The C.C.P.D.’s commitment to “Keep Corpus Christi Safe” has continued with its
“Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative”

On Saturday, May 5, 2012, a total of 53 cars, trucks, and motorcycles will be auctioned at the Corpus Christi Police Department new Vehicle Impound Lot located at 5485 Greenwood Drive during our monthly auction. The new site has four paved acres for an auction lot. 

Approximately 13 of these vehicles are “No Insurance” impounds. On Friday, May 4, 2012, the general public will be allowed to register and view the vehicles to be auctioned from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no registration fee.

On the day of the auction, the general public can continue to register and view the vehicles from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The auction will commence promptly at 10:00 a.m. The vehicles to be auctioned can be viewed at www.siskauction.com. An auction list may also be downloaded from the same website.

The department’s strong stand and enforcement of this “Zero Tolerance No Insurance Initiative” will continue and all vehicles involved in accidents will be impounded and the driver cited if they are unable to provide financial proof of insurance. Driver’s license and proof of financial responsibility checkpoints will continue to be conducted at the Shift Captains’ authorization.

Officers issued 5,508 citations and impounded 1,212 vehicles for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility during 2011. During April 2012, Officers issued 319 citations for Failure to Maintain Financial Responsibility and impounded 56 vehicles for the same charge.

Man Robbed During Dice Game

A 43-year-old victim was taken to Bay Area Hospital by his wife after he was assaulted during a dice game.  The victim reported to Officers he was playing dice at Williams Park with several friends when was attacked.  He  told Officers he was counting his money when a Black male attacked him,  punching him in the face and head, knocking him out.

The suspect took the victim’s money, wallet, and cellphone after he was assaulted.  The victim called his wife to pick him and take him to hospital where he was treated for contusions to his face and head.

Officers checked the park for the suspect, but he was nowhere to be found.  The suspect is described as a 37-year-old Black male who is an acquaintance to the victim.

Intoxicated Man Ejected From A Party Returns To Shoot At Party Guests

A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning after chasing and shooting at several people, then running from police.

A host of a party asked 19-year-old David Ovalle (12/7/1992) to leave the party after Ovalle became intoxicated. Ovalle went home which is located one street away from the party and returned with a pistol. Ovalle discharged the handgun at the house which sent those at the party to flee. Ovalle pointed his gun as chased three people into a nearby apartment complex.

Corpus Christi Police Officers arrived and chased Ovalle until Ovalle was apprehended. No person was injured in the event. Police seized the loaded pistol and delivered Ovalle to the city detention center.

Ovalle was arrested for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine), Evading Arrest (a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine), and for Public Intoxication (a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine).

Intoxicated Men Use Poor Judgement For A Place To Discharge A Firearm

Three men were arrested Sunday morning for discharging a firearm inside the city limits outside a mobile home in Flour Bluff.

Corpus Christi Police were called to the 500 block of Crayton for a complaint of group of men that discharged a firearm in a mobile home park. Corpus Christi Police Officers located a group of three men that were seated around a table outside 554 Crayton.

A witness identified the three men as taking turns shooting pistols over a dozen times. Officers discovered the three men, 44-year-old Juan Bolivar (2/15/1968), 45-year-old Eduardo Lazaro (9/1/1966), and 27-year-old Charles Bolivar (2/16/1985), were intoxicated and took turns shooting at opossums and a stump in front of their mobile home.

Evidence was collected then the three men were arrested and delivered to the city detention center for Discharging a Firearm inside a Municipality. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine.

Stop The Texts This May 1st

Texting and Driving is not multi-tasking; it’s essentially driving blind.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, The National Highway Safety Administration, and State Farm Insurance conducted a study which revealed that nearly 500,000 people were injured and over 5,000 were killed in 2009 due to various forms of distracted driving, including texting while driving.

The Ad Council, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the State Attorneys General are hosting a nationwide STOP THE TEXTS Day on May 1st to spread awareness about the risks of distracted driving.  More than a third of young adults say they have been involved in a near crash because of their own or someone else’s distracted driving, according to the Pew Research Center in 2010.

