Easter Celebration Turns Violent As Shots Fired in Neighborhood Park

An Easter gathering at Los Encinos Park was cut short when it turned violent for guests.  Officers rushed to the park when 911 calls for service were requested for multiple shots fired with one person being run over by a red pick-up truck.

Upon their arrival, Officers contacted several victims and witnesses who reported a confrontation had occurred between the victims and the 29-year-old brother of Andrew Flores (11/05/84) which escalated into a heated disagreement. 

During the argument, Flores’ brother displayed a firearm and fired several rounds into the ground.  Witnesses told Officers, Flores who was driving a red 1996 Ford F-250 pick-up truck drove towards his brother and ran over him. 

Flores stopped, helped his brother from underneath the truck and into his truck before driving off.  While still in the park, police were told the shooter was pulled from the vehicle and pistol whipped.

Flores again pulls his brother into his truck and drives off yet again.  They two were observed by Officers fleeing from the park and attempted to pull them over in the 1700 block of Frio Street.  Flores refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued.  It ended when Flores was pulled over in the 2100 block of Carolyn. 

Flores was arrested and charged with Evading Arrest in a Vehicle.  His brother was transported to Spohn Memorial with a laceration to the head. 

The aggravated assault remains an active investigation which has been taken over by the Criminal Investigation Division.

Man Rescued From Burning Vehicle

Two men were arrested Friday morning after they were rescued from a single vehicle crash while that vehicle was on fire at Leopard Street and McBride Lane.

Corpus Christi Police Lieutenant Tim Brown observed a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Leopard and McBride at 12:30am. The maroon 2002 Ford F-150  truck rolled in the crash and trapped the two occupants inside the vehicle. Police patrol officers Billy Whitehead and Raymond Harrison arrived and saw smoke and flames coming from the truck. The officers broke the back window of the truck and extracted both the 24-year-old passenger and the 27-year-old driver out of the truck.  According to officers at the scene, both men were dazed from the crash and unable to free themselves from the burning vehicle.  The passenger was still strapped into his seatbelt when officers pulled him from the wreck.

CCFD medics responded to the scene and examined both men, but neither had any significant injury.

The driver of the truck, Anthony Allen Flores (DOB: 2/4/1985) appeared intoxicated and was administered field sobriety tests.  Flores was subsequently arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital for evaluation and treatment.  Flores refused to submit to a voluntary blood draw, so officers obtained a search warrant and obtained a blood sample. Flores was then booked at the City Detention Center.  DWI is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine for the first offense.

His passenger, Huel J Robertson (DOB: 4-12-1987), was arrested for a public intoxication and an outstanding Nueces County DWI warrant (2nd offense).  He, too, was booked at the CDC.

Help Identify This Graffiti Vandal

Corpus Christi Police are seeking additional information from the public to identify those responsible for graffiti and criminal mischief done to the Stripes at 3238 Buddy Lawrence Dr. last January.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer went to the Stripes store on January 8 and noticed a security camera was damaged. The officer learned from the store employee that the damage was new and there was new graffiti on the walls of the store.

The value of the damage to the camera is an estimated $2,000. The criminal mischief charge is a State Jail Felony which, if convicted, the person responsible faces up to 2 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.  The graffiti charge is a Class B misdemeanor which is punishable with up to 6 months in jail and up to a $2,000 fine.

39 Year Old Arrested For Murder

Corpus Christi Police Homicide Detectives supported by the United States Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force arrested 39-year-old Xavier Harvey Salinas (5/3/1972) for a warrant for arrest for the murder of Nathaniel Vargas.

Corpus Christi Police investigated the death of Nathaniel Vargas on the 700 block of Omaha Drive on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at about 8am. The investigators with the assistance of the Corpus Christi Police Gang unit evaluated evidence and identified Xavier Salinas as the person responsible for the crime.

Salinas was arrested at his place of employment at the 300 block of Westchester at 8:53am. Corpus Christi Police continue to investigate additional information about this case.

