Traffic Accident Hit & Run Pedestrian

Traffic investigators received a call for a major traffic accident involving a pedestrian in the 700 block of Park Avenue shortly before 10:00 am. When they arrived they located a 59-year-old male victim lying on the roadway with critical injuries from having been struck by a vehicle. He was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses tell investigators that a red truck was traveling east on the 700 block of Park Avenue when the victim ran out into the street not in a cross walk and was struck by the truck.

Officers located and impounded a red truck on Laredo Street.  Further investigation revealed it was not involved in the accident.

The Traffic Division will continue their investigation in an attempt to locate both the driver and suspect vehicle.  Witnesses describe the suspect vehicle as a red 1980″s GMC or Chevrolet pick-up truck with minor front end damage.  At this time there is no description available on the driver.

Victim Assaulted Before Being Carjacked

Officers contacted the victim who reported he gave a friend a ride home at 3:30 in the morning.  Shortly thereafter, he returned to his friend’s house to pick up some DVD’s when he was approached by a male and struck several times on the head.  The suspect continued assaulting the victim, kicking and hitting him as he was fell to the ground.

The suspect took the victim’s keys and drove off in his grandfather’s vehicle.  The victim sustained a bruised eye and abrasions to his back and elbow.  He declined medical treatment.

The suspect is described as a 22-year-old Hispanic male, 5’11” feet tall, and weighing 190 lbs.  He was seen driving off in a silver 2000 Ford Expedition.

Airing Out the Truck Attracts Officer’s Attention

Officer E. Roman observed a yellow Chevrolet pick-up truck traveling on the wrong side of the road with both front doors open.  The Officer pulled the truck over and talked to both the driver and passenger.  While doing so, he caught a whiff of Marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Both the driver Andrew Andres-Daniel Vargas (08/13/92) and the passenger Michael Garibay (01/11/92) were arrested when a baggie of Marijuana was found and Garibay lied about his identity.

Both Vargas and Garibay were charged with Possession of Marijuana.  Garibay was additionally charged with several outstanding Nueces County warrants for Probation Violation on a Possession of Marijuana charge (No Bond) and Failure to Appear for Evading, Failure to Identify, and Indecent Exposure ($5,000 Bond).  Garibay also had an outstanding Municipal Court warrant for Violation of Promise to Appear with a $477.10 Bond.

Three Juveniles Detained, Charged with Graffiti

Officers contacted a witness who reported several juveniles were spray painting a RTA bus stop bench in the 3100 block of Carver Drive.  Officers searched the area and found three juvenile males with spray paint on their hands.  The juveniles’ ages, 10, 11, and 12 were detained.

They were transported and booked at the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center.  They were all charged with Graffiti.  Graffiti vandalism of this amount is considered a Class “B” Misdemeanor, punishable by 180 days in a detention facility and fined up to $2,000.  In addition to the criminal charges, parents of juvenile graffiti vandals can be held liable in civil court for the amount of damages caused by their errant children.

The CCPD is hosting a Neighborhood Meeting February 1st, 6:00 PM at the South Park Middle School Cafeteria, 3001 McArdle Road.  The meeting is intended to engage residents of the 78415 zip code with the Police Department and other City and State partners to eradicate graffiti in their neighborhood.

The meeting will include information on the reporting of graffiti, the filing of police vandalism reports via our Telephone Reporting Unit or Online Reporting,  and how to remain anonymous when calling tips on suspects committing crime.

Traffic Violators Arrested As They Try To A Pull Fast One

Occurred on 1/30/12, 11:20 p.m.   Possession of Controlled Substance   1400 Laredo     1201300157 

Officer S. Gonzalez pulled over a vehicle for a PT Cruiser for a traffic violation. During their conversation, Benito Rodriguez (07/10/58) denied having drugs and asked that Officer if he would like to search his vehicle. 

Officer Gonzalez took him up on the offer and found Crack Cocaine secreted away in the cup holder beneath his drink. 

