A Metro Self Storage employee reported to police she was robbed by a White male with curly red hair.  She told Officers she had just opened the office when she was approached by the man who displayed a handgun and demanded her purse.  The victim complied with his demand and he fled northbound on Villa Drive.   The clerk was uninjured in the robbery.

The suspect is described as a White male, 19 to 20 years of age, 5’6” to 5’7” feet tall and weighing 120 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a dark-colored shirt and plaid shorts.   Anyone with any information on this crime is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS or submit a tip online at www.888-TIPS.com.  Callers will earn a cash reward if the suspect is arrested.

15 Month Old Dies When Left Unattended In Vehicle

A 15 month old boy died in a car seat after he was left unattended in a vehicle Wednesday afternoon on the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive.

A 26-year-old woman drove 7 children to a store Wednesday afternoon and returned to her home at the 3700 block of Grassmere Drive at 1:00pm. The 15 month old was in the company of 6 other children that range in age between 3 years old to 7 years old. Not all the children are children of the 26-year-old woman; but, the 15 month old boy is the child of the woman.

The 30-year-old father of the 15 month old child arrived at the home at 3:45pm and inquired about the 15 month old boy. The woman said she forgot the child in the car. The child was still in his car seat and not responsive.

The child was immediately rushed to the Children’s Hospital; but the child died.

Corpus Christi Police are carefully investigating this event to evaluate if criminal charges are appropriate.  Child Protective Services are evaluating the circumstances to determine the appropriate placement of the other children.

Corpus Christi Police urge parents and child caregivers to prevent hyperthermia in a few ways to avoid heat related injuries or death. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle and consistently leave all unattended vehicles locked. Create reminders and habits such as leave a purse, cell phone, or item you need at your next stop near the child. Finally, take action and call 911 immediately if you see an unattended child in a vehicle.

Suspect Arrested in Double Shooting

Detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Homicide/Robbery Bureau were able to positive identify the suspect in Sunday’s early morning shooting.

A warrant was obtained on August 22, 2012, for Jose Luis Flores Jr. (09/23/84) for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  At approximately 3:15 pm, Corpus Christi Police Officers and the Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force were able to locate him in the 2000 block of 17th Street.

Flores was arrested and charged with the outstanding warrant.  He was booked at the City Detention Center and his bond was set at $150,000.

Early Morning Shooting Leaves Two Hospitalized

Occurred on 8/21/12, 02:48 a.m.  Aggravated Assault      5638 Weber         1208210014 

Officer R. Vasquez was patrolling the area when he heard several shots being fired.  He found a large crowd in the parking lot of the Texas Star surrounding the victim who appeared to have shot in the chest.  Several vehicles were also seen speeding away. The 21-year-old victim was rushed to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel. 

While conducting the preliminary investigation, Officers were advised of a walk-in shooting victim at Spohn South.  The 21-year-old had also been at the Texas Star and suffered a gunshot to the abdomen. 

Further investigation revealed several women began to admire a customer’s vehicle when he stopped to gas up.  Several of the males became offended and an altercation ensued with the driver.  During the disagreement, the driver drew a firearm and shot at the men, striking two of the men.

 The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 6’ feet tall and weighing 230 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.  He fled in a silver 2011 or 2012 Dodge Challenger. 

As of this posting, the victims are being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The investigation is ongoing and will be conducted by the Corpus Christi Police Department Homicide/Robbery Bureau.

Vehicle Catches Fire At City Impound Lot

A vehicle fire that happened Monday morning at the city impound lot has prompted an investigation as a possible arson.

Corpus Christi Police and Fire crews responded to the Corpus Christi city impound lot at 6:37am for a vehicle on fire. Several vehicles were damaged by the fire. Arson investigators were called to evaluate the damage once the fire was extinguished. No person was injured in the event.

The city impound lot is the holding area for seized vehicles. Vehicles are held in the impound lot for arrested persons until reclaimed by the owner, vehicles are stored at the impound lot as evidence, or nuisance vehicles are stored at the impound lot until auction.

