Details Released on Officer Involved Shooting

Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson released the following statement on December 10, 2012 at a 1:30 pm news conference held at the Corpus Christi Police Department:

On December 09, 2012 at 8:39pm Corpus Christi Police Officers responded to a disturbance with a weapon at the 1100 block of Salem. The caller, 56-year-old Daniel Scott advised that he was armed and that his neighbors were posing a threat. It is believed that Mr. Scott was suffering from mental illness.

Trained crisis negotiators attempted to contact Daniel Scott for hours. Officers were unable to establish meaningful dialog. Upon attempting to make physical contact with Mr. Scott, he fired upon them. Officers returned fire and shot Daniel Scott.  Despite receiving immediate medical treatment at the scene, Mr. Scott was pronounced dead later at Spohn Memorial.

The officers involved in this incident are:

  • Senior Officer Rigoberto Montejano, a 9 year veteran of the Corpus Christi Police Department
  • Senior Officer Amador Gonzalez, a 17 year veteran of the Corpus Christi Police Department

Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure in these types of incidents. Although the investigation is ongoing and still in its early stage, I feel confident the investigation will determine that our officers acted in accordance with department policy.

This was a tragic event for all involved and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Daniel Scott for their loss.
