left the front door open. While inside the house they saw a male suspect described as being 5`7″ tall and 120-140 pounds with tattoos covering both arms enter the house caring a crowbar. The suspect demanded the keys to the truck parked out front. The male began walking toward them and they attempted to run into one of the bedrooms but a second male entered the house and grabbed one of the females by the arm. The second male was described as being about 5`8″-5`9″ tall and 170-190 pounds wearing an orange or yellow towel over his face. He was also carrying a crowbar and a large knife. The suspects took wallets and cell phones belonging to the victims and then began to try and remove a television. While they were both working to unplug the TV one of the females ran outside yelling and screaming for help. As she was running through the yard she fell and one of the suspects jumped on top of her and attempted to cover her mouth. The victim continued to yell, and the suspect took off running. The female was able to make it to a neighbor’s home and call the police. While this was occurring the second suspect was still inside the home with the other female. He left the house with the TV and cable box and went to a white Chevrolet Malibu four door car that was parked nearby. Inside the vehicle was a female in the drivers seat. A 45 year old male witness then got involved, and he approached the male with the TV. The suspect put the TV down and began swinging the crowbar at the witness. The suspect then picked up the TV and ran to the corner of Halifax St. and Calgary St. and hid in some bushes. A short time later the female driving the white vehicle pulled up and called the male out of the bushes. The male threw the TV in the back seat and got into vehicle. The second suspect then appeared from hiding and he jumped on the trunk of the vehicle and they drove away.

Offense: Driving While Intoxicated (PC 49.04 Class B Misdemeanor)

Corpus Christi Police responded to a crash at the intersection of Weber Rd. and Holly Rd. The crash investigation showed that a 2001 Hyundai Sonata four door operated by a 21 year old female and occupied by a 9 month old child was stopped at the red light facing south on Weber Rd. when the vehicle they were in was struck from behind by a 2004 Lexus SUV driven by Amanda Moya (08/15/1985). Upon investigation, Ms. Moya was found to be intoxicated and arrested, for driving while intoxicated, a Class B misdemeanor and her vehicle was impounded. The driver and infant in the car that was struck from behind were both transported by CCFD EMS to the hospital for treatment.

Offense: Driving While Intoxicated (PC 49.04 Class B Misdemeanor)

Case Number: 1407100154
Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a call involving a vehicle that had crashed into a fence, storage shed, another fence and had come to rest in the backyard of a home in the 4200 block of Snowbird St.  Witnesses saw the driver abandon the vehicle and then take off running. Officers on the scene were familiar with the vehicle and knew who usually drove it. They went to another address in the 4200 block of Snowbird St. to see if the suspect had run home. While outside the home, officers observed Juan Sanchez (05/01/1992) hiding behind a vehicle parked in the driveway. He was also found to have outstanding warrants for his arrest and they took him into custody. The crash investigation revealed that the suspect vehicle was traveling west on Cedar Pass Dr. at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control and struck the two wooden fences, and a shed. Officers also determined that the suspect was intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries he received as a result of being involved in the crash, and to provide a specimen of blood. When officers arrived at the City Detention Center the suspect attempted to escape from custody. While officers were having him exit the patrol car the suspect managed to slip his left arm from the handcuff making both hands free. He pushed off as he exited the car and ran toward Upper Broadway St. Officers gave chase and caught up to the suspect and attempted to place his hands behind his back to be handcuffed.   He kept his hands in front of his body even after being ordered numerous times to place his hands behind his back. The suspect refused officers commands and he attempted to get up with officers holding him down. After a brief struggle the suspect was handcuffed and escorted back to the jail. He was additionally charged with escape from custody and resisting arrest, both a Class A misdemeanors.

Traffic Officers Investigating Fatal Crash

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a single vehicle crash in the 3800 block of Airline Road. A man who lives in the area, told officers that he heard a crash between 4:30 and 5:00 this morning. When he was leaving for work at about 7:45 AM he observed a black  truck in the ditch and called police. Corpus Christi Police Traffic Investigators responded and the crash investigation revealed that a 27 year old male, was driving a 2000 Dodge truck south on Airline Rd. and failed to negotiate the turn toward Rodd Field Rd. The truck traveled straight through the closed section of Airline Rd. The truck then struck a plastic construction barricade and then skid into the ditch and rolled over ejecting the driver. There were no other vehicles involved and no sign of any other occupants.

Looking For Theft Suspect

DATE: July 3 through July 5, 2014
TIME: 6:30 PM
LOCATION: 1015 Santa Fe Street
OFFENSE: Theft (PC 31.03 Class C Misdemeanor)

Corpus Christi Police took a report for a theft of property from the Nurses on Wheels business located at 1015 Santa Fe St. The theft occurred sometime between July 3 and July 5. The suspect’s images were captured by security cameras on the property and they show a male with a black cap, black t-shirt, and a black back pack riding a bicycle. Patrol Report July 10, 2014

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a fight call at a residence located in the 100 block of Green Branch Dr. They arrived and found a 22 year old male victim outside in the roadway with injuries to his head. He said that he and his father Jerry Lee Alvarez (02/08/1973) got into an argument over a cell phone. The father pulled out a wooden bat and started hitting his son with it. The victim didn’t appear seriously injured but he was transported to the hospital by CCFD EMS. The suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, a first degree felony.

A fourteen year old female went to hide in her bedroom closet and called police reporting a burglar in her home after she heard the front door of her home being forced open. Officers arrived and heard screaming coming from inside and made entry and found the young female trying to get away from the suspect. Dillon Holdsworth (09/15/1995) was taken into custody and charged with burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony, and he also had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

A male suspect was observed by a home owner removing a weed eater from his garage. The home owner was inside his home when he observed a male suspect walking down his driveway with the property. The home owner yelled at the suspect to stop, however he took off running. The home owner gave chase, and was able to catch the suspect and tackle him. While he was trying to hold the suspect down, two other males pulled up in a 2010 Dodge sedan and they began to assault the home owner in an attempt to free their friend. After being hit, the home owner released the suspect, and all three got into the vehicle and left the scene. Officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle parked at a home in the 700 block of Ashland Dr. All three suspects, Juantez Craig (08/25/1993), who had originally stolen the property, Michael Hein (02/04/1993), the driver of the suspect vehicle and Marcus Guerrero (01/30/1991) were all taken into custody and charged with robbery, a second degree felony.

Corpus Christi Police Officers responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle parked at Yeager Elementary School found a wanted person, and drugs. The reporting party called and said that they had seen the white Toyota Camry four door parked there several times over the past few days. Officers arrived and contacted the person sitting in the driver’s seat, Jacob Moir (01/21/1996) and when he stepped out of the vehicle there was a prescription pill bottle with the label scratched off in the driver door pocket. He was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, a state jail felony. The front seat passenger, Marina Montemayor (09/01/1996) was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant and she was taken into custody.
