Gang Unit Conducts Warrant Round-up

The Corpus Christi Police Gang Unit conducted a warrant round-up Thursday morning in which six known gang members were arrested. The arrests were at several homes throughout Corpus Christi. The purpose of the round-up was to apply law enforcement on known gang members in this community. Those arrested were:

The Gang Unit also came in contact with a seventh fugitive while conducting the operation:

There were no injuries in the arrests. Seven other individuals were served with arrest warrants who were already incarcerated.

Gunfire Leads to Arrest

Police were called to the Six Points area for gunfire being heard.  Senior Officer C. Freeman was flagged down by several customers at Pleasures Club and advised that the suspect was at the Six Points intersection.

Officer Freeman caught up to the vehicle and pulled it over in the 1300 block of 5th Street.  As Officer Freeman approached the vehicle he could smell the odor of burnt Marijuana.  With the assistance of back-up Officers, the driver Longino Garcia Castillo (05/22/90) was contacted and found to have a firearm inside the vehicle along with a couple of spent shell casings.  Officers also found several Hydrocodone pills and a plastic bag containing a small amount of Marijuana.

Castillo was arrested and charged with Discharging a Firearm in Certain Municipalities, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Marijuana.

Drugs, Money Seized During Search and Capture of Two Local Gang Members

Corpus Christi Police Department Gang Investigator R. Flores obtained an arrest warrant for known gang member Richard Lara (07/03/76) who was a suspect in the aggravated assault of a 41-year-old man.

On Wednesday, January 16, 2013, Gang Investigators along with members of the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force went looking for Lara.  Task Force member made entry into a home in the 300 block of Hiawatha.   Once inside they found Richard’s brother, Roland Lara (01/14/78), as well as cocaine and manufacturing paraphernalia.

A search warrant was obtained and Gang Officers seized 84.48 grams of Crack Cocaine, 490.58 grams of Cocaine, $1,067 in cash, manufacturing paraphernalia, and a couple of boxes of ammunition.

Within a few minutes of Officers securing the Hiawatha address; Richard showed up at his brother-in-law’s residence at 2746 Lawton and was taken into custody. No weapons or drugs were found at this residence.

Both brothers were arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  Roland Lara was charged with Manufacture/Delivery of a Controlled Substance, while his brother Richard was charged with the outstanding warrant for Aggravated Assault.  His bond was set at $100,000.

Senior Officer J. Rhodes was dispatched to Jean Street and Delphine Drive for a suspicious subject in the area.  Upon arriving in the area, the man who was dressed in black clothing began to run when he saw the police car, dropping  several envelopes as he fled.

He ran to the west side of the Time Warner building at 4060 SPID, dropping envelopes as he fled.  The man trapped himself in a dead-end and was unable to climb a ten foot tall chain link fence with barbed wire on the top.  Officer Rhodes was able to corner the burglar until Senior Officer L. Rodriguez arrived.

The envelopes were found to have Appliance Mart printed on them.  The business which was nearby was checked by Senior Officer L. Jackson who found the front door glass had been shattered and the building burglarized.

Officers also found a hammer and a mask nearby.  Adam Albert Ybanez (12/27/81) refused to identify himself to Officers, but they were able to match the name on a pawn ticket to the same name on the Police Department computer database.

Ybanez was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Building, Evading Arrest, Unlawful Use of Criminal Instruments, and Failure to Identify.

Man Charged with Intoxication Manslaughter

Police were called to Hwy 361 and Zahn Road for a traffic accident on the beach.  Upon their arrival, Officers were told by witnesses that a woman and a man had been struck by a red Dodge Ram pick-up truck.

According to witnesses, the driver Dahlton Osborn (07/16/93) had been driving recklessly on the beach and into the dunes when it struck the two pedestrians.

Both pedestrians were taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel.  The 25-year-old woman had serious leg injuries and the 41-year-old man was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The truck fled and was stopped by Officers with the Port Aransas Police Department shortly after the vehicle information was broadcast.

Osborn who appeared intoxicated was turned over to Officers with our Police Department.  He was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a Breath Test.  He was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.

