Woman Fatally Injured In Parking Lot Crash

A 45-year-old woman was fatally injured after she fell out of a vehicle Sunday morning in a shopping center parking lot at the 1800 block of South Padre Island Drive.

A 46-year-old man drove a blue 1978 Chevy van with the 45-year-old woman inside. The 45-year-old woman fell out of the vehicle and was run over by the same van from which she was a passenger. An ambulance rushed the 45-year-old woman to the hospital; but, the woman did not survive the injuries.

Corpus Christi Police Crash investigators took the van to the city impound and the 46-year-old man was questioned by investigators.

No arrests or formal charges have been applied and the investigation is not complete. Investigators continue to gather evidence and information about this event.

Corpus Christi Police urge safe practices such as the use of seatbelts and avoidance of distracted driving to reduce the risk of injury.

Help Needed Identifying LJ Minimart Burglar

Corpus Christi Police Department Property Crimes Detectives are asking the public’s assistance identifying the burglar who broke into the LJ Minimart.  Surveillance video showed a male enter the business early Sunday morning and take a box of cigars along with two bank bags containing an undetermined amount of money.

Female Hides Purse to Conceal True Identity during Traffic Stop, Two Jailed

Officers in the 4600 block of Everhart pulled over a truck that was swerving erratically almost striking a black BMW.  The driver Samuel Handy (07/12/50) was found to be wanted and driving with an expired driver’s license.  Not believing the truth would come out, the female passenger lied to Officers about her identity, but forgot her correct date of birth with her chosen alias. 

Further investigation revealed Carolina Castillo (04/07/79) had concealed her purse in the vehicle to keep Officers from finding her identification card. Both Handy and Castillo were arrested and booked at the City Detention Center. 

Handy was charged with Driving While License Suspended/Invalid, Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility, and the outstanding Municipal Court warrant for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility in the amount of $109.  His vehicle was also impounded.

Castillo was charged an outstanding San Patricio County warrant for Probation Violation for Possession of Dangerous Drugs and Possession of Methamphetamine, and Failure to Identify as a Fugitive.  She was additionally charged with Possession Controlled Substance, Possession of Dangerous Drugs, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after a variety of pills and drug paraphernalia were also found in her purse.

Police Search For Man Who Robbed Bank On Gollihar

Corpus Christi Police searched for a man who robbed a local bank Monday afternoon at the intersection of Gollihar Road and Vestal Street.

A man entered the bank located at 2140 Gollihar Road and presented the teller with a hand written note that demanded money. No weapon was displayed and no person was injured. The man took money from the bank and was last seen on foot walking north on Vestal Street from the bank.

Corpus Christi Police Robbery detectives would like help from the public to provide additional information about this crime. The man who robbed the bank is described as a black male that was about 6 foot 2 inches tall, about 220 pounds, and he was in his late 30’s in age. The man had a goatee and wore a black t-shirt that had white letters, and he wore a black cap, black denim shorts and black shoes.

One Brother Arrested, while Another Brother Hospitalized

An Officer contacted an elderly female who wanted to report her daughter’s vehicle stolen.  A B.O.L.O.(Be On the Look Out) was issued for the Ford Explorer, shortly thereafter, the original investigating Officer observed the vehicle and attempted to pull it over as it traveled southbound on Port. 

The 27-year-old female driver didn’t pull over and exchanged places with the backseat passenger Gilbert Colunga (03/13/85) who then fled from police.  A pursuit ensued in which Colunga who was traveling east on Alexander left the roadway and drove onto Fannin Elementary School’s playground where it struck the barrier around the swing set causing the SUV to roll over. 

The driver and another male passenger began to exit the vehicle through the driver’s side windows as the SUV landed on its wheels.  Colunga took off running leaving his 27-year-old ex-girlfriend and his brother behind.  Colunga’s 25-year-old brother’s injuries included a broken leg and possibly a dislocated shoulder.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel.

