Crash Investigators Respond to Two Major Crashes

Officers were called and responded for a Crash Follow-up at 0235hrs. The investigation indicated that it was a single vehicle, single occupant crash. The vehicle, driven by a 33 year old male, was west bound at a high rate of speed in the left lane. It appears that the driver over-corrected the 1998 Pontiac which then traveled about 300′, jumping the left curb, running through bushes and impacting a concrete pillar. The inertia wedged the car between the pillar and a retaining wall.

The driver did not survive his injuries.

Crash Investigators received a call for follow-up in the 4300 blk. of S. Alameda. Upon arriving it was found that a motorcycle being driven by 49 year old male, was east bound on Alameda when a car being driven by a 66 year old male, made an unsafe turn in front of him. The motorcycle struck the back of the vehicle and the rider was thrown to the roadway. He was not wearing a helmet and struck his head on the pavement. He sustained major head trauma and was transported to Spohn Memorial for treatment. As of this writing, the rider was in critical condition.

There were no indications that alcohol was a factor.

NathanGarciaPolice responded to a disturbance and arrested Nathan Garcia (09/20/85) who was found to have a couple of smoking pipes, several baggies of Methamphetamine, and Hydrocodone pills not prescribed to him.

Garcia was charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He was additionally charged with an outstanding Municipal Court warrant for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in the amount of $323.10.

Police and Fire were called to the area of Everhart and Donegal for a major accident involving a motorcyclist.  The 55-year-old driver of a white Toyota Sequoia who was northbound on Everhart turned left and struck a green Kawasaki motorcycle which was traveling southbound.

The 25-year-old motorcyclist was rushed to Spohn Memorial with multiple fractures and a head injury.  At last report, he was listed as being in Critical Condition.  The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Police Department’s Traffic & Safety Division.

Event:  Abandoning/Endangering a Child

Officers were called to the shopping center parking lot for a one-year-old left inside a vehicle.  The child had been left in her car seat, while her 33-year-old mother did her grocery shopping.  The child was discovered by the mother and a store employee who was helping her load the groceries inside the vehicle.  The child accompanied by her mother was taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.  The child was treated and released into her mother’s care.

Detectives with the Police Department’s Child Protection Unit are carefully investigating this incident to evaluate if criminal charges are appropriate. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services have been notified and will conduct their own investigation.  Once the investigation is complete it will be presented to the Nueces County District Attorney’s Office.

Corpus Christi Police urge parents and child caregivers to prevent hyperthermia in a few ways to avoid heat related injuries or death. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle and consistently leave all unattended vehicles locked. Create reminders and habits such as leaving a purse, cell phone, or item you need at your next stop near the child. You can also leave your child’s favorite toy or a bottle on the passenger front seat as a visual reminder.  Finally, take action and call 911 immediately if you see an unattended child in a vehicle.

A 37-year-old woman told Officers she was robbed as she stopped at a local convenience to gas up her vehicle.  The woman was approached by a man who offered to pump the gas.  When the victim declined her offer, he grabbed the money she had in her hand.  The suspect began assaulting the victim, punching her several times in the upper body.  The woman fought back and the suspect fled.  The woman sustained several minor lacerations to her hands, but refused medical treatment.

The suspect is identified as a shaggy-haired Hispanic man, standing 5’6” to 5’8” feet tall, and weighing 130 to 150 lbs.  He was accompanied by a Hispanic man, 5’0 to 5’2” feet tall, and weighing 100 to 130 lbs.  Both men fled in a maroon Ford Crown Victoria.

Hit and Run Investigators Need Help to Identify Drivers of Two Vehicles

The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section is asking for Media and community assistance to help identify responsible for a Hit and Run crash on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at approximately 3:23pm.

A 34-year-old man jogged in the bicycle lane on 3200 block of Ocean Drive near Hewit Drive when he was hit by a vehicle and injured. The vehicle left without providing any information or aid to the 34-year-old man as required by law. The man was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The Police Department’s Hit and Run Investigators have released this video footage and photos of two vehicles they believe to be possibly involved or have additional information on the hit and run.   Investigators are now searching for a light-colored, possibly white, Sport Utility Vehicle or a light-colored passenger vehicle.

