Utility Work Will Affect Greenwood Drive Traffic

The City of Corpus Christi Traffic Engineering office advises residents beginning Friday, January 4 and Monday, January 7, 2013, weather permitting; city contractors will be performing field investigations and roadway testing on Greenwood Drive between Gollihar Road and Horne Road.  During this period, either the northbound or southbound traffic on Greenwood will be reduced to one lane through the worksite.

Traffic control devices will guide motorists through the construction site.  While the work is underway, motorists should expect delays and are advised to seek alternate routes to avoid the area if possible.  Motorists are also advised to observe all construction warning signs and barricades for their safety and that of construction crews.   Access to local driveways will be maintained throughout the duration of the project.

Shoplifter Foiled by Cell Phone Pix

Occurred on 01/02/13,  7:42am  Theft  1530 Airline Road  1301020023Senior Officer J. Fedler responded to the Lowe’s at 1530 Airline for a theft involving a Hispanic male who walked out of the store with a shopping cart full of tools.  As loss prevention officers ran up to the man’s vehicle, he drove off.

One of the loss prevention officers photographed the license plate to the older model black Cadillac with her cell phone.   Senior Officer M.W. Rogers was able to track the registered address along with several other addresses for the suspect involved in the theft utilizing the Police Department’s computer databases.

The Cadillac was located at 409 Weaver and Adam Kyle Estes (09/15/72) was found inside the residence.  Estes was pretending to be asleep when Officers contacted him.

Estes was positively identified by loss prevention officers and placed under arrest.  He was charged with Theft~Shoplifting a State Jail Felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a $10,000 fine.  The stolen property valued at $2,585 was recovered and returned to Lowe’s.

Lt. T.A. Nichols stated, “Super pop by all involved Officers over a prolonged investigation supplemented by Senior Officer Roger’s computer abilities.”

Wrong Way Driver charged with DWI

Police were called to the area of Ayers and Gollihar for a suspected drunk driver traveling the wrong way on Gollihar.  Officers contacted the driver Nicole Marie Barrera (07/03/91) when she pulled behind the CVS Pharmacy at Ayers and Horne.  Further investigation revealed, a witness observed the silver Hyundai Accent driven by Barrera headed the wrong way on Gollihar when it almost struck a tow truck with a taxi cab on it.  He called Police and reported the dangerous driver.

Barrera who appeared intoxicated was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests along with a Breath Test.   She was arrested and booked at the City Detention Center.  Barrera was charged with Driving While Intoxicated Blood Alcohol Content  over .15 which is a Class “A” Misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

The Corpus Christi Police Department  welcomes citizens getting involved and reporting crime, but asks that citizens do not follow suspected drunk drivers because of the risks involved.   We ask that you call 911 and report  the suspected drunk driver.  MetroComm call takers will quickly issue a B.O.L.O. (Be On the Lookout) and assign the call to nearest Officer.

The Texas Governor declared January as Crime Stoppers Month in Texas.

Crime Stoppers sponsors a campaign every January to increase awareness of its successful crime reduction efforts. Crime Stoppers has created an effective method to solve crimes by the combination of media awareness, monetary rewards, and anonymity for those who provide information about unsolved crimes. The Crime Stoppers programs bring together businesses, citizens, law enforcement, and the media to make our communities a safer place.

Crime Stoppers has been particularly effective in Texas where anonymous tips have led to 175,000 arrests and $1.2 billion in recovered property and seized narcotics since the inception of the program in 1976.

The official declaration was signed by Texas Governor Rick Perry on December 12, 2012 which proclaimed January 2013 to be Crime Stoppers Month.

Police Arrest Man For Bank Robbery On Leopard Street

                A 30-year-old man was arrested by the Corpus Christi Police Department for a bank robbery at the 11000 block of Leopard Street Wednesday morning.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a bank robbery Wednesday morning at 10:32am. A white man entered the bank and displayed a handgun. The man demanded the bank tellers put cash in a plastic bag. No person was injured in the event. The man then left the bank and ran toward Violet Road.

The man was described as a white man who wore a wig and fake beard with a dark color hooded jacket, blue jeans, and gray tennis shoes. The man ran to a store near Violet Road and drove away in a car. A witness provided police with a license plate of the car.

Corpus Christi Police Robbery/Homicide Detectives developed information to identify 30-year-old Glen Sympson (5/21/1982) as responsible for the robbery. Sympson was arrested at his residence and delivered to the city detention center for Aggravated Robbery, a 1st degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Burglar Caught in the Act by Neighbors Who Call Police

Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of S. Brownlee after neighbors observed a man kick his way into a residence through the front door.

