10 Women Arrested for Prostitution

On 06/29/12 the Corpus Christi Police Department Narcotics and Vice Investigations Division (NVID) with the assistance of Patrol Officers conducted a prostitution “Jane Sting” in the North Central region of the city.  The undercover operation aimed at curbing prostitution.  Ten women were taken into custody after agreeing to exchange sexual favors for money. 

The Narcotics/Vice Division whenever possible will enhance prostitution charges on repeat offenders as noted below.  Officers made the following arrests:

Prostitution is a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.   If the suspect has one or two prior convictions for Prostitution, the charge will be upgraded to a Class “A” Misdemeanor and is punishable up to  a year in jail and a $4,000.  Three or more convictions will upgrade the Prostitution charge to a State Jail Felony and is punishable by up to two years in a state jail and a $10,000 fine.

Police Find “Meth” Lab During Home Invasion Investigation

Officers responded to the Bay Club Apartments for a home invasion.  They arrived to find the victim unable to provide a lot of details due to his facial injuries.  He was taken by CCFD Emergency Personnel to Spohn Memorial.

Officers conducting their investigation discovered several areas of the apartment had been ransacked and a computer tower taken.  Officers could smell what appeared to be ammonia like scent which led them to the oven where they found a bag containing equipment for a portable “meth” lab.  Officers evacuated nearby apartments and the Narcotics/Vice Division was called out for assistance.

Narcotics/Vice Investigators confirmed the bag was being used as a portable “meth” lab and disposed of it.  The residents were allowed to return to their apartments.  The investigation is still ongoing and the Narcotics/Vice Division will determine what charges will be filed in connections with “meth” lab.

Getaway Driver Ditches Car in Ditch

Officers responded to the Valero Convenience Store for a robbery in progress. The store clerk and witnesses were able to provide descriptions of the suspects along with their vehicle description. The clerk told Officers the two men walked into the store together. One of the men had his hand underneath his shirt giving the impression he was armed with a weapon. The man demanded the money from the register and the clerk complied. Both suspects fled the store in a blue vehicle.

While en route, Officers observed the suspects walking away from the wrecked vehicle on Up River Road near Navigation Boulevard. The getaway driver had lost control of the car and it landed in a ditch. As Officers detained them, they found several baggies of Marijuana onto the ground. Also found near the Marijuana was the money taken in the robbery.

Both men were positively identified and arrested. Mario Perez (06/27/91) and Edwardo Trejo (01/12/93) were booked at the City Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Robbery and Possession of Marijuana.

41-Year-Old Killed in Bar Altercation, Murder Warrant Issued for Suspect

Officers responded to the Cadillac Bar for a shooting with multiple victims.   Upon their arrival, Officers found a 41-year-old man just inside the entrance to the bar with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.  A 36-year-old man was found inside the bar with a gunshot to the leg.   Both victims were rushed to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel. 

Further investigation revealed the 41-year-old man and the suspect became involved in an altercation.  During the disagreement, the suspect drew a firearm and fatally shot the victim, who was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The 36-year-old victim was treated and released.

Patrol Officers, Homicide/Robbery Detectives, along with Gang Unit Investigators were able to develop information in their investigations which identified the suspect.  Detective R. Lee was able to obtain an arrest warrant on Jose Alfredo Moreno (06/09/83) for Murder and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.  His bond was set at $1,000,000.  Moreno is described as a Hispanic male, 5’7″ feet tall and weighing 185 lbs.

Grant Buys Medical Kit That Saves Life

A new Corpus Christi Police Officer on his first month of duty used medical equipment provided by the Crime Control and Prevention District to provide a possibly life saving act on a victim of an aggravated assault.

Corpus Christi Police Officer Allan Miller responded to a fight in progress at Diana’s Place Bar on Thursday, June 21, 2012. Officer Miller saw the 32-year-old victim had significant damage to an arm with serious blood loss. Emergency Medical Services crews were not at the scene and Officer Miller directly retrieved a medical kit provided by grant funds from the city crime control board.

The Police Department bought 460 “go bags” that contain first aid kits, tourniquets, blood clot accelerants, and C.P.R. tools for use for officers in emergencies. Police Officers are not trained medical technicians, but the tools were provided to be used on other police officers.

Officer Miller chose to use the medical kit to control the bleeding experienced by the 32-year-old aggravated assault victim. Commander John Houston of the Personnel Development Division in the Corpus Christi Police Department said the action by Officer Miller was likely a life saving event with tools officers would not have without the money provided by the crime control board.

The 32-year-old man’s attackers have not been yet been apprehended. Police continue to search for two stocky Hispanic males that both wore blue jeans and were heavily tattooed. The two suspects drove away in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle with bright blue headlights.

