Patrol Officer Bit By Dog On Countiss Drive

Occurred Sunday, November 4, 2012, 15:30, 2700 Countiss Drive, Dogbite, 1211004741

A Corpus Christi Police Officer was injured by a dog bite Sunday afternoon on the 2700 block of Countiss Drive.

The Patrol Officer responded to an ambulance call in which a 5-year-old boy was injured. The boy was injured in a trampoline accident and the officer went to leave the home after an ambulance crew arrived to provide the boy with medical treatment. A dog then bit the officer on the right calf and broke the skin.

Animal Control Officers arrived and removed the dog from the home as procedure.

A few tips for pet owners should be observed when emergency crews are called to a home: Confine pets to a safe area out of the way of the emergency so that the animal will not interfere with people or equipment that is unfamiliar to the animal. Be aware of common triggers of aggression which include a family member who is injured, in pain, ill, or the approach of strangers. The approach of a person in uniform or unusual attire, unexpected touching, unfamiliar settings, crowds, and loud noises are also common triggers of aggression for many animals. Your community animal care agency and humane society may offer references for professional help to deal with a pets training to reduce the risk of aggressive behavior with pets. This is especially important in the upcoming Holiday season when visitors come to the home.

Fulfill basic animal-care responsibilities. License your animal as required by law and provide regular veterinary care, including rabies vaccinations.