According to the Ad Council, 82% of drivers ages 16-24 said they have texted while driving; 85% of young adults who text while driving agree that texting is a problem; and 77% of young adult drivers are very confident they can safely text while driving.

The Corpus Christi Police Department encourages all drivers to operate their vehicle safely. Focus on a single task and avoid distracted driving. The risk is too great for any benefit of a text message. Stop The Texts this May 1st.

Customer Found A Cop When One Was Needed

A 20-year-old man was arrested Saturday night for unlawfully carrying a pistol at a local restaurant.

A Corpus Christi Police Officer at a downtown fast food restaurant was told by a customer that she saw a man with a pistol who wore a black t-shirt and a cap. The officer confronted the man and discovered a loaded 9mm pistol in the man’s waistband. The man with the pistol did not have a concealed handgun license issued to him. The officer checked the serial number on the pistol and discovered the pistol was stolen from a Corpus Christi home in June 2011.

20-year-old Jon Pruneda (2/20/1992) was arrested for Unlawful Carrying of Weapons and for Theft of a Firearm then delivered to the city detention center. The Unlawful Carrying of Weapons charge is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine. The Theft of a Firearm charge is a State Jail Felony punishable by up to 2 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Help Apprehend Jaime Clark

The U.S. Marshals request help from the public to locate 36-year-old Jaime Clark (4/26/1976). Clark has a warrant for arrest for a motion to revoke probation for sexual assault of a child. Clarks last known address is 4613 Branscomb Drive in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Clark is described as a Hispanic male, 5’10” 215 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes and has a tattoo on his left shoulder and a tattoo on the right side of his neck. Clark was last employed as a painter.

Local Man Arrested, Charged with Possession of Child Pornography

On 4/26/12, Detectives with the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force culminated an investigation into the possession of child pornography with the arrest of Vaughn Warner 12/29/94. 

Detectives were able to proactively determine that Warner was in possession of child pornography.  A search warrant was served at Warner’s home and he was subsequently arrested for Possession of Child Pornography.  Warner was booked into the Nueces County Jail and has since been released on a $15,000 bond.

Stand-Off Ends Peacefully

Shortly before noon, the Police Department received information about a female possibly being held hostage.  Officers arrived to find the victim outside, but she denied being threatened, assaulted, or held hostage. 

While Officers were talking to the female, her 21-year-old boyfriend threatened to harm himself and locked himself inside the apartment.  Officers on scene requested the assistance of the SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Teams who were able to persuade the male to walk out of the apartment and surrender to Officers.  The male who was unharmed was taken to Spohn Memorial for medical evaluation.

As a precaution, several residents of the Christy Wood Apartments were evacuated, but allowed to return home shortly after the stand-off ended.

Motorcylist Hospitalized, 22-Year-Old Charged with Intoxication Assault

Officers investigating a collision at SH 286 southbound over Tarlton arrived to find the driver of a Harley Davidson seriously injured.  Witnesses reported to Officers they were traveling alongside the motorcyclist when a white Suburban struck the motorcyclist from behind, ejecting the driver when it flipped over.

The 51-year-old motorcyclist was immediately rushed to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency personnel where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with severe head trauma and multiple lacerations to his body.  The victim was listed in serious condition and there is no update to his condition at this time.

The driver of the Suburban fled the collision scene without providing assistance or summoning police. A witness to the accident followed the suspect to the area of Prescott and Tarlton where he was involved in another accident, striking a fire hydrant.   The witness continued to follow the suspect after he abandoned his vehicle and ran to the Stripes Convenience Store, 3102 Ayers Street. 

When Officers found the suspect he appeared to be intoxicated and was taken to the area of Prescott and Tarlton Streets.  He was administered Standard Field Sobriety Tests and a Blood Draw was taken.

Christian Cardenas (01/20/90) who was not injured was arrested and charged with Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle and Accident Involving Injury.  He was also charged with Failure to Control Speed.

The Police Department would like to thank everyone who stopped to help the victim and provided valuable information which led to the  apprehension of the suspect responsible for this terrible accident.