Crash Spills Gravel on Freeway, Disrupts Lunchtime Traffic

A 56 year old man was taken to the hospital for non-incapacitating injuries after a single vehicle crash that closed off much of the westbound freeway over Greenwood and disrupted lunch time traffic.

A street department dump truck rolled on the freeway and spilled 7 yards of gravel. The operator of the truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. City crews patched damage to the asphalt caused by the crash. The Texas Department of Transportation assisted to clean the gravel from the road with a vacuum sweeper. The crash closed a portion of the freeway to one lane for 3 hours.

The operator of the dump truck was cited for changed lanes when unsafe.

A Litha Dodge employee told Officers a black 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck was stolen from their dealership early Thursday morning.  Officers were able to locate the unoccupied pick-up truck in the 4200 block of Warwick.  The truck valued at $35,000 was returned to Lithia Dodge.

Motive Unknown in Stabbing, Neighbor Arrested

Two neighbors at the Sea Gulf Villa became involved in an argument in the complex courtyard.  The argument escalated when one attacked the other with a knife.  Irving Kinler (12/26/42) was arrested and a pocket knife was recovered. 

The 66-year-old victim was taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel where his wounds were treated and appeared to non-life threatening.

Kinler was booked at the City Detention Center and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Police Seek Credit Card Thieves

Corpus Christi Police Financial Crimes Investigators would like help from the public to identify and locate two individuals that fraudulently used a credit card to purchase products at several stores.

A 41-year-old Corpus Christi man reported to Corpus Christi Police that his credit cards were taken without permission on June 14, 2012. The 41-year-old man told police the cards were used at several locations to conduct unauthorized transactions at several locations which include the Target store in Moore Plaza.

Police Investigators obtained video recordings of the two individuals who participated in the unauthorized use of the credit cards. One of the suspects in this crime is described as a white man with short brown hair, who wore a black short sleeve t-shirt, denim shorts, white socks, and black shoes. The second suspect is described as a white female with blonde hair, who wore a purple short sleeve shirt and denim shorts.

The two suspects in this crime used a red 4 door sedan for transportation.

City Police and Fire Gear Up for July 4th Festivities

Independence Day celebrations include cook-outs, picnics, or a day at the beach with family and friends. In an effort, to make this July 4th Holiday safe, the Corpus Christi Police Department announces the July 4th crackdown on drunk drivers by designating it a “No Refusal” holiday.  The Nueces County District Attorney’s Office will be sponsoring a trained phlebotomist beginning Tuesday, July 3rd through Saturday, July 7, 2012 to assist in the collection of blood specimens from suspected intoxicated drivers. 

If you plan to drink please designate a sober driver before the celebrating begins.  If you’ve had too much to drink, call a taxi, a sober friend or family member to get you home safe. Remember, The Choice is Yours, Drive Sober!

Zero tolerance will also be given to the celebratory discharging of firearms into the air and fireworks within the Corpus Christi city limits.  A person found guilty of discharging a firearm can serve up to a year in jail and be fined up to $4,000.  Both Corpus Christi Fire and Police are again teaming up and will be out enforcing the City’s ordinance against the use and possession of fireworks.  Fire Officers and Police Officers will monitor firework stands, and seize illegal fireworks brought into the city.  Citations will be issued to violators who can be fined up to $2,000 for each package of fireworks.  If fireworks are being set off in your neighborhood, please avoid calling 911, but do call 886-COPS. 

The City of Corpus Christi will be hosting a “July 4th Big Bang Celebration” throughout the day, with the Corpus Christi Police and Fire  Department vehicle display at the FunDay KidZone  and culminating with the H-E-B Independence Day fireworks celebration on the USS Lexington, beginning at 9:30 pm.  For further information please visit the City of Corpus Christi website at http://www.cctexas.com/july4/.

Additional Officers will be assigned throughout the city and area beaches concentrating on DWI enforcement, monitoring the traffic flow at the intersection of Zahn Road at S.H. 361, and both sides of the beach alongside the Packery Channel.  Officers will also be responding to calls and actively looking for traffic violators.  Also working in conjunction with the Police Department are several Nueces County Adult Probation Officers who will team up with Patrol Officers to facilitate the arrest of a probationer violating their probation.

All of these efforts will be focused to ensure the citizens and vacationers visiting our city and beaches this July 4th Holiday will have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The attached maps will assist in providing directions for different routes to and from the fireworks display at the USS Lexington.  Traffic Officers will be providing traffic control and they recommend that you arrive early, be patient, and obey all traffic directions.
