30 Year Old Man Arrested For Shooting At IHOP

               Two men suffered by gunshot wounds Thursday morning at the parking lot of the IHOP located at 5202 South Padre Island Drive.

A 32-year-old man and a 21-year-old man arrived in the parking lot of the IHOP at about 2:25am on Thursday morning when two vehicles stopped behind their parked vehicle. A man said something to the 32-year-old man then presented a pistol and discharged the firearm.

The 32-year-old man and the 21-year-old man were both injured by the gunfire and were taken to the hospital by ambulance. One of the victims told Corpus Christi Police who was responsible for the attack. Corpus Christi Police went to a suspect’s house on the 900 block of Shiels and located the suspect.

Corpus Christi Police brought several people in for questioning in relation to this aggravated assault and do not currently have any other suspect at large. 30-year-old Juan Duenes (11/14/1981) was arrested for this aggravated assault which is a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Investigators said they believe the assault is gang related.

Both the 32-year-old man and the 21-year-old man are expected to recover from their injuries.

Babysitter Thwarts Auto Burglary

Police were called to the Montego Bay Apartments for a burglary in progress in which the babysitter observed a man burglarizing the victim’s green Mazda Protege.  The victim rushed out and confronted the auto burglar who ran towards the Paradise Bay Apartments.

Officers searching through the Paradise Bay apartment complex found Arturo Navarro (01/18/88) who was arrested when he was positively identified by the victim.  Navarro was charged with Burglary of a Vehicle, a Class “A” Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Man Charged with 4th D.W.I.

Gilbert Ray Paree

Police pulled over a black Chevrolet Corvette who failed to stop for a red light and almost struck another vehicle head on.  The driver Gilbert Ray Paree (04/19/66) was contacted and appeared to be intoxicated.  He was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests along with a Mandatory Blood Draw when it was discovered he had three prior convictions for DWI.

Paree was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More, a 3rd degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Corpus Christi Man Given 15-Year Sentence in Drive By


Antonio Maldonado

Antonio Maldonado (07/12/84)28 of Corpus Christi has been handed a 15-year sentence for his conviction of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

On September 25, 2012, a U.S. District Judge sentenced Maldonado to a total of 180 months in federal prison to be followed by a five-year-term of supervised release.

The sentencing stemmed from a drive by shooting on November 29, 2011 in which Police were called to the 4600 block of Lansdown for several gunshots.  When they arrived they contacted a witness who gave officers a description of both the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle.  The  witness also informed Officers the shooter was wearing surgical gloves.

Patrol Officers located the Silver Chevy Impala that was driven by Maldonado in the 4700 block of Holmes. Inside the Impala they located several spent shell casings, surgical gloves and along with a .40 caliber pistol.  He was also found to have several pills in his possession.  (1111290019)

The Police Department’s Gang Unit Drive By Response Team was called to assist and Maldonado was arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Possession of Dangerous Drugs.  Further investigation revealed Maldonado was involved in an earlier drive by.  (1111290017)

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked in conjunction with the Police Department and filed federal charges on Maldonado.

DWI Driver Runs Into Gate

Police were called to the Camden Breakers Apartment for a possible drunk driver who struck the complex’s entry gate. Witnesses advised Daniel Rivers (04/05/79) drove his black Suzuki into the gate, knocking it off the track.

Officers pulled over the Suzuki when it returned to the complex.  Officers found an open cold beer in the center console and Rivers appeared intoxicated.  He was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a Blood Draw taken.  Rivers was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated with an Open Alcohol Container.

Police Search for Wanted Man

Police were called to 711 Collins for a suspicious man behind the resident’s apartment.  Upon the Officer’s arrival, he found a man who was cooling down after an argument with his girlfriend.  The man identified himself as Marcus Cagle and the Officer asked him to wait in police car as he conducted his investigation.

The man resisted refusing to place his feet in the police car.  He grabbed the Officer in a bear hug and the two men fell to ground.  A struggle ensued and the man was able to escape the Officer’s hold and took off running.  The Officer deployed his Taser striking him on leg, but the suspect removed one of the darts and a foot pursuit ensued.  The man was able to jump a fence and flee into the Buccaneer Apartments.

