Parking Complaint Leads to Wanted Subject

Officers called to 2320 Baldwin Court for a vehicle parked in the handicap zone found a vehicle blocking the fire lane instead.

The driver Juan Luna Jr. (05/21/79) was found to have an outstanding warrant and arrested.  He was charged with an outstanding Nueces County warrant #CR1102903G issued on 07/17/2012 for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Friendly Neighborhood Baseball Game Turns Violent

Officers R. Montejano and E. Cano responded to a fight at 1403 N Alameda involving the parents of a group of children playing baseball.  Upon their arrival the 38-year-old victim told Officers he was watching his wife play baseball with their kids when a man confronted him and accused him of trying to hit his son with a bat. 

The victim’s 33-year-old wife, who was at bat, walked over and intervened, stepping in between the two males, but the 25-year-old suspect still managed to punch the victim in the head.  The victim who was trying to enter his apartment to call police was knocked to the floor as the suspect continued to assault him.  The suspect then threatened to stab him with a utility knife. 

The suspect’s 29-year-old wife became involved and attacked the victim’s wife punching her in face and throwing a cup at her.  The victim’s wife told Officers “Joe’s” wife is pregnant and refused to defend herself.   “Joe’s” wife was uncooperative with police and denied her husband’s involvement telling them he was incarcerated. 

The victim’s sustained minor injuries in the assault.  The investigation is ongoing and will be investigated by the Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Bureau.

Man Jailed After Trying to Buy Beer with a Fake $100

Officers A. Thurman and J. Luera responded to the Stripes Convenience Store at Staples and Leopard Streets for a Hispanic trying to pay with a counterfeit $100 dollar bill.  Rene Tanguma (08/16/81) was detained in the parking lot by Officer Luera. 

Officer Thurman contacted the store cashier who reported Tanguma stepped up to the counter to pay for beer and a cigar valued at $3.01 with a $100 dollar bill.  The cashier told Officers the bill felt odd and it had not been cut correctly.  She checked for the watermark and could not find one. 

Tanguma was asked to wait while she got his change and police were called.  Tanguma paid for the merchandise with a $5.00 dollar bill and walked out of the store when he was detained by police. 

He was taken to the Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and interviewed by Financial Crimes Detectives.  Tanguma was arrested and charged with Forgery of a Government Instrument/Money/Securities which a 3rd Degree Felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

One Man Charged with Robbery, Police Looking for Second Suspect

Police en route to a local department store for a robbery were provided with additional suspect information. Lt. B. Ward and Senior Officer M. Ayala detained a man matching the suspect description given as he walked eastbound on Laredo Street.

Officers contacted the victim he told them he was sitting at a bus bench showing his phone to another male when a green Chevrolet pulled up to the curb. A man got out of the car and approached him. Both men who were strangers to the victim began assaulting him, punching him in the face. The men took the victim’s phone and backpack. The suspect who took the backpack returned to the vehicle and drove off, leaving the other suspect to flee on foot.

Gilberto Reyes (03/18/63) who was detained by Officers was positively identified by the victim and a witness as one of the robbers. Reyes was also found to have the victim’s phone in his pant pocket and arrested. Reyes was charged with Robbery.

The second suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 5’6” to 5’7” feet tall and last seen driving a green four door Chevrolet.  Anyone with any information on this crime is asked to call Crime Stop Stoppers at 888-TIPS or submit a tip online at www.888TIPS.com.  Tipsters can earn a cash reward if the second suspect is arrested.

The victim sustained minor injuries which did not require medical treatment. His phone was recovered and returned to him.

Five Escape Uninjured After SUV Plunges into Corpus Christi Bay

Officers responded to a submerged vehicle at the Lawrence Street T-Head shortly before midnight. Upon their arrival, Officers found two of the concrete pylons along with the guide wires had been damaged.  Officers report bubbles rising from the surface, but the white 2001 Ford Expedition was no longer visible. 

Police were told contradictory accounts of the accident by the driver and the five occupants who told Officers a “dog” ran in front of them causing the driver to lose control as he swerved to avoid it.  The driver jumped the curb, struck the pylons and guide wires landing in the bay. 

The 23-year  driver was issued a citation for Unsafe Change from a Direct Course, but the charge was changed to Reckless Driving when Marina Patrol provided surveillance video of the accident.  The video showed the SUV following another vehicle with both of them swerving from side to side as they traveled eastbound on the T-Head.  The driver of the Expedition lost control and either fell or jumped out the moving vehicle.   The SUV continued on and landed in the bay with its five passengers still inside.  All passengers, three females, 16, 19, 36  and two males 14, 18 were able to safely get out of the car before Officers arrived. 

