Patrol Report September 4, 2014

The Corpus Christi Police Department generated 207 reports for formal criminal complaints from midnight September 3 to 7:00 a.m. on September 4, 2014. These are samples of the criminal complaints filed by the Corpus Christi Police for that time period.

Offense:  Crash Investigation          

Case Number: C1403550
Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a crash involving an eighteen wheel tractor trailer and a natural gas pipeline. The 57 year old male driver was making a right hand turn from a private drive onto the 2800 block of Countiss Drive when the 2005 Freightliner cleared the turn but his trailer did not.  The trailer went into a ditch and struck a gas meter rupturing the line causing natural gas to come out from under the trailer. The trailer was loaded with 47,000 pounds of pipe and was leaning to one side. Corpus Christi Fire Units and City Gas Units responded to the scene and successfully turned off the leaking gas.  Damage to the meter and pipeline was estimated to be about $1500.  At this time no citations have been issued regarding this crash and there were no injuries reported.

Offense:  Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon     (PC   46.02   Class A Misdemeanor)
Case Number: 1409030128
A Corpus Christi Police Officer on patrol stopped a motorcycle that he observed traveling at a high rate of speed along S. Padre Island Dr. near Waldron Rd. When the officer contacted the driver, he observed a bulge in the brown leather jacket he was wearing and then felt the handle of a gun. The officer retrieved the 38 caliber handgun from an inside pocket of the jacket and arrested Joseph McKinnon (12/13/1986).  Further investigation revealed that the serial numbers to the gun had been sanded down and only two numbers could be read. The suspect was additionally charged with tampering with identification numbers, a Class A misdemeanor.

Offense:  Accident Involving Serious Injury   (PC   550.021 Third Degree Felony)
Case Number: 1409040022
Corpus Christi Police Officersresponded to the area of 151 Hustlin Hornet Drive for a motorcycle leaning against a guard rail on the side of the road.  Officers found the damaged motorcycle and a large amount of blood indicating evidence of a crash.  Officers began to search the area for a victim when they were contacted by the emergency room at Bay Area Hospital. A 34 year old male crash victim had just arrived at the hospital with serious injuries to the ribs, a collapsed lung, and a burn to his face. The female driver of the vehicle that had crashed into the motorcycle had driven the victim to the hospital but did not stay.   The female suspect took the victim at the hospital and then left in a small black in color SUV with heavy front end damage.   The victim was admitted to the hospital for his injuries, and the Corpus Christi Police Hit and Run investigators are still looking for the female driver.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a business located at 5001 S. Padre Island Dr. after a 33 year old female store employee was injured while trying to stop a shoplifting.  A male and female were observed passing all points of sale without making an effort to pay for any items they had and the store employee attempted to stop them.  The employee tried to grab the items back from the female but was unsuccessful.  The male jumped in the back seat of a 2011 blue Ford F150 truck and the female got in the driver seat. While the employee was holding onto the stolen property, the female suspect drove away at a high rate of speed, dragging the employee several feet causing road rash on her elbows. CCFD EMS responded to treat the employee for her injuries, the truck was last seen going east toward the Home Depot.

Gang Unit Finds Several Wanted Suspects

Corpus Christi Police Gang Unit Officers were able to secure two arrest warrants on Jose Cruz Esquivel (05/17/1983) for engaging in organized criminal activity and manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance. Both arrest warrants hold $100,000 bond each. Both of the warrants were obtained just after 4:00 PM on Tuesday and by 6:30 PM he was located at a home in the 200 block of Hudson St. and arrested. Gang Unit Officers then went to the 600 block of Gordon St. after they received information that some other suspects wanted on outstanding arrest warrants were in that area. Officers stopped a blue Mazda in the area being driven by Bruce Johnson (09/05/1974). He was found to have an outstanding probation violation warrant and he was arrested. That arrest led officers to several other wanted individuals. Officers found Eric Davila (10/31/1980) standing outside of an apartment. He was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for possession of cocaine. That arrest warrant had no bond. Inside one of the apartments officers located wanted person Ruben Coddington (12/27/1982) who was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for tampering / fabricating evidence.  There was no bond on this arrest warrant. A female inside the apartment, Nichole Mcaninch (03/16/1989), was arrested for hindering apprehension after she was found to have attempted to hide the wanted person from police.

