Police Take Man From Trash Can to Jail

                A 35-year-old man was arrested after he ran from Corpus Christi Police Officers on the 5900 block of Norvel Drive near Cullen Park Monday morning.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call for a man sleeping on the sidewalk at Norvel Drive and Belmeade Drive at 8:35am. A patrol officer woke 35-year-old Rocky Cooper (5/20/1977) and asked for identification. Cooper then reached for a bag, then pushed the officer and ran.

The officer chased Cooper until Cooper ran behind a house. The officer then found Cooper hidden in a recycle bin and Cooper refused to get out of the container. Cooper was exposed to the Electronic Control Device and then was placed in handcuffs.

Cooper had a warrant for his arrest and he was additionally charged with evading arrest. Cooper was then delivered to the city detention center.

City Road Closures February 1-8, 2013

Chaparral Street and Schatzell Street Intersection

Monday – Friday

Schatzell Street:  From Shoreline Boulevard, Schatzell Street westbound traffic will be detoured onto Water Street.

In addition, Schatzell Street will be closed to through traffic between Water Street and Mesquite Street.  Parking will be permitted on this section of Schatzell Street.

Chaparral Street:  Chaparral Street will become a two-way traffic between Lawrence Street and Schatzell Street where parking will be allowed on this section of the Chaparral.  Motorists are cautioned to be aware of those vehicles that are entering and exiting this section of Chaparral at the Lawrence Street intersection.

McBride Lane (Between Leopard Street and IH-37 Eastbound Frontage Road)

Monday – Friday

McBride Lane:  Beginning Monday, January 21, 2013, the southbound traffic on McBride Lane will be closed to traffic between IH-37 frontage road and Up River Road.  Closure will be for approximately 30 days.  During this period, southbound traffic will be detoured onto southbound Navigation to IH-37.

Kostoryz Road

Saturday – Friday

Beginning January 23, 2013 through January 28, 2013, weather permitting; city contractors will be doing road work on Kostoryz Road between South Padre Island Drive (S.P.I.D.) and Mansheim Boulevard.  During this period there will be various lane shifts and traffic will be reduced to one through lane in each direction.   Upon completion, traffic between S.P.I.D and Gollihar Road will then be shifted onto the northbound lanes and be reduced to one through lane in each direction.

In addition, traffic on eastbound McArdle Road will be shifted onto the westbound lane where traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the Kostoryz Road intersection.

Staples Street (Williams Street to Saratoga Boulevard)

Saturday – Friday

Holly Road:

Left turns will be restricted at Holly Road from northbound Staples Street until further notice. Southbound drivers on Staples Street will not be able to turn left onto Holly Road and right turns will be restricted when the traffic signal is on red.  There are no turning restrictions for westbound and eastbound drivers on Holly Road onto Staples Street.

Wooldridge Road:  The Wooldridge Road traffic will be shifted onto the westbound lanes and traffic will be reduced to one through lane in each direction through the Staples Street Intersection.

Staples Street:   Contractors will shift the southbound Staples Street traffic onto the northbound lane reducing traffic to one through lane in each direction from the Moore Plaza entrance through the Williams Drive intersection.  Southbound drivers will have dedicated right and left turn lanes at Williams Drive.  Northbound drivers will have a dedicated right turn lane at Williams Drive but no left turns will be permitted.

On Staples Street from Woodridge Road to north of Holly Road, there are two lanes of traffic open in each direction.  Staples Street traffic, between Cain Drive and Bonner Drive, will be shifted onto the northbound lanes and traffic reduced to one through lane in each direction.

Bonner Drive, Cain Drive, or Curtis Clark Drive:  Cain Drive, Bonner Drive, or Curtis Clark Drive may be periodically closed at the Staples Street intersection.  Motorists will be detoured into Burton Lane.  In addition, when one street is closed, the other may be reduced to one lane with flaggers to direct traffic.  Once work is completed, each street will be closed for 10 days to pour concrete and allow the pavement to cure.

Sarazen Drive: Contractors will permit only inbound traffic to enter Sarazen Drive from Staples Street and traffic exiting must continue north on Sarazen and exit onto Wooldridge Road.

Rodd Field Road and Williams Drive

Saturday – Monday

Contractors will shift traffic onto the northbound lanes and reduce traffic to one through lane in each direction at the Rodd Field Road and Williams Drive intersection.  No left turns will continue to be enforced.

Bear Lane 

Saturday – Friday

Bear Lane will be closed from Green Point Drive to Old Brownsville Road and closed on Navigation Boulevard from Agnes Road to Old Brownsville Road.

Airline Road

Saturday – Friday

Traffic on Airline Road is closed to traffic between Wall Street and Rodd Field Road.  In addition, eastbound traffic on Lipes Boulevard and Slough Road will be closed between Giants Drive and Rodd Field Road.   Eastbound Lipes Boulevard traffic will be detoured north onto Giants Drive, and eastbound Wall Street traffic will be detoured northbound onto Airline Road.

