A 51-year-old man who failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of 17th and Marguerite was struck by a white Nissan P4. The driver of the Nissan braked, but was unable to stop in time, but struck the bicycle’s rear tire.
The bicyclist was taken to Spohn Memorial for medical treatment with non-life threatening injuries. He was issued a citation for Disregarding a Traffic Control Device.
Please remember, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers. They must travel in the same direction as vehicle traffic, stop for red lights, stop signs, and obey all traffic laws.
Occurred on 5/29/12, 2:53 a.m. Hit and Run Pedestrian Fatality 10200 IH 37, Northbound Access C1204092
Early this morning Corpus Christi Police and Fire Units responded to 10300 IH 37, eastbound access for a Hit and Run accident investigation in which a 39-year-old man was fatally injured. The initial investigation has indicated that the man was walking along the access road pushing a bicycle when he was struck. The man’s 40-year-old brother who was accompanying him was uninjured. The vehicle fled the scene.
The fatality is being investigated by the Traffic Division’s Hit and Run Unit. Anyone with any information on this crime is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS or the Traffic Division’s Hit and Run Unit at 361-886-2690.

Officers responded to 1300 Espinosa Street for a shooting call with a victim being shot in the head. Upon their arrival, Officers contacted the 13-year-old boy’s father who told them their neighbor had shot his son in the head with a BB gun. The teenager was treated by CCFD Emergency Personnel for an embedded BB in his head and taken to Spohn Memorial for treatment.
Officers discovered the neighbor, Luis Velasco (12/03/56) became upset when the juvenile kicked him when he asked to stop bothering him. Velasco grabbed his bb gun and shot at the victim, striking him in the forehead. Officers arrested Luis Velasco (12/03/56) and charged him with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
Occurred Saturday, May 26, 2012, 7:50 pm, Missing child, 4208 Wandering Creek, 1205260143
A 4-year-old girl returned safe two hours after she was reported missing from her home on the 4200 block of Wandering Creek Drive Saturday night.
A 28-year-old woman said she woke to discover her 4-year-old daughter missing. The woman said the front door was unlocked, but closed and the last time she saw her child was at 5:30 that afternoon.
The response to find the missing child included the Corpus Christi Police Department, the Nueces County Constables, and the Annaville Volunteer Fire Department. Many local residents arrived and offered to help in the search having heard of the missing child on social media.
The grandmother and the 4-year-old child arrived at the home on Wandering Creek at about 9:40pm. The grandmother had consent to take the child and there was a communication error which caused confusion concerning the location of the child. The child was unharmed and no criminal complaints were made in relation to this event.
Corpus Christi Police Robbery/Homicide Investigators have obtained warrants for arrest for two individuals this week for aggravated robbery.
Roye Bernal (5/1/1990) is wanted for the aggravated robbery at the Jiffy X-press Wash on Prescott last Monday, May, 21. His last known address is 1445 18th Street in Corpus Christi. Case #1205210091
Joseph Turley (10/7/1987) is wanted for the aggravated robbery on May 12 on the 300 block of Mesquite Street. Case #1205120029

The Corpus Christi Police Department celebrated the graduation of five Metrocom Technicians Friday. Metrocom is the call center for the emergency services of Nueces County. Metrocom receives calls from individuals who need assistance from police officers, fire fighters, and Emergency Medical Services. The calls are prioritized and then resources are dispatched to provide the needed service. Metrocom is housed at the Corpus Christi Police Department building and is responsible for the direction of all emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
The Metrocom training is a 6 week classroom course which consists of a Telecommunications Certification Course, Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center certification, basic dispatching skills by use of the Computer Aided Dispatch system, Intergraph, city geography, and police codes.

