Men With Guns Attract Police To Find Drugs

Occurred Thursday, June 5, 2012, 17:15, 4014 Holly Road, Felon In Possession of a Firearm, 1207050146

Traffic was disrupted for two hours Thursday evening in the area of Holly and Weber while Corpus Christi Police investigated suspicious men that were said to have assault rifles, but who turned out to have illegal narcotics.

Corpus Christi Police were called to the Montego Harbor Apartments located at 4014 Holly Road to investigate men who carried assault rifles from a car to an apartment. Patrol officers found men outside the apartment, and one, Jonathan Sanchez (8/9/1988) had a handgun in his waistband. Officers also found discarded narcotics at the place the men stood.

One of the three men had a baby in his arms. A woman came out of the apartment to take the baby from the man. The door to the apartment closed and the deadbolt locked which alerted Officers that there were more people in the apartment. Officers detained all persons outside the apartment and went to the patrol cars because the original call was a complaint that there were assault rifles carried into the apartment.

A Corpus Christi Police negotiator called the men in the apartment by phone and spoke to a man. The man claimed he wanted to exit the apartment, but was unable because a second person in the apartment would not allow the first man to leave. The Corpus Christi Police patrol officers then evacuated nearby apartments and closed off the streets near the apartment. The streets closed at 6:30pm. Negotiators talked with the second man in the apartment until two men exited the apartment peaceably and unharmed.

The Corpus Christi S.W.A.T. team entered the apartment to search for any other person in the apartment. The team did not find any person inside, but did find marijuana in plain view. The team exited the apartment and reported the contraband. The Corpus Christi Narcotics Vice Investigations Division then gathered the information needed to obtain a search warrant for the apartment.

Sanchez was arrested for Unlawful possession of a Firearm by a Felon, a third degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

The streets were opened to normal traffic and the residents were allowed back to neighboring apartments at 8:30pm. No injuries were reported.

The status of the others involved was not available at the time of this report. At the time of this report, no other information was available about the warrant service or contraband.