The Corpus Christi Police would like to thank the members of the community who assisted with the collection of information to resolve this investigation.

$8,000 In Copper Taken From A Business

Over $8,000 worth of copper was stolen from a business overnight and Corpus Christi Police would like help from the community to apprehend the persons responsible.

Police were called to 8421 Up River Road for theft of copper. The manager of the business told police that the air conditioner units for several portable offices were damaged and the copper was removed. The manager of the business said the theft took place over the weekend between Friday at 6pm and Monday at 8am.

12 Apprehended After Suburban Evades From Police

Twelve individuals were apprehended by Corpus Christi Police after a vehicle chase that started on Interstate Highway 37 Sunday night.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer saw a white 1996 Chevy Suburban travel north on the 3900 block of Interstate Highway 37 and change lanes without the use of a turn signal. The officer then saw the suburban travel in the center of the roadway and straddle the center stripes which did not allow other vehicles to pass. Once closer to the vehicle, the officer also observed a safety violation which prompted the officer to initiate a traffic stop.

The suburban fled from the officer and other officers successfully employed a tire deflation system to cause the suburban to stop. Twelve individuals ran from the suburban. All twelve of the individuals were captured by law enforcement.

Eleven of the individuals from the suburban were transferred to the custody of U.S. Border Patrol. The 44-year-old driver of the suburban, Paul Benavides (9/14/1967) was taken to the city detention center by the Corpus Christi Police for evading in a vehicle.

Morning Homicide on Omaha Drive

Corpus Christi Police were called to the 700 block of Omaha Drive at 8:00am Thursday morning in reference to a shooting.

Police Officers found a man who had an injury consistent with a gunshot wound. The man believed to be an age of early twenties was immediately taken by ambulance to the Spohn Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police closed off the street to traffic to search for clues about this event. Police are searching for an older model white vehicle that may be related to this event.

The victim of this crime expired at the hospital as a result of the injuries. Homicide detectives are investigating leads and request any information from the public in relation to this crime.

Driver Cited for Speeding in Early Morning Accident

A gold 2004 Ford Taurus traveling eastbound on HWY 44 was struck from behind by a white 1997 TXDOT Volvo truck.  The Taurus spun out of control, drove across the grass medium, struck a lamp pole and came to a stop in the westbound lane of HWY 44. 

The 53-year-old male in the Taurus received minor injuries and taken to Bay Area by CCFD Emergency Personnel. 

Rene Longoria, 46, also sustained minor injuries, but refused to be taken to the hospital.  He was cited for Failure to Control Speed/Unsafe/Inappropriate Speed.

Child Misbehaves and The Mother Gets Struck By A Car

A 48-year-old woman told police she was intentionally struck by a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old woman Monday after a confrontation about their children’s misbehavior in school.

The 48-year-old mother said her child got in trouble at school and the mother went to confront the 31-year-old woman about the matter. The 48-year-old mother did not provide police with details about the event but said she was struck by a gray or blue sedan that was driven by the person she confronted. The 31-year-old woman in the car left the area before police arrived.

An ambulance provided emergency medical treatment to the 48-year-old woman and considered the injuries to be minor and did not require transport to the hospital.

A witness provided police with more details. The 31-year-old woman was not yet contacted by police and the investigation continues. The woman struck by the car said she will not confront others again without police presence.

One Person Arrested After Fight Over A Beer Leaves 27-Year-Old Hospitalized

Officers responded to the Cabaret Men’s Club for a fight inside involving a couple of subjects.  Upon their arrival they found the victim covered in blood from bloody nose and facial injuries.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel for medical treatment.

Further investigation revealed, the victim and Ralph Villarreal (01/17/72) argument over a beer escalated into a fight when Villarreal shoved the victim to the floor and began assaulting him with a beer bottle.  Villarreal continued the assault by kicking the victim in the head.

Villarreal was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and an outstanding Municipal Court warrant.