Staples Street and Weber Road/Doddridge Street

Saturday – Friday

City contractors will be doing road work on Staples Street between the Weber Road/Doddridge Street intersection and Barracuda Place.  As this project is ongoing, southbound traffic on this section of Staples Street will be shifted onto the northbound lane and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.  No left turns will be permitted onto Doddridge Street from Staples Street.

Status of the 71st:

The Corpus Christi Police Department 71st Academy session ended week 2 with a boom! The Corpus Christi Police Department Bomb Squad delivered an 8 hour block of instruction on explosives awareness. The purpose of the class was to train the Cadets to properly and safely respond to bomb threats and reports for suspicious items. The Bomb Squad then provided a demonstration for the cadets at the Corpus Christi Police Bomb Range in order to exhibit the dangers of explosive materials officers may encounter on patrol.

The Cadets were assigned to read Chapters 3,4, and 5 of the Corpus Christi Police General Rules Manual for homework over the weekend. Chapter 3 covers Supervisor Responsibilities; Chapter 4 explains Uniforms, Appearance, and Equipment; and Chapter 5 provides the standard for Conduct and Performance.

“Color Me Rad” Street Closure

Northbound Shoreline Boulevard will be closed to traffic between William Street and Resaca Street.  Mesquite Street will be closed between Palo Alto Street and Port Avenue.  Port Avenue will be closed between Sam Rankin Street and Chaparral Street.  No Parking will be allowed on the seawall beginning at 10:00p.m., Friday, February 1, 2013 between Cooper’s Alley and Resaca Street.

Traffic control devices will guide traffic around the event area.  Motorists should expect delays and should seek alternate routes to by-pass this area if possible.  Motorists are advised to observe all warning signs and barricades for their safety and that of the event participants and spectators.

Teen Injured During Robbery

A 14-year-old reported to Police he was assaulted by ten individuals as he walked home from school.  The teenager told Officers he was attacked with board and punched numerous times during the assault until he was knocked to the ground. His attackers continued to kick and hit him; ripping both his earrings from his ears.

The victim advised the suspects ages ranged from 14 to 20 years of age.  The victim was unable to provide Officers with a motive for the assault.

Store Employee Uninjured During Robbery

Officers were dispatched to the EZ Money in Moore Plaza for a hold up alarm.  Once Officers arrived they were informed the loan company had been robbed.

A 26-year-old store employee told Officers an armed man entered the store and pointed a handgun at her demanding she hand over the money.  The man walked out of the business with an undetermined amount of money.

The suspect is described as a White male, 30 to 40 years of age, 5’10” to 5’11” feet tall and weighing 160 to 180 lbs.   He was last seen wearing a long-sleeved plaid shirt, blue jeans, and dirty shoes.  The suspect’s face was covered with a bandanna and a baseball cap.

Police Remember Juan Rincon Prieto

The Corpus Christi Police Department remembers Senior Officer Juan Rincon Prieto and his line of duty death on February 2, 1993. Officer Prieto was directing traffic at Up River Road and Suntide when he was struck and killed by a pickup truck. Officer Prieto had served in the Corpus Christi Police Department for 27 years and was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

A park on Woodland Creek Drive in Corpus Christi near Callicoate Road is named Senior Officer Prieto Park in his memory.

Operation Imitation Nation

On Friday February 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Narcotics Vice Investigations Division (NVID) in conjunction with the Gang Unit, the Organized Crime Unit and the Uniform Patrol Division kicked off “Operation Imitation Nation” and served 8 search warrants as well as 8 arrest warrants at various retail establishments throughout Corpus Christi.

The warrants were issued as the result of a 16 month undercover investigation by NVID into the selling and distribution of illegal synthetic marijuana products and illegal drug paraphernalia by the targeted retail locations.

There will be a press conference this evening at a time yet to be determined at which time the media will be provided further details of the operation.  The locations at which search and arrest warrants were served are as follows:

Man Untruthful About Home Invasion

Corpus Christi Police Detectives met with a 24-year-old man who reported to Police he was shot in his home when he interrupted a burglary.  During their interview with Detectives they learned that the homeowner had been untruthful in previous statements to Officers.

Detectives report the gunshot the man sustained was self-inflicted.  Detectives are no longer investigating the Burglary of a Habitation and Aggravated Assault, but Detectives will meet with Nueces County District Attorney’s Office to discuss the possibility filing charges on the homeowner for filing a False Report to a Police Officer which is a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days and a $2,000 fine.

Wanted Woman Flees to Local Cemetary

Police were called to The Rose Hill Cemetery to assist with a possible wanted suspect.  A Refugio Police Officer had attempted to arrest the woman at a local business when she fled through a bathroom room window. Following up on tips received, the Officer located Shannel Donna Tilley (02/03/75) hiding out in the cemetery.

Tilly was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  She was charged with four outstanding warrants:  Forgery (No Bond), two Forgery of a Financial Instrument~Elderly with a Surety Bond of $25,000 each,  and  a second Forgery warrant with a $25,000 surety bond.