A 26 year old male called Corpus Christi Police and told them that someone had taken his green 2000 Buick Park Avenue.  He told officers he had parked his car and left it running while he went inside an apartment in the 2000 block of Treyway Lane to drop off groceries.  Officers arrived and made a stolen vehicle report and then less than an hour later the officers were driving through a neighboring apartment complex and found the vehicle parked in a parking space in the back corner of the parking lot. The stolen car was unoccupied and not damaged.  Officers notified the victim who then came over to retrieve his vehicle.  At this time no one has been arrested in this case, and there is no suspect description.

Corpus Christi Police Officers responding to an alarm at a business located at 5959 Williams Drive arrived and found the front door of the business had been removed off its hinges. No suspects were found inside. The 71 year old male business owner arrived and told officers that the ATM was missing. The ATM was thought to have around $2000 in it. Officers did observe tire tracks leading up to the front door.  This case is still under investigation, and no suspects have been identified.

A 21 year old man drove his roommate to the emergency room at Spohn Shoreline Hospital after an assault inside their apartment located at 5246 Weber Rd.  Corpus Christi Police found the 23 year old male victim had been beaten severely with a bat.  The investigation revealed that three males, the man who drove the victim, the victim, and another 38 year old man all live together in the apartment. At about 2:30 AM the 21 year old male left the apartment on foot after having an argument with his girlfriend over the phone. He stated that when he left that the victim and the other roommate were drinking but seemed to be laughing and having a good time.  When he returned about an hour later the victim was lying in a pool of blood on the living room floor.  The 38 year old suspect was not home when the man returned.  Officers responded to the apartment and located a crime scene and the possible weapon used, however, the suspect was not found.  At last report the victim was stable and had been transferred to Spohn MMC for further treatment.

Offense:  Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle    (PC 31.07       State Jail Felony)

A Corpus Christi Police Officer observed a stolen vehicle traveling on S Padre Island Dr. east near Ayers St. The 2013 Dodge ram truck had been reported stolen out of San Patricio County. The officer attempted to stop the stolen truck but it did not pull over.  The vehicle maintained its speed and lane of travel turning south onto Kostoryz Rd. When the vehicle got to Saratoga Blvd. it turned west toward Ayers St. Other officers responding to the call set out spike strips that the vehicle ran over at Saratoga Blvd and Ranger Dr. The vehicle continued to attempt to evade police and refused to stop.  The vehicle ran over a second set of spike strips set out by officers at Saratoga Blvd and the Crosstown Freeway Access Rd. The vehicle turned north onto the access road and finally stopped.  The driver and sole occupant, Vidal Garcia (03/29/1983), was taken into custody without incident and the truck was impounded.

A McDonald’s employee reported she was robbed at 8:19am. The 41 year old woman said she walked outside the store and a male ran to her from a black car which was parked in the Walgreens parking lot. The woman told officers the man sprayed her with a pepper spray and took a deposit bag from her. The suspect is described as a male 5 feet-10inches tall, 180 pounds, dark skin, and wore a dark cap, black sunglasses, gloves, dark colored pants and a gray hoodie with baby blue lettering on the front. At this time police are still investigating this robbery and no suspects have been arrested.  CCFD EMS responded to the scene however the victim refused medical treatment.

Wanted Person Daniel Martinez Arrested

A few hours after Corpus Christi Police Property Crime Detectives  obtained four arrest warrants for Daniel Martinez (12/24/1981), two warrants  for burglary of a building and two warrants  for theft,  he was found by officers.  These arrest warrants resulted from a search warrant that was executed at his home located at 1717 Nile Drive back on August 21.   Each warrant holds a $15,000 bond.

Officers stopped the 1999 red Dodge truck the suspect was driving in the 6400 block of Vincent Drive after they recognized him as a wanted person.  His truck was impounded.

This arrest is a result of an investigation that began on August 21 when the Corpus Christi Police Department Auto Theft Task Force executed a search warrant at 1717 Nile Drive and found several stolen items. Two trailers, two cement spreaders, two compressors, a welder, and other stolen equipment was found in the backyard and garage of the home.  No one was at home at the time officers  searched the home.