Officers searched for the man, but were unsuccessful in locating him.  Marcus Cagle (03/28/89) was found to be wanted for Probation Violation for Fraud-Illegal Use of Credit Cards and Motion to Revoke Probation for Possession of Marijuana. Both warrants had “No Bond” set.

The backpack contained the man’s identification along with several Hydrocodone pills. Cagle also faces charges of  Possession of Dangerous Drugs, Evading Arrest, and  Failure to Identify as a Fugitive from Justice.  Cagle had originally  misidentified himself to the Officer.

Local Adult Probation Office Vandalized

Police contacted a Nueces County Adult Probation Office Supervisor who reported the wires to the security cameras were cut sometime over the weekend.  There is no suspect description available at this time.

“Taking a Bite Out of Crime”

Officers were dispatched to a theft call in which a male wearing a red hat along with a female carrying a backpack were involved.  A witness told Officers the man in the red hat jumped the fence and stole several containers and put them in a grocery cart.  The man and woman were last seen pushing the cart on westbound Agnes Street towards.

Officers found the couple at Agnes and 18th Streets and found the man to be intoxicated and the woman to be wanted.  Jean Michelle Zapata (07/11/73) and Teodoro Rosas (08/13/59) were both arrested and returned to the location where the theft occurred.  While conducting their investigation, it was discovered that Rosas had Crack Cocaine inside his mouth.  Rosas was asked to open his mouth, but he tried to swallow the drugs. One of the Officers tried to remove the drugs from his mouth, but was bitten instead.   Police were unable to retrieve the Crack Cocaine.  Rosas was medically cleared before booked at the City Detention Center.

Zapata was charged with an outstanding Nueces County warrant for Failure to Appear with No Bond set, while Rosas was charged with Public Intoxication and Assault~Bodily Injury-Public Servant.  There was a couple of items found on the suspects, but it is unknown at this time if they were stolen.

Police Find Children Driving A Car After Midnight Monday Morning

                A 14-year-old girl was caught by Corpus Christi Police as she drove a car at midnight with a 12-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl as passengers on the 5300 block of Richter Street.

Several Corpus Christi Police Officers set up a driver’s license checkpoint at the intersection of Sacky and Richter. The patrol officers stopped 14 vehicles in the one hour of the checkpoint operation. One of the vehicles that were stopped had no one older than 14 years old in the vehicle.

Ten minutes after midnight, Corpus Christi Police Officer Paulo Hernandez stopped at tan 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser at the checkpoint to contact the operator of the vehicle and insure that operator had a valid driver’s license. The vehicle was operated by a 14-year-old girl with no driver license and Officer Hernandez noticed a smell of burnt marijuana from inside the vehicle.

The front passenger was a 12-year-old boy who had marijuana in his pocket and was a reported runaway. The other passenger was the 8-year-old sister to the 14-year-old driver.

The 12-year-old boy was taken to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center for possession of marijuana and issued a citation for violation of night-time curfew. The 14-year-old girl and the 8-year-old girl were taken home to their mother and issued a citation for violation of night-time curfew. The girls said they waited for their mother to fall asleep, and then they took the car without the mother’s knowledge. The vehicle was delivered to the city impound lot by a tow truck.

Couple Injured in Drive By

Police were dispatched to the Brawner Park Apartments for a drive by shooting.  Upon their arrival, Officers talked to the 24-year-old victim who told them they attended a party in which a fist fight occurred between several males.  They fight broke up and some of the males fled.

One of the men returned in a silver four-door vehicle and shot at the victim striking him in the foot.  The man’s 21-year-old wife who was standing next to him was also struck.  It is unknown at this time if she was struck by the same bullet or debris from the bullet.

The couple was taken to Doctor’s Regional for treatment.  Their wounds are believed to be not life threatening.  The drive by team was called to assist and they met with the couple who were able to provide a description of the suspect.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 20 to 25 years of age, 5’8 to 5’9 feet tall and weighing 235 to 145.  The shooter fled in a silver four-door vehicle.
