“Kimbo” Does It Again

Senior Officer B. Martin was patrolling his beat when he drove by a well-known drug house and observed a white Ford Explorer parked in the driveway.  The Explorer was found to be stolen out of Austin.

Officer Martin called for back-up and contacted John Douglas Houston (02/15/78) who was found to wanted on several warrants.  Further investigation revealed Houston was the “owner” of the stolen vehicle.  He was found to be armed with a pocket knife and a black jack.

Senior Officer L. Preiss and his canine partner were called to assist and “Kimbo” alerted to the center console where Officers found a Hide-a-Can along with a revolver.   Houston was arrested and charged with four outstanding Nueces County warrants along with Theft, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon (black jack) and Unlawful Carrying of a Firearm by a Felon.

Lt. P. McMenamy nominated Senior Officers Martin and Preiss along with “Kimbo” as Officers of the Month noting this was Kimbo’s second alert this month in which a handgun was recovered.

Letter Carrier Seriously Injured Delivering Mail

Occurred on 10/19/12, 4:17pm   Major Accident   3201 S. Staples  C1207968

Police were called to the Corner Mart at 3210 S. Staples for an accident involving a United States Postal Service Letter Carrier.  Further investigation revealed the 18-year-old driver of a silver Toyota 4-Runner gassed up and then backed up to the store when he accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the break.

The 45-year-old letter carrier delivering the mail to the store was pinned between the truck and the store wall.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The driver and occupants in the 4-Runner, aged 1, 3, 14, and 19 were not injured.  Traffic Investigators were called to assist and the investigation is ongoing.

Officer E. Tagle pulled over a gold Lincoln Navigator for a traffic violation in the 1000 block of Clare.  The driver Raul Barrera Jr. (01/15/85) was placed under arrest for an outstanding Jim Wells County warrant for Probation Violation (No Bond) and Driving While License Invalid.

Barrera was additionally charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance when approximately 24 grams of Cocaine were found in the floor board of the vehicle.

Officers also found several packages (77.28 grams) of what is believed to be “synthetic marijuana” which was confiscated pending further investigation. Barrera could face additional charges if the “synthetic marijuana” is deemed illegal.

Charger Being Driven at 5mph Draws Officers Attention

Officers J. Rhodes and J. Wicks observed a blue Dodge Charger make a wide right turn onto Weber Road from McArdle, driving at about five mph in a thirty-five mph posted speed limit area.

The driver Monica Duran Garcia (11/23/83) was pulled over and appeared intoxicated when contacted.  She was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a warrant obtained for a blood specimen.  She was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated~Open Alcohol Container.

Her passenger, Joanna Jaramilla (04/28/84) was also arrested and charged with Public Intoxication.  She was additionally charged with Possession of Cocaine when a small quantity of Cocaine was found.

Both women were booked at the City Detention Center.

You Can’t Out Run the Law

Richard E. Roberts

Officers were called to 1504 Sam Rankin for a man on bicycle who fired several rounds in the area.  Arriving Officers attempted to contact Richard Roberts (11/03/91) who matched the description of the shooter at Sam Rankin and Chipito Street.  Roberts dumped his bicycle and took off running towards Northside Manor.

The chase was on with all three running at a full sprint.  Roberts dumped his backpack on the second floor of the apartment complex.  The Officers lost sight of Roberts as he turned the corner and began searching for Roberts.  They found him hiding on the third floor of the apartment building and placed him in police custody.  A pistol was found inside Roberts’ backpack which matched bullets found on his person.

Roberts was charged with Evading Arrest, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Tampering with Evidence with Intent to Impair, and an outstanding Municipal Court warrant in the amount of $254.  He was additionally charged with Failure to Identify as a Fugitive from Justice when he refused to identify himself.

Four Arrested During Shooting Investigation

Police were called to the Christy Mobile Home Park for complaints of shots being fired about 9:30pm on Thursday night.  Upon their arrival, Officers contacted the 28-year-old victim and a couple of witnesses who reported Cory Baker (04/15/86) was seen shooting a firearm in the parking lot.

The victim and his friends told Officers they were inside the trailer when they heard gunshots and went outside to investigate.  A confrontation ensued and Cory Baker struck the victim with a baseball bat.  The victim was not seriously injured.

Baker was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine and Disorderly Conduct Discharging/Display a Firearm which is a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $4,000 fine.