Police contacted a 21-year-old man who reported being robbed at knifepoint.  The victim told police he was in the apartment complex parking lot when a gray Ford pick-up truck pulled up next to him.  Two women, the driver and front passenger asked for directions.  A man exited the truck and pointed a knife at him, asking for his belongings.  The victim gave the suspect a pack of cigarettes and the trio left in the truck.  The victim was uninjured during the robbery.

The women are described as Hispanic females and weighing 200 to 230 lbs.  The male suspect is described only as a Hispanic male.  The truck is described as a gray Ford F-150 pick-up truck.

Local Responders Attend Homeland Security Training

FEMA training july 2013

MetroComm employees with the Corpus Christi Police Department attended Homeland Security Training, July 14-19, 2013.  Supervisor Kristen Heslip, Laura Ochoa, Samantha Ramirez, and Roxana Steward received Technical Emergency Response Training for CBRNE Incidents.

This training, offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, AL.  The CDP is operated by the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) training facility in the nation.

The CDP develops and delivers advanced training for emergency response providers, emergency managers, and other government officials from state, local, and tribal governments.  The CDP offers more than 40 training courses focusing on  incident management, mass casualty response, and emergency response to a catastrophic natural disaster or terrorist act.  Training at the CDP campus is federally funded at no cost to state, local, and tribal emergency response professionals or their agency.

Resident training at the CDP includes healthcare and public health courses at the Noble Training Facility, the nation’s only hospital dedicated to training healthcare professionals in disaster preparedness and response.

A number of resident training courses culminate at the CDP’s Chemical, Ordnance, Biological and Radiological (COBRA) Training Facility.  The COBRA Training Facility is the nation’s only facility featuring civilian training exercises in a true toxic environment using chemical agents.  The advanced hands-on training enables responders to effectively prevent, respond to, and recover from real-world incidents involving acts of terrorism and other hazardous materials.

Responders participating in CDP training gain critical skills and confidence to respond effectively to local incidents or potential WMD events.

Targeted Education Initiative

City of Corpus Christi, Animal Care Services is dedicated to proactive change in our community.  It is our goal to achieve a humane community status through the following outreach methods.

As part of this five-part initiative, the Corpus Christi Animal Care Services began “sweeping” Cheyenne Street this morning at 8:00am.  Animal Control Officers patrolled the neighborhood, went door-to-door and made contact with several residents in an effort to enforce city ordinances and educate the public.

Animal Control Officers captured four (4) stray dogs on Cheyenne and issued one (1) citation. Officers ensured that animals were current on vaccinations and city registration. While making contact with residents, Officers were informed of other residents and addresses that needed attention for possible ordinance violations.

Corpus Christi Animal Care Services will continue sweeps on Cheyenne Street on Tuesday 07/24/2013 starting at 8:00am.

BrianShawnPoggemillerPolice were called to the area for a very intoxicated man.  Officers found Brian Shawn Poggemiller (05/10/68) sitting in a Chevrolet pick-up truck.    Poggemiller was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication.  He was also charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle when the truck was discovered to be stolen out of Enid, Oklahoma.  He was additionally charged with an outstanding Probation Violation for Possession of Marijuana out of Caldwell County.  Poggemiller’s dog was also detained and turned over to Animal Care Services.

RichardRiojasPolice were called to the residence for a disturbance involving two neighbors.  Officers arrived to find a 55-year-old man had been assaulted by his 46-year-old neighbor.  The two men had been involved in an ongoing confrontation for the past couple of days.  It is unknown why the men were arguing, but the quarreling escalated when Richard Riojas (07/22/67) threw a brick at his neighbor.  The brick was thrown from Riojas yard and struck the victim on the back causing it to break in half.  The victim refused medical treatment.

Riojas was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  He was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and an outstanding warrant.  Riojas was additionally charged with Failure to Identify as a Fugitive when he refused to identify himself.

Police Seek S.U.V. In Hit & Run Crash

The Corpus Christi Police Traffic Safety Section would like help from the public to identify and locate the person responsible for a hit and run crash on the 3200 block of Ocean Drive at 3:20pm on Saturday, July 20, 2013.
