“Facebook” Meeting Ends in Robbery

Corpus Christi Police Officers were called to the 4400 block of Kostoryz for a robbery.  They arrived to find a 19-year-old woman who reported she advertised a pair of Nike tennis on Facebook and agreed to meet the “buyer” in the H.E.B. parking lot.

The man accompanied by his girlfriend and another woman arrived in a grey minivan.  The man did not exit the van, but did inspect the tennis shoes.  He then grabbed the shoes and attempted to drive off without paying for them.

The victim tried to hold on to them, but the suspect began punching her in face before she bit him on the hand.  The suspect drove off and the victim was dragged for a few feet before she fell to the pavement.  She provided Officers with the license plate of the minivan.

Through further investigation, Senior Officer J. Villarreal was able to follow-up on leads which led him to the suspect’s mother and girlfriend who both lied about the identity of the suspect in the robbery.  The suspect’s mother tried to lay the blame on a nephew.

Diana Rodriguez Botello (01/02/66) and Alexandria Coughran (02/06/94) were both arrested and charged with Interference with Public Duties. The stolen pair of tennis were recovered and returned to the victim.

The case has been turned over to the Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Detectives who will continue their investigation.

Facebook has become another outlet other than Craig’s List to sell stuff we no longer need or want, but the Police Department asks that you exercise caution.  The following are several safety tips to follow if you decide to use this avenue to market your property.

  • Don’t post personal information on your ad or post.
  • A home or cell phone number can be used in a reverse lookup and will show a billing or home address along with owner information.
  • Communicate with the buyer/seller only through e-mail until you decide if you want to go through with the transaction.
  • Make sure you feel at ease with the buyer/seller.
  • Bring a friend or two and always meet during the day, preferably in a public place.
  • Never agree to meet at your home.
  • Ask for an identification card or driver’s license in case there’s a problem with the transaction.