Armando De Leon (05/23/75) was caught by Senior Officer J. Neal Jr. as he walked away from the residence.   De Leon was positively identified by a witness and placed under arrest.  He was charged with Burglary of a Habitation which is a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The C.C.P.D.’s commitment to “Keep Corpus Christi Safe” has continued with its “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative”

On Saturday, January 5, 2013, a total of 88 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will be auctioned at the Corpus Christi Police Department’s  Vehicle Impound Lot located at 5485 Greenwood Drive during our monthly auction. The site has four paved acres for an auction lot.

Approximately 15 of these vehicles are “No Insurance” impounds. On Friday, January 4, 2013, the general public will be allowed to register and view the vehicles to be auctioned from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no registration fee.

On the day of the auction, the general public can continue to register and view the vehicles from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The auction will commence promptly at 10:00 a.m.   The vehicles to be auctioned can be viewed at www.siskauction.com. An auction list may also be downloaded from the same website.

The department’s strong stand and enforcement of this “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative” will continue and all vehicles involved in accidents will be impounded and the driver cited if they are unable to provide financial proof of insurance. Driver’s license and proof of financial responsibility checkpoints will continue to be conducted at the Shift Captains’ authorization.

Officers issued 5,509 citations and impounded 1,212 vehicles for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility during 2011.  During 2012, Officers issued 5,756 citations for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility and impounded 1,009 vehicles for the same charge.

One Man Arrested in Connection with Midnight Shooting

Corpus Christi Police were called to the Gaslight Apartments for a shooting call.  Upon their arrival, Officers found a 37-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest.  The man was rushed to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel.

Further investigation revealed the victim was involved in a disturbance with Aaron Jovan Guajardo (08/18/92) in the parking lot of the complex.  Guajardo ran off, but was quickly located by Senior Officer L. Preiss at the Times Market, 4702 Kostoryz.

Corpus Christi Homicide/Robbery Detectives interviewed Guajardo and consequently arrested.  Guajardo was booked at the City Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon which is punishable by up to 99 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

New Year’s Weekend Enforcement Review

The Corpus Christi Police Department has enforcement data from the New Year’s weekend to share with the public.

The operational period between December 28, 2012 until 9am on January 1, 2013 The Corpus Christi Police Department arrested 23 impaired drivers. There were:

  • 1 Driving Under the Influence arrest for a person under the age of 21 who consumed alcoholic beverages and drove;
  • 19 Driving While Intoxicated as a 1st time offense for D.W.I.;
  • 1 Driving While Intoxicated arrest with 3 or more previous convictions for D.W.I.;
  • 2 Driving While Intoxicated arrest with blood alcohol content over .15.

Corpus Christi Police Officers also made 2 arrests for reckless driving in an effort to reduce hazardous driving on the city streets.

Corpus Christi Police also received 143 fireworks complaints for the New Year’s Holiday. The Corpus Christi Police makes every effort to work as an equal partner with the community to reduce crime, reduce the fear of crime, and enhance public safety.

Police Investigate First Homicide Of 2013

The Corpus Christi Police Department is investigating the first homicide of 2013 at 1010 Behman Street after the death of a 35-year-old man Tuesday morning.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a disturbance call which involved gunshots at 1010 Behman Street at 3:26am Tuesday morning. Responding police officers found an injured 35-year-old man in the parking lot and directed an ambulance crew to provide aid to the 35-year-old man. The 35-year-old man was taken to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

Witnesses guided police and said the person who caused the injury went inside an apartment with a firearm and refused to come out. Police Officers removed everyone from two surrounding apartments to a place of safety.

The Corpus Christi Police SWAT team and the Corpus Christi Police Hostage Negotiating team arrived and initiated a dialog with the 22-year-old man identified as a suspect in this case. The 22-year-old man peacefully surrendered to police at 4:43am. Corpus Christi Police believe there are no additional suspects in this event.

Corpus Christi Police Robbery/Homicide Detectives continue to investigate this event and gather information. Detectives applied for a search warrant of the apartment from which the 22-year-old suspect surrendered in order to evaluate more evidence and data with the assistance of the Corpus Christi Police Forensics Lab Technicians.

Anyone with additional information about this event should contact Corpus Christi Police at 886-2841 to make the information available to the detectives assigned this case. This information will be updated upon delivery of any suspect to the city detention center.

Update: 22 year old Patrick Dwayne Todd (3/21/1990) was arrested for murder and delivered to the Corpus Christi City Detention Center for murder. The charge is a 1st degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
