Location: 1200 Elgin Street
Offense: Burglary
P.C.  30.02     Second Degree Felony

Case Number: 1512170012
Corpus Christi Police were called by a cab company dispatcher after she began receiving panic alarms from one of her cab drivers who was not answering her radio calls.

The dispatcher was able to track the cab and told police that it was stationary in the 1200 block of Elgin Street.

When Officers arrived they were able to talk to the cab driver who said that he picked up a male suspect on Airline Road near Alameda Street and he wanted a ride to the 5400 block of Ocean Drive. When they arrived the suspect asked the driver to wait while he picked up some tools from a work site that were his.  The suspect retuned a short time later with several items.

The suspect then requested the cab driver take him to a home in the 4900 block of Ocean Drive to pick up some more stuff.  When the suspect retuned to the cab he had more property.  It was at this point the cab driver realized the suspect could be stealing property from these different homes.  He pushed the alarm in his cab to notify his dispatcher that he wanted police assistance without having to verbally speak to her.

The suspect then requested the cab driver take him to the 1200 block of Elgin Street to drop him off, and this is where police were able to catch up to them.

After an investigation, Officers determined that the items the suspect had loaded up into the cab, valued at over $1150, had been stolen from two different homes on Ocean Drive. The suspect also attempted to pay his $44 cab fee with a credit card he had stolen from one of the homes.

Officers arrested, John Edward Casanova (09/16/1980), for two counts of burglary and credit card abuse.

All of the stolen property was returned to the owners.
