Grant Buys Medical Kit That Saves Life

Occurred Thursday, June 21, 2012, 2:00am 2115 Ayers Street, 1206210015

A new Corpus Christi Police Officer on his first month of duty used medical equipment provided by the Crime Control and Prevention District to provide a possibly life saving act on a victim of an aggravated assault.

Corpus Christi Police Officer Allan Miller responded to a fight in progress at Diana’s Place Bar on Thursday, June 21, 2012. Officer Miller saw the 32-year-old victim had significant damage to an arm with serious blood loss. Emergency Medical Services crews were not at the scene and Officer Miller directly retrieved a medical kit provided by grant funds from the city crime control board.

The Police Department bought 460 “go bags” that contain first aid kits, tourniquets, blood clot accelerants, and C.P.R. tools for use for officers in emergencies. Police Officers are not trained medical technicians, but the tools were provided to be used on other police officers.

Officer Miller chose to use the medical kit to control the bleeding experienced by the 32-year-old aggravated assault victim. Commander John Houston of the Personnel Development Division in the Corpus Christi Police Department said the action by Officer Miller was likely a life saving event with tools officers would not have without the money provided by the crime control board.

The 32-year-old man’s attackers have not been yet been apprehended. Police continue to search for two stocky Hispanic males that both wore blue jeans and were heavily tattooed. The two suspects drove away in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle with bright blue headlights.

Anyone with additional information about this crime should call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS (8477) or submit an online tip at www.888TIPS.com. If the information leads to an arrest it could earn the caller a cash reward.
