Vehicle Crashes Delay Commute on Freeway Thursday Evening

Crashes on the freeway near Weber Road that involved 11 vehicles tied up rush hour traffic Thursday evening.

Three crashes happened at 4:45pm on State Highway 358 near Weber Road and fortunately, no injuries were reported. The first crash involved five vehicles. A 41-year-old man drove a white 1995 Ford F-250 with a green trailer east on State Highway 358. The traffic slowed and the truck struck a tan 2002 Lincoln Towncar driven by a 70-year-old woman. The Lincoln then struck a black 2008 Mazda, and then a blue 2013 Hyundai Accent. The 41-year-old man received a citation for failing to control speed.

The second crash happened as a 40-year-old woman stopped her gray 1993 Chevy Suburban to avoid a collision with the first vehicle crash which happened in front of her. An unknown vehicle struck the Suburban and then left the scene. Police are now looking for any information about the vehicle that struck the Suburban and a Hit & Run investigation has begun for that second crash.

The third vehicle crash happened as a 46-year-old man stopped his black 2010 Mazda for the stopped traffic for the previous two crashes. The Mazda was struck from behind by a white 1999 Ford E-150 van driven by a 61-year-old man. The Mazda then struck a black GMC Sierra and then a red 2007 Ford F-150. The 61-year-old man received a citation for failing to control speed, expired vehicle registration, driving with an expired driver license, and for no insurance.

The freeway was re-opened for normal use a little after 6:00pm.

Police to Close Oso Bridge on Sunday

State Highway 358 over the Oso Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 6:15am. The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section will take measurements to reconstruct a vehicle crash and need the roadway closed to safely perform the duty.

The westbound lanes (to travel away from Flour Bluff) of the bridge will be closed for about two hours. The eastbound lanes (to travel into Flour Bluff) will be closed after the westbound lanes are reopened. The closure on the eastbound lanes is expected to last about one hour.

Anyone traveling into Flour Bluff or to Padre Island may take Yorktown to navigate to their destination. The public is urged to watch for workers in the area and the Police Department thanks everyone for their patience.

Police Close Bridge To Investigate Crash With Multiple Fatalities

The Oso Bridge on the 8800 block of South Padre Island Drive was closed for several hours Monday night while the Corpus Christi Police Department worked a major vehicle crash with multiple fatal injuries.

Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to the crash at 9:15pm and found several vehicles obstructing traffic on the westbound lanes of the bridge. The westbound lanes of traffic were closed to traffic and the eastbound lanes were reduced to one lane of travel because debris spread on both sides of the freeway.

Emergency Crews discovered a 27-year-old man and a 20-year-old man did not survive the crash. Several other people were taken to the hospital by ambulance to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section evaluated the scene to take measurements and determine the sequence of events. The crash involved a gold 2000 Chevy 1500 truck, a white 2012 Chevy 3500 four door truck, a red 2004 Isuzu Rodeo carry-all, and a green 2001 Volvo S80.

The Oso Bridge was closed completely at 12:13am so that the Traffic Safety Section could safely evaluate and measure the crash scene. The roadway was re-opened to normal use at 2:34am.

No conclusions about the cause of the crash have yet been determined, but speed is believed to have been a contributing factor. Crash Investigators also believe alcohol was involved and continue to investigate any possible application of criminal charges related to this vehicle crash.

Anyone who saw or has any additional information about this crash should call the Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section at 886-2688. Information may be provided to crash investigators anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS (8477) or online at
