Traffic Investigators Called For Fatal Crash

Corpus Christi Police responded to a crash involving a motorcycle and three different vehicles at 9:45 PM along South Padre Island Drive East just before Airline Road on April 17.  While en route to the call, officers were told that bystanders were performing CPR on the driver of the motorcycle.  Due to the seriousness of the motorcyclist’s injuries, Corpus Christi Police Traffic Investigators were requested.  The crash investigation revealed that the 27-year-old driver of the motorcycle was traveling at an unsafe speed along the freeway access road when it struck the rear passenger side of a Chevrolet Tahoe that was slowing due to traffic congestion.  The motorcyle then veered off the access road, striking a raised curb, and the driver was ejected.  The motorcycle, traveling without a driver, continued, crashing into a van.  The motorcycle driver impacted on a car that was waiting to exit the Golden Corral Restaurant and was seriously injured.  The freeway access road between South Staples Street and Airline Road was closed for nearly two hours while officers conducted the crash investigation.  The motorcycle driver was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS and died from his injuries just after 1 AM this morning.   At this time, no charges are expected to be filed against anyone involved in the crash.

Case Number: 1504090036
A 53 year old store owner fired three shots at a fleeing suspect who had stolen two cartons of cigarettes from the JK Foodmart located at 3546 South Padre Island Drive.

Corpus Christi Police arrived at the store and were told by the owner that a black Honda Accord pulled into the store parking lot and a front seat passenger got out while the driver stayed inside the vehicle.

The suspect asked the store owner for two cartons of cigarettes and then attempted to pay for them with credit cards that were denied.  When the owner told the suspect he couldn’t sell him the items, the suspect grabbed the two cartons and fled out the door of the store and got into the Honda.

While the Honda was backing out attempting to leave, the owner produced a handgun, that he kept at the store, and went out to confront the suspect.  The suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot and the store owner fired three rounds from a handgun.

The suspect was last seen running north on Carroll Lane.  It does not appear as though he was struck by any of the shots that were fired by the owner.

The driver of the Honda was detained by officers, but at this time no charges have been filed against him.

The suspect was not located and officers continue to investigate this crime.