Rodriguez was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Occurred on 1/31/12, 01:03 a.m.   Possession of Marijuana  jefferson Road & Saratoga Blvd.   1201310002 

Officer Vasquez clocked a silver Ford Mustang speeding as it traveled southbound on Weber Road.  The Mustang was pulled over and the driver Albert Benavidez (10/20/63) jumped out of the car and instantaneously walked  towards the Officer  in an attempt to keep him away from his vehicle. 

The Officer, not fooled by Benavidez’s cooperative nature, found a marijuana pipe in his pocket.  Benavidez was arrested.  A baggie of Marijuana was found hidden between the driver’s seat and center console when the Mustang was inventoried. 

Benavidez was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana.  He was also cited for the Speeding and Failure to Present Driver’s License.

Shooter Bails from Home, Drugs Confiscated

Officers responded to the area for complaints of shots being fired. Upon their arrival, Officers located spent shell casings in front of the residence. Officers checked the home for potential victims, but found a variety of drugs and drug paraphernalia instead. 

The Narcotics & Vice Division served a search warrant on the residence and confiscated  2.14 oounces of Cocaine valued at $2,000 and 6.12 ounces of Hydro-Marijuana valued at $2,200.  They also seized 18.63 grams of pills and  3.18 grams of Heroin valued at $300.   Also seized was over $2,300 in U.S. currency.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by The Narcotics & Vice Division.

Brotherly Love

Occurred on 1/30/12, 8:38 p.m.  Burglary   1710 Hemlock     1201300145 

Officers contacted the 58-year-old victim who reported her front door had been kicked and she believed her brother was the culprit.  Officers contacted Dwayne Cecil Porter (09/26/58) who was seen walking away from the residence with the victim’s purse.  

Porter was positively identified by the sister and arrested.  He was charged with Burglary of a Residence and the victim’s purse returned to her.

Investigation Leads to Arrest of Tagger

Graffiti Task Force Detective S. Smith culminated a graffiti investigation which began in June of 2011 and ended Friday, January 27, 2012 with the apprehension of a 16-year-old male.

The investigation revealed the juvenile offender had been responsible for spraying graffiti on a Texas Department of Transportation electronic message board in the 4100 block of S. Staples on June 20th, 2011.  The damage was estimated at $2,400.

At the time of the damage, the suspect remained unidentified, but the offender was arrested in October 2011.  This arrest provided evidence that eventually linked him to the graffiti vandalism in June.

The juvenile vandal was taken into custody at a local high school and transported to the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center, where he was charged with Graffiti over $1,500 <$20,000.  Graffiti vandalism of this amount is considered a State Jail Felony, punishable by as much as two years in state prison and fined up to $10,000. In addition to the criminal charges, parents of juvenile graffiti vandals can be held liable in civil court for the amount of damages caused by their errant children.

Graffiti Vandal Arrested

Officers keeping an eye out for taggers observed Ramsey Hernandez (11/01/92) placing a decal with his initial on a speed limit sign in the 2900 block of Sacky Drive.

Hernandez was arrested and charged with Graffiti.

The Corpus Christi Police Department is committed to zero tolerance for graffiti vandals, especially in this neighborhood.

Wrong Way Driver Jailed

Occurred on 1/30/12, 12:20 a.m.   Driving While Intoxicated   1100 Hwy 358    1201300005/C1200687 

MetroComm Dispatchers issued a B.O.L.O. (Be on the Look Out) for a white GMC pick-up truck traveling westbound in the eastbound lane.  The wrong way driver Richard Daugherty (05/30/85) was in the middle lane when he struck a red Honda Civic driven by a 20-year-old female.  The female was able to swerve to some extent and prevented a head-on collision.  She sustained minor injuries and transported to Spohn Memorial. 

Daugherty who was not injured in the collision appeared intoxicated and  a blood warrant obtained. 

He was medically cleared and arrested.  Daugherty was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
