A 44 year old man called Corpus Christi Police after his car rolled into the Nueces River at Labonte Park. The man said he was attempting to turn around at the boat ramp and had stopped at the edge near the water. As he tried to back up, his white 2013 Dodge Challenger sedan began to slide into the river. The man was able to get out of the car and watched as it sank into the murky water about 30 feet from the shore.  The Corpus Christi Police Dive team is expected to try and recover the car on Thursday morning.

Truck Crashes Into Batting Cage On Tiger Lane

The Corpus Christi Police responded to a vehicle crash with a fatal injuries on the 3600 block of Tiger Lane Wednesday afternoon. Corpus Christi Police responded to a vehicle crash at 4:42pm and discovered a black 2006 Ford F-150 in the batting cage on the grounds of Carroll High School. The Corpus Christi Fire Department Emergency Medical Services attempted to provide aid to a man in the truck, but determined the man died. The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section responded to process the scene.

Officers learned that the black truck collided with a parked, unoccupied vehicle on the 3600 block of Tiger Lane. The Officers believe the truck travelled west on Tiger Lane after striking the parked car and the truck struck a Nissan Rogue which was stopped at the intersection of Tiger Lane and Carroll Lane. The Officers believe the Ford truck then reversed at a high rate of speed from the intersection and into the batting cage near the intersection.

Officers learned that there were no injuries except the man who drove the Ford truck. The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section documented the scene and gathered information from witnesses and collected evidence. The Officers had the 3600 block of Tiger Lane closed to vehicle traffic from about 4:30pm until after 7:30pm.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office collected the man from the truck and will conduct an evaluation to determine the cause of death. Investigators are in the initial stages of the investigation and urge anyone with any information about this crash to contact the Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section at 886-2600.

Corpus Christi Police received a call about a man down in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at 2240 N. Padre Island Dr. When officers arrived they saw a man get up from the ground and get on a motorcycle and drive off. Officers attempted to stop the rider and after a short distance he dismounted the motorcycle. When officers approached him he took off running on foot.  After a short foot pursuit officers were able to catch up to the suspect and take him into custody. When officers asked him why he was running, he said he thought he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.  Officers checked, but did not find the suspect was wanted.  Albert Soto (12/07/1965) was arrested for evading officers on foot, a Class A Misdemeanor.

Corpus Christi Police responded to an alarm at a business located at 2833 S Padre Island Dr. and found the front glass door had been broken. Officers entered and found the cabinet behind the desk in the front of the business had been opened and some property was taken. Witnesses told officers they saw a male with a long jacket and a hat running from the business toward Kostoryz Rd. after the alarm went off.  The owner estimated cost to replace the front door would be $600 and he estimated about $200 in cash was stolen.

Offense: Assault of a Peace Officer        (PC   22.01    Third Degree Felony)

A Corpus Christi Police Officer on patrol was pulling into the Police Department parking lot located at 321 John Sartain St. when he observed a male suspect inside of a parked 2005 silver Mercedes-Benz with the driver side door open. As the officer went to investigate he saw the male getting out of the driver’s seat and the officer attempted to stop him.  The suspect fled on foot across the street and when the officer caught up to the suspect, he assaulted the officer. Both fell to the ground and the suspect grabbed the officers shoulder microphone and pulled it off of his uniform shirt. The suspect then reached up and scratched the officer across the forehead and caused other scratches to his elbow and arm before finally being taken into custody. Alexander Toynes (09/15/1986) was arrested and charged with assaulting the officer, a third degree felony and additionally charged with evading arrest on foot and burglary, both Class A misdemeanors.

Offense: Hit and Run Investigation

Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to the 7100 block of Southhaven Dr. for a hit and run crash with an AEP Power pole. Officers found a wooden electrical pole on the north side of the road had been broken off a few feet above the ground.  The remaining pole was standing upright in the street being held up by some wires.  Several other wires had snapped and were on the sidewalk.  A witness told officers she saw a white truck with a short bed in the roadway shortly after she heard the crash, and then saw the truck leaving the scene on Rodd Field Road. Officers determined that a vehicle traveling east on Southhaven Dr. jumped the north curb, and struck the wooden electrical pole and then fled the scene.  Damage to the pole was estimated to be about $3,500.  Corpus Christi Police Hit and Run Investigators will be looking into this case to see if they can identify a vehicle and driver involved.

Female Walks Out With Stolen Shoes

The manager from the Bealls Department Store located at 5488 South Padre Island Drive called Corpus Christi Police to report that over $250 worth of shoes were stolen. The suspect female went to the shoe department in the store and began cutting security tags off shoes and then concealed the shoes in hand bags.  Security camera images show a hispanic female, 30 to 40 years of age with dark medium length hair walking out of the store without paying. Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to the parking lot of a business located at 6773 S Padre Island Dr. when a witness called to report he was watching a man break into his friends’ car. When officers arrived they were directed by the witness to the front of the hotel parking lot to a white Ford Escape car and they saw a male sitting in the driver’s seat. Officers found Andrew Parker (06/27/1993) removing property including a black 9 MM caliber handgun from the car.  The suspect was arrested and charged with burglary of a vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor, and the stolen items were returned to the victim.

Car Burglar Swipes Purse

A 28 year old female called Corpus Christi Police to report that her 2004 GMC Envoy SUV had been broken into while it was parked in front of a business located at 4440 S. Padre Island Dr. Camera images show a male suspect walk around the building and break the passenger side door window.  The suspect then reaches in and takes the victims purse.  The suspect was then picked up by a dark colored passenger car, unknown make or model. Corpus Christi Police went to a business located at 10361 S. Padre Island Dr. and picked up two fake $20 bills that were used to make purchases over the past few days. The store manager reported that one of the bills was passed during the day on Friday, the other on Monday.  Officers confiscated the counterfeit bills and are reviewing video from the store to see if any suspects can be identified.

Masked Burglar Gets Nothing For His Troubles

OFFENSE: Burglary of a Building    (PC 30.02        State Jail Felony)

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a burglary of a building located at 5422 Ayers Street, Arnold Oil Company. The owner of the business stated that between 09/16/2014 sometime after 5:00 p.m. and 09/17/2014 before 8:00 a.m., an unknown male suspect smashed out the side glass door to the business and went inside. Once inside the suspect jumped over the counter and then pried open two cash registers but no money was in the registers.  The suspect then left the business. Surveillance cameras from the business show a male wearing a mask, a cap and gloves. He appears to be 5’8” to 6’00” tall and between180 and 200 pounds. While no property was taken, there was about $400 in damage done to the door of the business.  Anyone who can identify the individual responsible, or has any additional information about this crime should call the Corpus Christi Police Property Crimes Detectives at 886-2840. A 48 year old male victim called Corpus Christi Police after he was hit in the face with a pipe or bat while walking in the 4100 block of Violet Rd. The victim told officers he was walking south on Violet Rd on the sidewalk toward his house. He said that as he passed a trailer park he noticed a young black male wearing shorts and a baseball cap walking up to him.  The suspect told the victim “Don`t walk up on me” and then hit him in the head with an unknown solid weapon.  The victim could not tell what he was hit with. The victim suffered a cut above the right eye and was transported to Northwest Regional Hospital by CCFD EMS.  No suspect has been arrested in this case.