An off duty Corpus Christi Police Officer working at the Liberty Tire Service located at 6050 S. Padre Island Dr. was watching a storage container containing tires from the business when he saw a tan Chevrolet truck pull into the parking lot.  The truck with the driver and three other occupants backed up to the storage container and the driver, Jesse Jaramillo (02/18/1962), got out and loaded six tires into the back of his truck and left. The officer began to follow the truck and observed it was swerving through traffic and speeding.  The truck entered the freeway swerving from lane to lane almost striking several vehicles, and driving recklessly.  Other officers responding to the call were able to stop the truck at Weber Rd. and S. Padre Island Dr. Inside the truck was the driver, his two year old son and thirteen year old daughter, neither of which had on a seat belt.  Also his 39 year old wife was in the truck.  All of the occupants were released.  The driver was charged with child endangerment, a state jail felony, due to the fact that he was driving with disregard for the safety of the two year old.   He was also charged with theft of the tires which were valued at $600, reckless driving a Class B misdemeanor.  The truck was impounded.

Offense:  Possession of Dangerous Drugs   (HS 481.115    State Jail Felony)

Corpus Christi Police Officers on patrol stopped a 2006 black Dodge Ram truck for a traffic violation on McArdle Rd. and Antony St. The truck was driven by Emanuel Chavez (09/24/1983) and occupied by his front seat passenger Fernando Chavez (02/11/1977). Inside the truck in a backpack belonging to the driver officers found a crack pipe, hydrocodone and LSD tablets.  The driver was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.  The passenger was charged with possession of controlled substance, a state jail felony, after methamphetamine was found inside his wallet. The truck was impounded.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer on patrol saw a grey 2014 Ford Focus pull up to the traffic light on the access road of S. Padre Island Dr. at Weber Rd.  A yellow Corvette pulled up next to it shortly thereafter.  When the light turned green, both the Focus and the Corvette accelerated heavily continued to accelerate well above the posted speed limit of 45 miles an hour.  The Corvette entered the freeway and the Focus continued westbound on the access road, but did not slow down.  The officer was able to stop the vehicle and he contacted the driver Baldemar Romero (12/01/1991) and his 23 year old male front seat passenger.  The driver was found to have an active warrant with no bond for a charge of aggravated assault on a public servant.  Inside of his wallet officers located a small plastic bag containing cocaine, a state jail felony.  The driver was additionally charged with racing on a highway, a Class B misdemeanor and his car was impounded.

A 54 year old female victim contacted Corpus Christi Police after she was badly beaten about her face following a disturbance with her son in an apartment located in the 800 block of Hancock Ave. Officers observed the victim with two black eyes, a cut to her left eye brow, bloody nose, bloody mouth and a hand print around her neck and jaw area.  The victim said Joe Witherspoon (09/07/1985) had beaten her all night long, punching her all over face and choking her with his hand. The victim stated that she attempted to leave several times but her son would not let her out of the apartment and threatened to hurt her when she would try to leave.  At about 11:40 PM there was a knock on the apartment door and when the door was opened the female victim took off running out of the apartment for help. She made it over to a neighbor and called for police and an ambulance. Officers were about to take the son into custody without incident, the female was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital by CCFD EMS.

Bugsey’s Owner Arrested

Offense: Cruelty to Nonlivestock Animals (PC 49.092 SJF)
Case: 1408270080

On 29 August 2014, Corpus Christi Police Detectives obtained an arrest warrant ($25,000 bond) for Steven Mulligan (05/30/1966) for Cruelty to Animals. After the warrant was issued officers responded to his home, located in the 3600 block of Topeka St.,  and arrested him without incident. He was transported to the City Detention Center.

The suspect allegedly amputated one of his dog’s legs at home after it became infected from a previous injury.  The  five-year old eskimo mix-breed named  “Bugsey”  is recovering from treatment and has been transferred to the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

Animal Care Services will continue to work closely with Detectives regarding Animal Cruelty cases such as this one.

A 54 year old female called Corpus Christi Police after she found a cell phone recording in the restroom of a business located in the 11300 Leopard St. The female who is an employee at the business told officers that right before using the bathroom, she noticed a bundle of brown paper towels wedged under the sink against the drainage pipe. She said that she figured the drain was leaking water, so she removed the towels and noticed a black flip phone positioned facing the toilet. The phone displayed a light indicating that the recording device was on. The female left the phone in its position until police  arrived. Officers arrived and recovered the phone and are currently investigating this case.

