Police Officer Rescues 3 Year Old Girl

A Corpus Christi Police Officer was credited for saving the life of a 3-year-old girl Wednesday night on Ramsey Street.

A 47-year-old woman called for an ambulance for help with her 3-year-old daughter who was not breathing.  Corpus Christi Police Officers arrived at the home before an ambulance could arrive. The mother was outside the home and held her 3-year-old daughter. The 3-year-old turned colors because she could not breathe.

Senior Officer L. Rodriguez recognized the 3-year-old had an obstructed airway and performed the Heimlich Maneuver to remove the obstruction. The child no longer had difficulty breathing after the obstruction was removed.

The child was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a medical evaluation. The obstruction was an unspecified object, possibly part of a toy.

Mother Arrested in Death of 15-Month-Old Son

A 15-month-old boy died in a car seat after he was left unattended in a vehicle Wednesday afternoon on the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive.

A 26-year-old woman drove 7 children to a store Wednesday afternoon and returned to her home at the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive at 1:00pm. The 15-month-old was in the company of 6 other children that range in age between 3 years old to 7 years old. Four of the children belonged to the woman, including the 15-month-old child.

The 30-year-old father of the child arrived at the home at 3:45pm and inquired about his son. After searching for the child, they found him in their vehicle, still in his car seat and not responsive.

The child was immediately rushed to the Children’s Hospital; but the child died.

The child’s mother Concepcion Rodriguez (01/05/86) was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child, a 2nd Degree Felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. 

Corpus Christi Police urge parents and child caregivers to prevent hyperthermia in a few ways to avoid heat related injuries or death. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle and consistently leave all unattended vehicles locked. Create reminders and habits such as leave a purse, cell phone, or item you need at your next stop near the child. Finally, take action and call 911 immediately if you see an unattended child in a vehicle.

15 Month Old Dies When Left Unattended In Vehicle

A 15 month old boy died in a car seat after he was left unattended in a vehicle Wednesday afternoon on the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive.

A 26-year-old woman drove 7 children to a store Wednesday afternoon and returned to her home at the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive at 1:00pm. Not all the children are children of the 26-year-old woman; but, the 15 month old boy is the child of the woman.

The 30-year-old father of the 15 month old child arrived at the home at 3:45pm and inquired about the 15 month old boy. The woman said she forgot the child in the car. The child was still in his car seat and not responsive.

The child was immediately rushed to the Children’s Hospital; but the child died.

Corpus Christi Police are carefully investigating this event to evaluate if criminal charges are appropriate.  Child Protective Services are evaluating the circumstances to determine the appropriate placement of the other children.

Bleeding Stranger Found Passed Out on Hood of Car

Police received a call for a man passed out on the hood the complainant’s car.  Officers found the man had urinated on himself and bleeding from a wound to his lower back.  Erik DeAses became belligerent and argumentative; demanding to be left alone.  

After a short struggle DeAses was handcuffed allowing CCFD Emergency Personnel to medically evaluate him.  Once at Spohn Memorial for medical clearance, DeAses continued to be combative and spit out the window as he growled at people in the parking lot. 

While the Officer was working on his paperwork, DeAses spit at the Officer, striking him in the back of head and neck.  The suspect was asked to stop spitting, but he kept spitting until pepper sprayed. 

DeAses was booked at the City Detention Center and charged with Public Intoxication and Resisting Arrest.  He was additionally charged with and Harassment by Person in Correctional Facility which is a 3rd Felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Early Morning Shooting Leaves Two Hospitalized

Officer R. Vasquez was patrolling the area when he heard several shots being fired.  He found a large crowd in the parking lot of the Texas Star surrounding the victim who appeared to have shot in the chest.  Several vehicles were also seen speeding away. The 21-year-old victim was rushed to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel. 

While conducting the preliminary investigation, Officers were advised of a walk-in shooting victim at Spohn South.  The 21-year-old had also been at the Texas Star and suffered a gunshot to the abdomen. 

Further investigation revealed several women began to admire a customer’s vehicle when he stopped to gas up.  Several of the males became offended and an altercation ensued with the driver.  During the disagreement, the driver drew a firearm and shot at the men, striking two of the men.

 The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 6’ feet tall and weighing 230 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.  He fled in a silver 2011 or 2012 Dodge Challenger. 

As of this posting, the victims are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The investigation is ongoing and will be conducted by the Corpus Christi Police Department Homicide/Robbery Bureau.

Vehicle Catches Fire At City Impound Lot

A vehicle fire that happened Monday morning at the city impound lot has prompted an investigation as a possible arson.

Corpus Christi Police and Fire crews responded to the Corpus Christi city impound lot at 6:37am for a vehicle on fire. Several vehicles were damaged by the fire. Arson investigators were called to evaluate the damage once the fire was extinguished. No person was injured in the event.

The city impound lot is the holding area for seized vehicles. Vehicles are held in the impound lot for arrested persons until reclaimed by the owner, vehicles are stored at the impound lot as evidence, or nuisance vehicles are stored at the impound lot until auction.

The Corpus Christi City Impound lot has been open since March, 2012 funded by bond money from 2008. The impound lot has 11 paved acres, overhead lights, a chain link perimeter fence, and a controlled access gate. Corpus Christi Police impounded 6,579 vehicles in 2011 and average 500 to 600 vehicles towed to the impound lot each month.

