After serving the citizens of Corpus Christi for eleven years, Chief Rocha is retiring.

Chief Rocha will begin his retirement in January of 2023. The City of Corpus Christi has benefited greatly from Chief Rocha’s professionalism and dedicated service to our community.

Detectives need your help identifying a suspect believed to be involved in a forgery and fraud case.

On October 10, 2022 officers were contacted by a victim who advised that someone was passing forged checks with his account number. The victim provided a list of the locations and times the checks were passed. Detectives investigated and were able to obtain video of the suspect at several different locations.

At approximately 7:20 pm on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of US HWY 181 South for a major crash.

Upon arrival, officers located 3 vehicles, with a total of 4 injured parties. The occupants of the vehicles were all extracted from their respective vehicles with help from the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

A 37-year-old female driver and a 27-year-old male passenger of one vehicle were pronounced deceased on scene.

A 39-year-old female driver of a separate vehicle sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The at-fault driver was transported to a local hospital and was admitted for injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators were able to determine that the at-fault driver was possibly under the influence of an intoxicating substance and was traveling north in the southbound lanes on US HWY 181. A blood specimen was collected from the driver, which will be sent off to a Crime Lab for processing.

Investigators secured 3 warrants for the Offender: Intoxication Manslaughter ($250,000 Bond), Intoxication Manslaughter ($250,000 Bond), and Intoxication Assault ($150,000 Bond).

The driver, identified as a 35-year-old Roxanne Palacios, was released from the hospital and transported to the City Detention Center for processing, at approximately 4:15 pm on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

At approximately 2:08 am on November 13, 2022, officers responded to an emergency backup call for two officers working in an off duty capacity at a bar located on the 5800 block of S Staples.

Investigation of the incident found that one of the off duty officers had been assaulted, during which time the officer was forced to discharge his weapon, striking one adult male.

Officers administered medical assistance to the offender on scene until medics arrived.

Both offender and officer were transported to local hospitals, with non-life-threatening injuries.

The offender is expected to be charged with one count of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.

This is an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Corpus Christi Police Criminal Investigation Division. Several witnesses are being interviewed at this time. 

Two Corpus Christi Police Officers will be placed on paid administrative leave at this time in accordance with department practice and policy.

At approximately 1:31 pm, on Friday, November 4, 2022, a report of an active shooter was called in for the campus of Miller High School.
 
The entire campus was cleared by police personnel. We can confirm that there is no threat to the school and there are no injuries.  We can also confirm that this call was a hoax, the source of the call is currently being investigated.  
 
The safety and security of our citizens is our highest priority, and we take all threats made toward our campuses, students, and staff seriously.    
 
Students are safe and will be released per CCISD protocol.

The Corpus Christi Police Department has been made aware of a social media post about vehicles being shot in the area of Flour Bluff Dr. and are actively investigating these incidents.

The first incident occurred on October 31 and was reported at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers investigated and discovered that a vehicle had been shot. The victim had stated that a vehicle passed him in the area of 2600 Flour Bluff Dr. and he heard a gunshot. The victim told officers that his vehicle was struck by a bullet. No one was injured and spent casings were found at the scene.

The second incident occurred on November 1 at approximately 8:00 p.m. officers responded to 10300 SPID in reference to a possible shooting. Officers arrived and contacted the victim. He advised that he was driving in the area of 1300 Glenoak turning onto 2600 Flour Bluff Dr. when he heard his right rear window shatter. No one was injured and officers searched the area but were unable to locate anything. The victim called and advised officers that he was cleaning his vehicle and located a ball bearing type projectile.

On November 2, 2004, retired Arlington Police Officer Winston Lawrence Breeding came to the aid of one of our officers attempting to apprehend a bank robber.

During the apprehension the offender discharged a weapon mortally wounding Winston Breeding.

On the 18^th anniversary of his passing the Corpus Christi Police Department remembers Winston Breeding’s sacrifice and offer our condolences to the Breeding family. May he rest in peace.

At approximately 6:50 am on Monday, October 31, 2022, officers were dispatched to the 5800 block of Williams for an unknown man down.

Upon arrival, officers located a 46-year-old deceased male. It was determined that the male died from injuries sustained from a gunshot wound. Through their investigation, Homicide Detectives followed up on several leads and were able to identify a possible suspect. The male identified as 31-year-old Roman Vargas had three outstanding warrants for: Federal Probation Violation (No Bond), Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm by Felon ($25,000 Bond) and Possession of Controlled Substance PG-1 ($1,000 Bond).

At approximately 3:45 pm on Monday, October 31, 2022, Officers with the US Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, along with Officers assigned to our Gang Unit and Patrol Division located and took Vargas into custody on the 5100 block of I-37, without incident.

Vargas was transported to the main police station to be interviewed. Homicide Detectives were able to secure an additional warrant for Vargas for Murder with a $1,000,000 Bond.

Vargas was later transported to the City Detention Center for processing.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening. Here are a few tips that hopefully will make your night a little safer.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Have a designated meeting place in case your group gets separated.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and for others to see you. Wear reflective clothing while walking in dark areas.

If you are driving through a neighborhood, drive slowly and watch for kids. Sometimes they get distracted and might cross the road without looking.

Always WALK, do not run from house to house. Look both ways before crossing the street and use crosswalks when possible.

Walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

Only enter a home if you know the residents and are with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Do not stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.

If you see a house with the lights out and no Halloween decorations, chances are they may not participate in Halloween activities. Please respect their homes and wishes.