Colunga was charged with Evading Arrest involving Serious Bodily Injury, Evading Arrest on Foot, and an outstanding Nueces County warrant for Driving While Intoxicated issued on 4/26/12.  There was a 10,000 bond on the outstanding warrant.

 

 

Juvenile Charged with Two Counts of Graffiti

Officer B. Gaines observed several youths gathered at the 1400 block of Acapulco, three of which he dealt on drug and graffiti related offenses.  The Officer contacted a 13-year-old who he’d issued a curfew citation to the night before and took him home. 

The mother asked for the Officer’s assistance with the teenager as he was sneaking out and vandalizing their home with graffiti.  While the Officer was talking to the mother, the 13-year-old ran out of the home and jumped onto the roof of the garage in attempt to hide from the Officer. 

The teen’s father found him and he was taken into custody.  Further investigation revealed, the juvenile had not only tagged his parent’s home, but several stop signs, no parking signs, an electrical box and outlet belonging to the City of Corpus Christi along with two signs belonging to Champion Hyundai.  The juvenile also tagged several fences belonging to elderly residents living in the Sacky area. 

The  juvenile was booked at the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center and charged with two counts of Graffiti. The total estimated vandalism was valued at $1,700.

Stand-Off Ends Peacefully

Shortly before noon, the Police Department received information about a female possibly being held hostage.  Officers arrived to find the victim outside, but she denied being threatened, assaulted, or held hostage. 

While Officers were talking to the female, her 21-year-old boyfriend threatened to harm himself and locked himself inside the apartment.  Officers on scene requested the assistance of the SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Teams who were able to persuade the male to walk out of the apartment and surrender to Officers.  The male who was unharmed was taken to Spohn Memorial for medical evaluation.

As a precaution, several residents of the Christy Wood Apartments were evacuated, but allowed to return home shortly after the stand-off ended.

Security Officer Injured When Woman Steals A Hat

A 35-year-old woman was arrested for robbery Friday after she was accused of stealing a cap from Dillard’s and then striking a security guard with a vehicle.

A 21-year-old Security guard confronted 35-year-old Loretta Ramsey (11/18/1976) after Ramsey left the Dillard’s store without paying for a cap. Ramsey got into a white 2009 Pontiac Vibe and left the parking lot but ran over the security guards foot.  The Security Officer suffered minor injuries.

Corpus Christi Police were called to investigate and were provided the license plate number for the white Pontiac. One of the responding patrol officers recognized the name of the registered owner and knew the owner resided at a different address than the registered address for the vehicle. The patrol officer located Ramsey and collected the evidence of Ramsey’s involvement of the crime. Because of the use of force in this theft, Ramsey was arrested for Robbery which is a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Male Stabbed in Front of His Residence, Refuses to Tell Police Details of Attack

Multiple Officers were sent to Paradise Bay Apartment looking for a male bleeding near one of the buildings.  Officers found a 31-year-old male on a lawn chair with trying to stop the flow of blood from a stab wound to his torso.   The victim was quickly taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel for medical treatment.

Suspect Arrested in Mall Shooting

Jimmy Salinas

Corpus Christi Police Department Homicide/Robbery Detectives along with the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force served an arrest warrant for Jimmy Salinas (04/12/77) at his residence, 5721 Crestwood.

Homicide/Robbery Detective R. Torres was able to obtain an arrest warrant for Salinas who was involved in the April 19th shooting of a 34-year-old female at the JC Penny’s  parking lot.  The victim and Salinas’ girlfriend were involved in a “feud fight” when he was ordered by his girlfriend to shoot at the victim.  Salinas fired several gunshots at the victim, missing her, but striking her vehicle. 

Upon serving the arrest warrant, Salinas attempted to flee out the back door of his residence, but ran back inside when he observed Officers waiting for him.  Salinas was pursued and quickly apprehended.

He was charged with the outstanding warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Unlawful Possession of Body Armor by a Felon.