During their investigation, Officers contacted Cody James Baker (08/26/84) who was cussing and yelling and appeared to be intoxicated.  Cody was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication.   1210180170

Cody’s Brother Marshal Anthony Baker (07/15/77) was also arrested when he grabbed his brother Cody and tried to pull him away from the Officers as they handcuffed him.  A struggle ensued in which Marshal punched the assisting Officer in the face,  busting his lip.  Marshal was tased allowing Officers to handcuff and place him under arrest.

Marshal was charged with Assault Causes Bodily Injury Public Servant which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine along with Interfering with Public Duties which is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $4,000 fine. 121018173

A fourth man, Christopher Garcia (01/25/80) was arrested and charged with an outstanding warrant out of Brooks County for Failure to Appear.  1210180169

“Hat-Trick” Lands DWI Driver in Jail

Officers were dispatched to Leopard and Westchester for a traffic accident in which a vehicle had struck a light pole.  Upon their arrival, Officers found the driver of a red Dodge Durango had struck a fence and mailbox along with a utility pole in the 600 block of Van Cleve Drive.  Officers contacted a female passenger, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

Further investigation revealed the driver Jose Rene Gomez (03/13/82) had fled, but returned while Officers were conducting their investigation as he did not want his sister arrested.

Gomez appeared to be intoxicated and a blood warrant obtained.  A blood specimen was taken and Gomez was arrested.  He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Damage or Destruction.

Man Shot Over Stolen “Versace” Sunglasses

Officers contacted the 26–year-old victim who reported he was walking in the area of Port and Mary when he was approached by man and a confrontation ensued.  The man pulled a gun and shot the victim in the groin.  The victim was uncooperative with Officers, but did tell them the shooter accused him of stealing a pair of sunglasses.

The victim was able to run home and call police.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect is described as a light complected Hispanic male, 24 years of age, 5’8” to 5’9” feet tall and weighing 160 lbs.

Although, the victim was unhelpful, Gang Unit Officers were able to identify a suspect in the shooting.  During their investigation, Johnathan Michael Trevino (09/26/88) was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance when several pills were found.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Undercover Officers Arrest 10 in “Jane Sting”

The Narcotics Vice Investigations Division conducted an undercover prostitution sting on October 17, 2012 beginning at 6:00pm and ending at 9:30pm.  The sting targeted the prostitutes in specific areas in which complaints have been received, mainly in the North Central region of the city.  The sting resulted in the arrest of ten men and women.  They include:

  • Efrain Ibarra (12/22/94) was charged with Prostitution, Class “B” Misdemeanor, 1210170140
  • Martha Elisha Smith (05/06/83) was charged with Prostitution, Class “B” Misdemeanor, 1210170149
  • Lourdes Ibarra (07/21/71)was charged with Prostitution, Class “B” Misdemeanor, 1210170146
  • Benjamin Brooks (05/13/85) Two Counts of Delivery of Dangerous Drugs, 1210170154

The men and women were booked at the City Detention Center.  One man and five women were charged with Prostitution, which is a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.  Two of  the women  were charged with Prostitution, a State Jail Felony (three or more convictions) which is punishable by up two years in jail and $10,000 fine.  Two were also booked on drug related State Jail Felonies.

Woman Charged with U.U.M.V.

Caryn Ann House

Reported on 10/15/12, 7:07 am  Burglary of a Habitation/U.U.M.V.  400 block of  Pennington Drive  1210150028 

On October 15, 2012, Officers contacted the 74-year-old victim who reported the keys to his white Pontiac G6 along with a pistol were stolen from inside his residence.  The keys were used to steal his Pontiac from the drive way.  The victim was unable to provide Officers with any suspect information.

The following day, shortly after 4:00pm, Officers received a call to the parking garage at 400 Mann Street for an intoxicated female in a white vehicle.  It was discovered the vehicle was the stolen Pontiac from Pennington Drive.  A witness told Officers the female had walked away, but provided them with a physical description of the woman.

One of the Officers recognized the woman as Caryn Ann House (05/25/77) and began searching the area for her.  House was found behind the Enterprise Rental Car Agency at 823 N. Water Street.  The Officer observed House attempt to hide a pouch containing several syringes containing Heroin and Heroin residue.  House was also found to be have in her possession the set of keys to the stolen Pontiac.

House was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle.  The vehicle was impounded and will be returned to the owner.  Officers were unable to locate the stolen weapon. (1210160076 and 1210150027)