Corpus Christi Police Officers responding to a call about a fight outside of an apartment in the 1800 block of Airline Road were flagged down by a 21 year old female victim who said she had been assaulted by a male and female. The victim stated she was outside attempting to get money from her vehicle when a male and a female approached her. The victim said that the male grabbed her by the neck and choked her, and also hit her several times in the head.  The male then went into his apartment and returned with a wood bat and struck her with the bat twice in the knees and once on the side of her body. The male then went into her vehicle and broke the rear view mirror and driver’s side windshield while the female suspect went through her belongings. The male took the bat back inside of an apartment and the female suspect pulled off the victim’s earrings and necklace. The male and female suspects were located and arrested by officers.  Larry Lee Haynes (08/19/1985) was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary to a vehicle.  Sheldon Allen (04/19/1985) was charged with aggravated assault, and at the City Detention Center she was found to have cocaine in her purse and she additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Offense:  Fraudulent Use Of Identifying Information (PC 32.51 State Jail Felony)

Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to 5142 Oakhurst St. the Sun Suites Hotel after a man was observed in the parking lot of the hotel asking people if they wanted to buy a laptop.  Officers found a female Sarah Grove (09/12/1979) at the hotel who was staying in the same room as the man who was trying to sell the laptop.  Officers discovered she had an outstanding warrant for arrest and took her into custody.  She told officers she was staying at the hotel with her brother and another female. Officers found several Texas drivers licenses, credit cards, and social security cards belonging to other people in her purse.  Hotel management escorted officers to the room and there a female, Lina Garza (04/15/1980), came to the door and officers also found Matthew Grove (05/15/1977) inside.  Both were wanted on outstanding arrest warrants and arrested.  Officers are still trying to determine how many identification cards and credit cards the female had in her possession that did not belong to her.    At this time, she is the only on facing fraudulent use of identifying information charges.

Two males that were fighting on the sidewalk in the 1000 block of Texas Ave. were both arrested, one for assault, the other for an outstanding arrest warrant. The two males were observed fighting and Adrian Reyes (07/27/1993) was on top of the other male punching him in the face.  The other male, Roy Anguiano (07/09/1991), had an outstanding warrant for arrest for failure to appear on a charge of possession of marijuana.   The warrant had a bond amount of $4,100.  Both were transported to the City Detention Center without incident.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer observed Holly Ann Bishop (10/28/1965) standing on Morgan Ave. under the Crosstown Freeway without any clothes on. The female was in full view of several people while she was naked. The officer allowed her to put her clothes back on and then arrested her for indecent exposure, a Class B misdemeanor.

Case Number: 1408280011
Corpus Christi Police Officers responding to a call about debris in the roadway in the 3900 block of Panama Drive found a generator in the road.   Officers were investigating how the generator got there when they were approached by a 32 year old male driving in the area with his brother in the passenger seat. The driver told officers that his brother came to his home and asked if he could take him to the hospital, because a generator had fallen on him and injured his foot.  The driver did not believe his brother so he asked him where it happened and he told him on Panama Dr. Officers told the driver that someone had stolen the generator out of a truck and could not carry it any further and dropped it in the middle of the road. The driver then turned toward his brother and stated “take him to jail”. Officers arrested the brother Louis Rosales (08/11/1987) and took him to Spohn Memorial Hospital for treatment of the injured foot that he sustained while removing the generator from the back of another truck and then to the City Detention Center, where he was charged with theft. The value of the generator was estimated to be $4,200 making this a State Jail Felony.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a business located in the 5600 block of Weber Road after a 52 year old female store clerk reported that a male had come in the store asking for money with a handgun in his waistband. The store clerk told officers she was behind the counter when a suspect wearing black told her to give him ten dollars out of the cash register. The clerk refused. The suspect continued to ask for money getting more demanding.  A customer in the store saw the suspect with his right hand on his hip covering the handle of what appeared to be a handgun. After the clerk continued to refuse to hand over any cash, the suspect left.  Nothing was taken, the handgun was never removed from the suspect’s waistband and no threats were ever verbalized.  Officers did not locate the suspect.

A 66 year old male victim called Corpus Christi Police and said that he was standing outside his home in the 1900 block of Comanche St. when he observed two passengers get out of a white four door vehicle and fire several rounds from a handgun and drive away west in the 1900 block of Comanche St. The victim reported that one of the bullets entered his home and struck the bedroom wall.  Officers found five shell casings outside on the sidewalk.  Officers are still investigating this case, and no suspects have been arrested.