The Corpus Christi Police Dive was called to assist and marked the SUV’s location with a buoy to prevent any boating accidents.  At 9:00 am this morning the Dive Team was able to retrieve the submerged vehicle with a Light Vehicle Recovery System which enables Dive Team members to move the sunken vehicle closer to the surface and shore.

Two Men Ejected From Club Return To Destroy Vehicles

Corpus Christi Police are seeking two men that broke several car windows and shot several cars with a firearm after they were kicked out of a local nightclub.

Several men attempted to sell jewelry in the parking lot of the business when a fight happened. The employees of the business told the men to leave and not return. Two of the men returned, one with a crow bar, and the other with a pistol.

The man with the crowbar broke the windows to three cars in the parking lot. The man with the pistol shot the same cars with the broken windows.

A woman exited the business and the man with the pistol pointed the firearm in her direction. The woman went back into the building and was not harmed.

The man with the pistol was described as a Hispanic male, 5 ft. 10 in., about 180 pounds, in his 20’s in age that wore a blue and white striped polo shirt, shorts and white tennis shoes. The man with the pistol also has a red lip tattoo on his neck.

The man with the crowbar was described as a Hispanic male also in his twenties in age, 5 ft. 8 in., 180 pounds, and wore a black shirt, white shorts, and white shoes.

The two men got into a gold car to leave the area. No injuries were reported and the property damage is estimated to be $3,000.

Sister’s Dispute At Funeral Leads to Brother’s Assault

Officers arrived to find the 37-year-old victim shouting in the front of his home.  The victim who had several scratches to both sides of his face told Police he had been assaulted inside his home.  He reported a male and a female walked into his apartment looking for a female who assaulted their sister. 

The victim asked the brother and sister duo to leave and began to push them out of his home.  It was then the pair began assaulting the victim punching him in the face, while the female scratched his face.  A dispute at a funeral prompted the victim’s assault.

The suspects left in a red Ford Expedition westbound on Leopard Street.  The male is described as a bald Hispanic male, 20 to 30 years of age, 5’3” feet tall, and weighing 200 to 225 lbs.  He has a tattoo of “Corpitos” on his chest.  The female is described as a heavyset Hispanic female, 20 to 30 years of age, 5’6” feet tall and weighing 200 to 230 lbs.

Intoxicated Woman Arrested While Her 2 Month Old Alone At Home

A 21-year-old woman was arrested for public intoxication while her 2 month old child was unattended in a nearby apartment.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a disturbance call in which a woman stood in the intersection of 22nd Street and Ruth Street, held a beer and yelled a person. The woman, 21-year-old Sophia Pichardo (12/20/1990), told police she lived on a county road and did not provide an actual address for her place of residence.

Pichardo displayed indications that she was strongly intoxicated and was a danger to herself or others if she were left alone. Pichardo was arrested for public intoxication.

Pichardo was placed in the back seat of the patrol car and Pichardo then told police officers her 2 moth old child was alone in an apartment at the 2400 block of Kingsolving Court. Police Patrol Officers investigated the apartment and discovered an unattended 2 month old child.

Child Protective Services was called to the scene to investigate and provide safe placement of the child.

Pichardo was arrested for public intoxication, a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. Pichardo was additionally charged with Abandoning a Child, a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

“Delete that Text?” You Didn’t Win a Target Gift Card Scam Alert

The Corpus Christi Financial Crimes Unit and the Better Business Bureau would like to alert the community about a new scam in which mobile phone users are  receiving suspicious messages.  The text messages are purported to be from Target and announce you as a winner of a free gift card.  The drawing is a scam and your information is obtained by the scammers.

Man Run Over Trying to Break Up Fight

Officers responded to Molly’s Irish Pub for a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian.  The 34-year-old man told Police, he was trying to break up a fight between two groups of sisters who had been asked to leave the pub. The women began yelling and screaming at one another as one group of sisters drove off.  A fight ensued between the occupants of the car and the other group of sisters still in the parking lot.  

When the victim tried to break up the fight, the driver reversed her vehicle and ran over his foot and ankle.  The driver also hit a parked Chevrolet Avalanche pick-up truck as they fled in a black Nissan passenger car.  The suspect vehicle returned, but fled yet again.  The owner of the Avalanche followed the suspects and obtained a license plate number.  The victim was taken to Spohn Memorial.

Officers talked to the two other women assaulted and one of them told Police she was knocked to the ground by the vehicle.  This victim complained of pain to her ankle and left knee, but refused to be taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel to the hospital, seeking her own transportation.  The other female did not have any visible injuries.

The suspects were known to the women and their information provided to Officers.  Both women, 29 and 36 years of age appear to have an Alice, TX address.  The investigation will continue and the women are facing Aggravated Assault, two counts of Assaults, and Reckless Damage or Destruction charges.
