Proper Collection of evidence by a patrol officer leads to solving a robbery

Occurred May 11th 2011 08:24  5401 Leopard Street Robbery  1105110030

Rene Manzano

Corpus Christi Police have identified a suspect involved in the robbery of Pockets Sports Bar last year.  A male suspect who was wearing a ski mask had demanded all the money from the cash registers, but there was none as the business was not yet open for the day.  The bar employee called 911 and the suspect fled.

Senior Officer Charlie Williams responded and a canvas of the area revealed the suspect’s shirt and ski mask near by. That evidence was carefully collected and submitted for DNA analysis.

In February of this year, CCPD detective Sergio Delgado was notified by DPS that the DNA from the items matched suspect Rene Manzano 07-09-66. At that time Detective Delgado attempted to contact Rene Manzano to obtain a sample of his DNA for confirmation. Rene Manzano could not be located. As he is a registered sex offender, Rene Manzano is required to register his current address with local law enforcement. Detective Delgado drafted a warrant for the arrest of Rene Manzano for Failure to Comply with Sexual registration and he was located by the U.S. Marshal task force.

Once in custody a sample of Rene Manzano’s DNA was taken and it was a positive match for the discarded mask and shirt from the robbery. Detective Delagado will be presenting the robbery case to the Nueces County District Attorney.

Over 750 students and 400 adults interacted with police officers, physicians, and the City’s Park and Recreation team, to name a few, and learned  about burglary prevention, anti-bullying tactics, nutrition, and more while receiving free physicals, vision screening, and school supplies.

The exemplary performance of these officers reflects favorable on the Department and the City of Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi Police Lieutenant Phillip Bintliff was awarded his third life saving award Wednesday from Chief Simpson.

Lieutenant Bintliff is a police patrol supervisor and while on patrol last Sunday, July 29, Lieutenant Phillip Bintiff heard a call dispatched for a 7 month old baby who was unconscious. Lt. Bintliff responded to the residence and found the family trying desperately to give air to their baby. The baby boy has a tracheotomy and was not breathing and unresponsive.

According to the parents, Lt. Bintliff took charge. He directed each of them to a task while he started infant compressions. Lt. Bintliff told the father to go outside and flag down the ambulance. Lt. Bintliff directed the home nurse to clear the baby’s airway and then told the mother to operate the heart monitor.

The baby’s pulse monitor indicated no pulse. Lt. Bintliff said he refused to give up and performed chest compressions on the baby. About 2 minutes later the baby resuscitated and began to cry. Baby O was taken to the hospital for observation and returned home a happy baby boy with parents thankful to Lt. Bintliff.

Lieutenant Bintliff is known throughout the police department for his humble manner. Lieutenant Bintliff is a 42-year-old father of four daughters and has been employed with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 12 years as a graduate of the 59th Police Academy class.

Lt. Bintliff shared the credit for his action and said this department is full of good quality employees.
