On New Year’s Day, civilians and Corpus Christi Police officers worked together to rescue a 70-year-old male from a burning vehicle.  His vehicle was struck by a vehicle traveling the wrong way on SH 358 and had flipped onto its side.

The efforts from the officers and civilians are commended for saving the life of the 70-year-old male, who is believed would not have survived without their heroic efforts.

Two suspects entered a convenience store located on the 2900 block of Norton St. One suspect placed an item on the counter top as if he were going to make a purchase and then both suspects pointed handguns at the employees inside the store, while demanding the money from the register.

Both males are described as Hispanic males, between the ages of 16-20 years of age.

At approximately 04:29 AM on Monday, November 26, 2018, officers were dispatched to the 5200 block of Ayers for a Burglary in Progress.  As officers arrived on scene, they observed a vehicle that returned as stolen leaving the parking lot.  The responding officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop which resulted in a short vehicle pursuit and ultimately ended with the suspect vehicle crashing into a fence where it became lodged. Officers exited their vehicles in an effort to make contact with the offenders and were standing to the rear of the suspect vehicle, when the driver placed the vehicle in reverse and accelerated to the point where the vehicle dislodged from the fence.  The driver continued to reverse at an accelerated pace in what was perceived as an attempt to run over officers on scene.  The driver struck a marked Corpus Christi Police Unit and nearly struck several uniformed police officers.  Fearing for his life and for the lives of the officers in the path of the vehicle, which was being used as a weapon, a Corpus Christi Police Officer discharged his city issued weapon to stop the threat.

The driver and passenger then exited the vehicle and fled on foot as officers gave chase. The suspects were able to elude the officers and no one has been taken into custody related to this incident.

One Corpus Christi Police Officer has been placed on paid administrative leave at this time in accordance with department practice and policy.

On Sunday, November 13, 2016, nineteen-year-old Colton Cavazos was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Marbella Apartments at 5900 Weber Road at 11:58pm. Police have obtained images of a vehicle that was on the scene before the shooting, the driver is considered a person of interest.

An anti-prostitution sting conducted by the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Narcotics and Vice Investigations Division Thursday afternoon resulted in the arrest of eight women on charges of prostitution, a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and fines up to $2,000.  The ninth suspect was charged with Felony prostitution, due to previous convictions.  The women were arrested after they solicited an undercover CCPD Officer for sex acts in exchange for money.  The operation targeted several north and west side neighborhoods frequented by prostitutes.

NVID Detectives were assisted in the operation by Directed Patrol and Uniform Division Bike Officers, as well as civilians with the Red Cord Program.  The Red Cord Initiative is a prostitution diversion program aimed to provide practical and emotional support for those involved in prostitution. The program is successful due to the collaboration between the Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation, social service organizations, the Nueces County District Attorney Office, and the Corpus Christi Police Department.  The program affords those involved with sex work an opportunity to address the myriad of behavioral, social, and psychological problems they have faced throughout their lifetime. Since 2013, Red Cord has provided case management, health services, job training, substance abuse treatment, clothing, housing, counseling, and other social services needed to address the circumstances related to their involvement in prostitution.  Participants who successfully complete the program have their cases dismissed by the District Attorney’s Office.

Three of the nine women arrested during Thursday’s operation agreed to participate and were accepted into the program.  Since its inception in 2013, 204 men and women have been arrested for prostitution during these operations, 99 have qualified for the program, 59 agreed, and 15 have graduated from the program.  The Red Cord initiative receives no government funding and is supported entirely through donations.  To learn more, volunteer or donate, citizens can visit the Coastal Bend Wellness foundation at http://www.cbwellness.org.

Although often inaccurately referred to as a “victimless” crime, prostitution is inextricably linked to multiple other crimes including assault, human trafficking, sexual abuse, drug abuse, and the spread of sexually transmitted infectious disease.  Neighborhoods where prostitution is prevalent experience a drastic degradation of the quality of life that citizens expect and deserve.  The Corpus Christi Police Department will continue to collaborate with all government and private entities to combat prostitution and help accomplish our mission of working with the community to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime and enhance public safety.