Corpus Christi Police Financial Crimes Investigators would like help from the public to provide additional information about a man who passed counterfeit money at the Saratoga Lanes Bowling Alley.
The same person passed fake money to pay for services at the bowling alley on more than one occasion, and each time has been Tuesday nights. The man is a white male that has a beard and appears to be in his late teens or early 20’s in age. The man wore a long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.
The man was with a second man and a woman at the time of this crime. The second man had long hair a sleeve tattoo on his right arm and wore a green t-shirt, khaki cargo shorts, and sandals.
The man is suspected of Forgery of a Government Instrument, a second degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Two auto burglars were arrested after several complaints were received for two men burglarizing unlocked vehicles as they walked down the 3600 block of Pecan. One caller confronted the men, while another caller followed them to a nearby apartment complex and called police.
Officers J. Wicks and E. Hemping searched for the two men who were described as heavy-set White males in their late teens to early twenties. They were accompanied by a white and brown dog. Officers were told the men had entered the Brawner Park Apartment complex and a search for the suspects ensued. A short time later, the Officers saw the dog on the top of the stairwell.
As the Officers walked up the stairs, they found Valentin Aleman Jr. (07/16/92) and Daniel Griffin (02/28/92) sorting their stolen loot. Both men were detained and taken to the Criminal Investigation Division for interviews.
Aleman and Griffin were arrested and booked at the City Detention Center. They were both charged with three different counts of Burglary of a Vehicle.

Chief Floyd Simpson today announced the promotion of Captain John Houston to the position of Commander, effective Monday May 28th. Houston fills the vacancy created by the recent promotions of Commanders Mark Schauer and Mike Markle to Assistant Chief, and will join current Commanders Heidi Frese, Santiago Escalante, and Todd Green. Captain Houston is a 32-year veteran of the CCPD and is currently in charge of the Department’s Training Division. Captain Houston has extensive experience within the department, serving as a patrol officer, narcotics investigator, and on the DEA task force. As a supervisor, Captain Houston has served in the Uniform Division as a Field Lieutenant and District Captain, as Uniform Division Executive Officer, as Criminal Investigation Division Executive Officer, and as Narcotics Vice Investigations Division Executive Officer. He is scheduled to graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in June from St. Leo’s University, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, one of the country’s most prestigious training schools for Police Managers. A promotion ceremony will be held at 8:15 AM Tuesday May 29th in the Chief’s Conference Room at Police Headquarters.
Coinciding with his announcement of Captain Houston’s promotion, Chief Simpson today unveiled the department’s new organizational structure. As previously outlined by Chief Simpson, this new organizational structure divides the Department into three separate Bureaus; Operations, Investigations, and Administration, each commanded by an Assistant Chief. Assistant Chief Jesse Garcia will be in charge of the Operations Bureau, Assistant Chief Mark Schauer will supervise the Administration Bureau, and Assistant Chief Mike Markle will head up the Operations Bureau. This structure groups units with similar functions and goals under the same command and will ensure that important operations such as recruiting and training will are given the attention they deserve. The new organizational structure takes effect Monday June 4th, in order to provide everyone with sufficient time to transition into their new positions. Effective on that date, Commander Frese will take over the Uniform Division, Commander Escalante will assume command of the Criminal Investigations Division, Commander Green will transition to the Commander of Support Services, and Commander Houston will take charge of the newly created Personnel Development Division. Chief Simpson stated that he strongly believes this new organizational structure will maximize the talents of the department’s work force, provide for consistent, cohesive leadership, and ensure accountability at all levels of the organization.

Officers responding to a drowning climbed over a fence to reach the dock where a man and woman were in the water. As they reached the dock they observed a security guard holding on to the woman. Officers and the security guard assisted the woman from the water.
The man was pulled out of the water by Officers and CCFD Emergency Personnel and administered CPR. He was rushed to Spohn Shoreline where he died.
Further investigation revealed the couple had climbed over the locked gate and were sitting on the dock drinking. The man unexpectedly jumped into the water and did not resurface. The woman entered the water in search of the man and began calling for help when she did not find him. A security guard heard her yelling and hurried to help her.
The investigation is ongoing, but at this time, there appears to be no foul play involved.