The Corpus Christi City Impound lot has been open since March, 2012 funded by bond money from 2008. The impound lot has 11 paved acres, overhead lights, a chain link perimeter fence, and a controlled access gate. Corpus Christi Police impounded 6,579 vehicles in 2011 and average 500 to 600 vehicles towed to the impound lot each month.

Arson Investigators are currently investigating the burned vehicles to identify the cause of the fire and determine if the damage was a criminal act.

46-Year-Old Man Seriously Injured in Assault

Police were dispatched to Mulligan’s Pub for a fight with injuries.  Officers arrived to find the 46-year-old unconscious victim lying in the street.    Further investigation revealed the victim and several friends were walking to Mulligan’s Pub from the House of Rock when a Black male followed them.  The man punched the victim who fell back and struck his head on the street. 

A friend was checking on the victim’s welfare when he also was assaulted by the suspect who began punching him in face and sprayed mace in his face before fleeing.  The suspect was accompanied by two White males and they fled in a blue passenger car.

The suspect is described as a Black male known as “Ace” who is 5’8″ feet tall and weighing 170 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and blue jeans.

Police Seek Thief In Scrubs

The Corpus Christi Police Property Crimes Investigators would like help from the public to identify and locate the individual responsible for a theft at the Wal-Mart in Flour Bluff on July 28.

A man was captured on security cameras as he entered the store. The man got a plastic storage container,placed pillows in the container, then filled the container with electronics and left the store without paying for the merchandise. The total value of the items stolen was $1,091.

Corpus Christi Police Investigators believe this individual has conducted several thefts in this manner. The man is described as a man who wears scrubs each time he commits theft, 25-35 years of age, 5 foot 8 inches tall about 185 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. The man got into a silver 4 door Cadillac that waited for him with an accomplice that operated the car.

Police Disrupt Auto Theft Group

A 31-year-old man was arrested when he was found in a vehicle stolen from a car lot on the 4300 block of South Staples Street Wednesday morning.

Corpus Christi police were called by the manager of a car dealership on the 4300 block of Staples Street Wednesday morning to report a blue 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 truck valued at $15,000 stolen from the lot. Corpus Christi Police Officers searched the area and found the truck at an apartment complex located at the 400 block of Eldon Drive.

Detectives from the Corpus Christi Police Auto Theft Task Force watched the truck until the truck was driven away. The Detectives requested Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officers to initiate a traffic stop on the truck. The truck travelled to South Padre Island Drive and then turned into the parking lot of a business at the 4500 block of South Padre Island Drive just as Police Patrol cars arrived to attempt to initiate the traffic stop.

The operator of the truck got onto a bicycle that was in the bed of the truck and attempted to flee from police on the bike. Corpus Christi Police captured 31-year-old George Ortiz (5/21/1981) and arrested him for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and Evading Arrest.

Corpus Christi Police Auto Theft Task Force Detectives identified Ortiz as part of a group of individuals responsible for 5 stolen trucks from dealerships in Corpus Christi since the beginning of June 2012. The 5 trucks are all Dodge Ram pickups and are taken with the intent to disassemble the vehicles for parts, or be sold in Mexico. Detectives continue to investigate this case and more arrests may result. Detectives encourage anyone with additional information about these crimes to call Detectives with the Auto Theft Task Force at 886-2862. Anyone with any information should not assume police have the information, and provide the information without delay.

The Corpus Christi Police Auto Theft Task Force Detectives encourage the public to be aware of a few no-cost precautions to avoid vehicle theft. One tip is to take your keys. Half of all vehicles stolen in Texas (roughly 50,000 annually) are the result of keys left in the ignition.

A second tip is to lock the doors. Half of all stolen vehicles were left unlocked. Park in well-lit areas and don’t tempt thieves by leaving valuables in sight.

Report any vehicle theft to the police immediately if your vehicle has been stolen. Be ready to provide the vehicle year, make, model, color, Vehicle Identification Number, and the license plate number to increase your chances for recovery.