Arson Investigators are currently investigating the burned vehicles to identify the cause of the fire and determine if the damage was a criminal act.

6-Month-Old Left in Car Unattended

Officers were dispatched to the H.E.B. parking lot for a child who was left unattended in a blue Chevrolet Cobalt.  Upon their arrival, Officers observed the infant slumped over the side of his rear facing car seat.  Officers report the child was drenched in sweat, but still breathing. 

As the Officer was checking the car doors, a witness and unknown male forced a cracked window down and unlocked the door.  The infant was taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital by CCFD Emergency Personnel.  At the time of the report, the 6-month-old was listed in stable condition. 

Officers paged the owner of the Cobalt and located the baby’s grandmother who was accompanied by her boyfriend and granddaughter.  The grandmother told Police she dropped off the baby’s mother at home and was unaware her grandchild was still in the car.   

The Criminal Investigation Division Detectives will coordinate their investigation with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, especially during the hot summer months.  The temperature in a vehicle can rise quickly and be deadly.   In the state of Texas criminal charges can be filed if you knowingly or intentionally left your child in your vehicle.  

According to the Texas Penal Code Sec. 22.10. LEAVING A CHILD IN A VEHICLE. (a) A person commits an offense if he intentionally or knowingly leaves a child in a motor vehicle for longer than five minutes, knowing that the child is:

(1) younger than seven years of age; and
(2) is not attended by an individual in the vehicle who is 14 years of age or older.
(b) An offense under this section is a Class “C” misdemeanor, but if the child is injured, the charge is elevated to child endangerment, which is a felony.

Robbery Victim Dies, Three Arrested

On 8/6/12, at approximately 8:59 p.m. police were called to Spohn Shoreline for an assault victim and contacted the victim’s son who reported his father had been brought to the hospital on Friday and admitted as a “John Doe.”

Further investigation revealed the victim had been brought to the hospital by CCFD Emergency Personnel who responded to a “man down” call at Horne and Shaw.  The victim did not have visible injuries at the time, but was unconscious.

Corpus Christi Homicide/Robbery Detectives received information that on August 2nd, the victim had been involved in a verbal altercation with several individuals over a debt owed by a roommate. During the confrontation the victim was knocked unconscious and robbed.  The suspects who included two males and a pregnant female left in a black four-door vehicle with a spoiler.

During their investigation, Detectives discovered Police were called to the residence at 4100 Shaw on August 2nd, but the victim did not want to file a police report, refusing to cooperate with Officers.  The roommate told Detectives the victim left the residence on Friday, August 3rd and did not return. 

Detectives’ continued their investigation and were able to identify the suspects.  Detective R. Lee obtained warrants for Gabriel Grande Jr. (02/24/93) and Alfonso Garcia (08/20/59) for Aggravated Robbery.  Each warrant had a bond of $150,000.  Detective Lee also obtained a warrant for Grande’s pregnant girlfriend, Jazmyn Monique De Los Santos (04/14/93) for Aggravated Robbery.

Grande was arrested on August 9th at 1701 Yale Street and charged with the outstanding Aggravated Robbery warrant by Senior Officers J. Vela and H. Corona.  Senior Officer J. Vela arrested Garcia about forty minutes later in the 1700 block of Yale Street.  He was charged with the outstanding Aggravated Robbery warrant.  Senior Officer H. Corona and D. Gipson arrested De Los Santos on August 14th at 1701 Yale Street and booked at the City Detention Center on the outstanding Aggravated Robbery warrant.

The 59-year-old victim died on August 8th and the investigation is ongoing pending the Nueces County Medical Examiner’s ruling.

“Kimbo” Sniffs Out Marijuana

Senior Officer L. Preiss pulled over a gold Honda Civic when it failed to completely stop for a Stop Sign.  Preiss contacted the driver Juan Flores (07/25/90) while back up Officers contacted the passenger.  Officer Preiss deployed his canine partner “Kimbo” who alerted to the Marijuana in the center console. 

Flores was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana and Driving With License Suspended or Invalid.   He was also cited for No Driver’s License, Failure to Maintain Insurance, and an expired Motor Vehicle Registration.  Flores’ vehicle was also impounded.

The passenger was released at the scene.

Two Apprehended For Throwing Rocks At Police Car

A 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old man were apprehended by police at 4:00am Sunday morning at an apartment complex near Everhart Road and Saratoga Boulevard for throwing rocks at a passing police patrol car.

Two officers rode together in the same patrol car when rocks struck the car and caused $350 worth of damage to the windshield. The officers stopped and found piles of rocks at the golf course adjacent to the road. The officers saw foot prints through the dew on the grass. The officers followed the footprints and then saw two people jump the fence into the Fairway Apartments. The officers demanded the two people stop, but the two disobeyed the command and officers had to chase the two through the apartment complex.

The officers apprehended the two after a short chase. Police apprehended a 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old man. The 14-year-old boy was issued a citation for violation of night curfew and delivered to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center for Criminal Mischief and Evading Arrest. The 17-year-old man, Israel Olbera (12/6/1994) was issued a citation for inducing curfew and then delivered to the city detention center for Criminal Mischief and Evading Arrest.
