NVID MINOR STING RESULTS IN THREE VIOLATIONS

Detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Investigations Division conducted an undercover operation Saturday evening, checking compliance at fifteen beer and wine retailers across the city. Three of the retailers visited by Investigators sold alcoholic beverages to individuals under the age of 21. NVID’s goal is zero.

During the operation, cooperating individuals, under the direction and close supervision of NVID Detectives attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages from various convenience stores throughout the city. All individuals are over the age of eighteen but under twenty-one, the legal age to purchase alcoholic beverages in Texas. NVID Detectives checked fifteen businesses, and clerks at three of those stores sold alcoholic beverages to the underage operatives.

The store clerks who sold the alcoholic beverages, face a charge of Sale to Minors (TABC 106.3), a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4000. NVID will forward the results of this operation to the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission for administrative action against the permittees, which could include revocation, suspension and/or fines.

Saturday’s operation was conducted in advance of Memorial Day and next weekend’s high school graduation ceremonies, as families flock to Corpus Christi beaches to enjoy the sun and fun. The goal behind Saturday’s operation is to ensure that all beach goers, graduates and their families enjoy the festivities, without the tragedy that often accompanies underage drinking. Alcohol is a common denominator in underage traffic fatalities and frequently leads to numerous other negative consequences. NVID intends to conduct more of these operations in the near future, including repeat visits of previous offenders. NVID will send letters to all businesses that were inspected, including those that were in compliance. For those businesses that were not in compliance, future infractions will likely result in the immediate arrest of the offenders. During Saturday’s operation, five convenience stores that had sold to minors during past NVID Minor Sting operations were targeted, but did not repeat their mistakes by selling again.

The Corpus Christi Police Department continues to collaborate with all government and private entities to combat underage drinking and help accomplish our mission of working with the community to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and enhance public safety.

NVID DETECTIVES RAID TWO MORE ILLEGAL GAMBLING ESTABLISHMENTS

Detectives from the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Investigations Division continued to put pressure on illicit gambling operations this week, serving three search warrants related to two separate illegal gambling establishments within the city limits. On Wednesday afternoon, NVID Detectives raided an unnamed game room on the 5200 block of Everhart Road. During the search, Detectives found and seized sixty items of illegal gambling equipment. Employee Yolanda Garcia, age 54, was arrested and charged with violation of the Nueces County Game Room Ordinance, Keeping a Gambling Place, Gambling Promotion, and Possession of a Gambling Device.

On Thursday afternoon NVID Detectives served a search warrant at a residence on the 3400 block of Pineda Street. There, Detectives found and seized several documents and electronic devices suspected to contain records from an illegal gambling operation. Detectives also seized over $3100 in US currency and arrested Yi Han, age 32, for violation of the Nueces County Game Room Ordinance, Keeping a Gambling Place, Gambling Promotion, and Possession of a Gambling Device. A subsequent search warrant at the Lucky Treasures Game Room in the 11100 block of Leopard Street resulted in the seizure of 54 items of illegal gambling equipment. Neither of the two game rooms were open for business at the time the search warrants were served, so no patrons were cited for gambling.

The two operations were the result of intensive, multi-month-long investigations into the businesses that uncovered evidence of illegal gambling. The two businesses do not appear to be connected, but the investigation continues into each, and additional charges and arrests are possible.

The Corpus Christi Police Department reminds citizens that game rooms which pay out cash rewards, or rewards that can be immediately redeemed for cash are engaging in illegal gambling. Patrons as well as the management of these establishments face criminal charges.

The Corpus Christi Police Department continues to collaborate with our local, state, and federal partners to investigate and combat illegal gambling. Investigators will continue to enforce all Texas gambling laws, which will help accomplish our mission to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and to improve the quality of life in our community.
