Status of the 71st:

The Corpus Christi Police Department 71st Academy session ended week 2 with a boom! The Corpus Christi Police Department Bomb Squad delivered an 8 hour block of instruction on explosives awareness. The purpose of the class was to train the Cadets to properly and safely respond to bomb threats and reports for suspicious items. The Bomb Squad then provided a demonstration for the cadets at the Corpus Christi Police Bomb Range in order to exhibit the dangers of explosive materials officers may encounter on patrol.

The Cadets were assigned to read Chapters 3,4, and 5 of the Corpus Christi Police General Rules Manual for homework over the weekend. Chapter 3 covers Supervisor Responsibilities; Chapter 4 explains Uniforms, Appearance, and Equipment; and Chapter 5 provides the standard for Conduct and Performance.

“Color Me Rad” Street Closure

Northbound Shoreline Boulevard will be closed to traffic between William Street and Resaca Street.  Mesquite Street will be closed between Palo Alto Street and Port Avenue.  Port Avenue will be closed between Sam Rankin Street and Chaparral Street.  No Parking will be allowed on the seawall beginning at 10:00p.m., Friday, February 1, 2013 between Cooper’s Alley and Resaca Street.

Traffic control devices will guide traffic around the event area.  Motorists should expect delays and should seek alternate routes to by-pass this area if possible.  Motorists are advised to observe all warning signs and barricades for their safety and that of the event participants and spectators.

Teen Injured During Robbery

A 14-year-old reported to Police he was assaulted by ten individuals as he walked home from school.  The teenager told Officers he was attacked with board and punched numerous times during the assault until he was knocked to the ground. His attackers continued to kick and hit him; ripping both his earrings from his ears.

The victim advised the suspects ages ranged from 14 to 20 years of age.  The victim was unable to provide Officers with a motive for the assault.

Store Employee Uninjured During Robbery

Officers were dispatched to the EZ Money in Moore Plaza for a hold up alarm.  Once Officers arrived they were informed the loan company had been robbed.

A 26-year-old store employee told Officers an armed man entered the store and pointed a handgun at her demanding she hand over the money.  The man walked out of the business with an undetermined amount of money.

The suspect is described as a White male, 30 to 40 years of age, 5’10” to 5’11” feet tall and weighing 160 to 180 lbs.   He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved plaid shirt, blue jeans, and dirty shoes.  The suspect’s face was covered with a bandanna and a baseball cap.

Police Remember Juan Rincon Prieto

The Corpus Christi Police Department remembers Senior Officer Juan Rincon Prieto and his line of duty death on February 2, 1993. Officer Prieto was directing traffic at Up River Road and Suntide when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck. Officer Prieto had served in the Corpus Christi Police Department for 27 years and was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

A park on Woodland Creek Drive in Corpus Christi near Callicoate Road is named Senior Officer Prieto Park in his memory.

Operation Imitation Nation

On Friday February 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Narcotics Vice Investigations Division (NVID) in conjunction with the Gang Unit, the Organized Crime Unit and the Uniform Patrol Division kicked off “Operation Imitation Nation” and served 8 search warrants as well as 8 arrest warrants at various retail establishments throughout Corpus Christi.

The warrants were issued as the result of a 16 month undercover investigation by NVID into the selling and distribution of illegal synthetic marijuana products and illegal drug paraphernalia by the targeted retail locations.

There will be a press conference this evening at a time yet to be determined at which time the media will be provided further details of the operation.  The locations at which search and arrest warrants were served are as follows:

Man Untruthful About Home Invasion

Corpus Christi Police Detectives met with a 24-year-old man who reported to Police he was shot in his home when he interrupted a burglary.  During their interview with Detectives they learned that the homeowner had been untruthful in previous statements to Officers.

Detectives report the gunshot the man sustained was self-inflicted.  Detectives are no longer investigating the Burglary of a Habitation and Aggravated Assault, but Detectives will meet with Nueces County District Attorney’s Office to discuss the possibility filing charges on the homeowner for filing a False Report to a Police Officer which is a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days and a $2,000 fine.

Wanted Woman Flees to Local Cemetary

Police were called to The Rose Hill Cemetery to assist with a possible wanted suspect.  A Refugio Police Officer had attempted to arrest the woman at a local business when she fled through a bathroom room window. Following up on tips received, the Officer located Shannel Donna Tilley (02/03/75) hiding out in the cemetery.

Tilly was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  She was charged with four outstanding warrants:  Forgery (No Bond), two Forgery of a Financial Instrument~Elderly with a Surety Bond of $25,000 each,  and  a second Forgery warrant with a $25,000 surety bond.

Woman Wakes To Find Burglars In Her Home on Naples Street

                A 48-year-old woman woke up and found two strange men in her home on the 500 block of Naples Street Wednesday afternoon.

The 48-year-old woman told Corpus Christi Police that she woke early Wednesday afternoon and then discovered her home was ransacked. The woman said she was then hit on the back of the head and the two men ran outside to leave the area. The woman refused medical treatment and said she is not sure if anything was taken from the home.

The woman was unable to give a good description of the two men other than that one of the men wore a black hoodie. The two suspects are still at large.

Get a “Sweetheart of a Deal” at our Monthly Auction

The Corpus Christi Police Department’s commitment to “Keep Corpus Christi Safe” has continued with its “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative”

On Saturday, February 2, 2013, a total of 76 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will be auctioned at the Corpus Christi Police Department’s  Vehicle Impound Lot located at 5485 Greenwood Drive during our monthly auction. The site has four paved acres for an auction lot.

Approximately 18 of these vehicles are “No Insurance” impounds. On Friday, February 1, 2013, the general public will be allowed to register and view the vehicles to be auctioned from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no registration fee.

On the day of the auction, the general public can continue to register and view the vehicles from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The auction will commence promptly at 10:00 a.m.   The vehicles to be auctioned can be viewed at www.siskauction.com. An auction list may also be downloaded from the same website.

The department’s strong stand and enforcement of this “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative” will continue and all vehicles involved in accidents will be impounded and the driver cited if they are unable to provide financial proof of insurance. Driver’s license and proof of financial responsibility checkpoints will continue to be conducted at the Shift Captains’ authorization.

During 2012, Officers issued 5,756 citations for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility and impounded 1,009 vehicles for the same charge.