Osborn was charged with Intoxication Manslaughter with a Motor Vehicle, Intoxication Assault with a Motor Vehicle and two counts of Accident Involving Injury or Death.  His bond was set at 150,000.

Overnight Utility Work to Affect Staples Street Traffic

The City of Corpus Christi Traffic Engineering office advises residents beginning Thursday, January 17, 2013, between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., weather permitting, American Electric Power (AEP) will be doing utility work on Staples Street between Peerman Place and Hamlin Drive.

While this work is underway, this section of Staples Street will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction.  Flaggers will be on site to guide motorist through the intersection.

Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction site.  While the work is underway, motorists should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the area if possible.  Motorists are also advised to observe all construction warning signs and barricades for their safety and that of construction crews.   Access to local driveways will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.

Man Impersonates “Maytag Repairman”

Police were called to the Memorial Apartments for loud noises coming from the laundry room.  The caller believed there was a burglary being committed.  Senior Officer J. Clement arrived to find Cody Ryan Yarbrough (04/17/86) walking out of the laundry room.  Yarbrough was found to be wet through.

Yarbrough had several tools in his sweat shirt as well as a coin cover with blood on it and several dollars’ worth of quarters in his pant pocket.   Yarbrough expressed his concern over finding the laundry room burglarized and attempted to fix the laundry machines.

Further investigation revealed, the laundry room door had been kicked in and one of the washer’s water hoses had been ripped out when it was dumped on its side.  Officer found two other laundry machines had also been burglarized.

Yarbrough was arrested and charged with Burglary of a Building, three counts of Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine, Unlawful Possession of Criminal Instruments along with an outstanding Municipal Court warrant.

Man Sells Invalid Wrestling Tickets Through Facebook Advertising & Gets Arrested

                A 33-year-old man was arrested Sunday for selling invalid tickets to a WWE Wrestling event though Facebook advertising.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call at a fast food restaurant on the Cross-town Expressway at Horne Road for a complaint by a 22-year-old woman who bought tickets to a professional wrestling show and discovered the tickets were invalid. The 22-year-old woman told police Marcus Zamarripa (3/7/1979) posted tickets for sale on Facebook. The 22-year-old woman said she bought tickets and then later discovered the tickets were invalid. The 22-year-old woman said she went back to the Facebook posts and discovered Zamarripa was on his way to the restaurant to meet a 23-year-old woman to sell tickets for the same seats.

Corpus Christi Police Patrol officers found the 23-year-old woman at the restaurant and then met Zamarripa when he arrived to meet the 23-year-old woman.  Investigating Patrol Officers discovered Zamarripa sold several copies of tickets for the same seats to multiple people.

Zamarripa was arrested for Fraud, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine. Zamarripa was then delivered to the city detention center.

Two Drivers Taken to Local Hospitals After Head-On Collision

Police were called to the 6400 block of Weber Road for a head-on collision. The Officers’ investigation revealed a black Lexus driven by a 59 year-old man was headed southbound on Weber when he drifted  into the northbound lane and struck a tan Sierra pick-up truck driven by a 62-year-old woman.

The Lexus bounced off the truck and struck a black Ford Expedition head-on.  The SUV was driven by a 40-year-old woman who was accompanied by a 5-year-old child.

The driver of the Lexus was seriously injured and taken to Spohn Memorial, while the driver pick-up was taken to Bay Area Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The occupants of the Expedition were advised CCFD Emergency Personnel they would seek their own medical treatment.

The investigation is being conducted by the Traffic and Safety Division and no charges have been filed at this time.  The preliminary investigation leads Officers to believe the driver of the Lexus suffered a medical condition.

Cold Weather Escalates Search for Missing Man

The Corpus Christi Police Department is asking the public’s assistance in locating a man reported missing on January 13, 2013.  The man’s brother told Police he visited with his brother Eric Phillip Barnes, 44, on January 4, 2013 at a local hospital.

Barnes was released later that day and the family has been searching for him since.  His brother told Officers that Eric suffers from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and mental issues.  Eric is in need of his oxygen and medications.
