Man Claims Masked Gunman Steals, Wrecks Rental Car

A 34 year-old man told officers that his rental car, wallet and jewelry were stolen from him by a gun-wielding masked man.  The victim told officers that he was driving home when he saw a man lying on the roadway on the 3200 block of Crestridge Drive.  According to the victim, when he got out to check on the man lying in the street, the suspect jumped to his feet and pointed a handgun at him.  The victim told officers that the suspect was dressed completely in black clothing and wearing a black ski mask. The suspect stole his wallet with a small amount of cash, several items of jewelry, and the victim’s rental car, a 2010 Chevy Impala.  Minutes later, officers responded to a hit and run accident on the 2800 block of Riggan Street. Officers there discovered that the stolen Impala had struck a 2000 Toyota Camry.  The 35 year-old driver of the Camry told officers that she and her two passengers had just gotten into the Camry and were about to pull away from the curb when they were struck almost head-on by the stolen Impala.  The driver and her passengers told officers that the driver of the Impala then fled the scene on foot.  The only description they could provide was that he was a male. The victim’s wallet was located in the Impala minus the cash. The jewelry was not recovered.  A passenger in the Camry complained of minor injuries, and was treated at the scene by medics, but was not transported to the hospital.

Fight Over Woman Ends in Stabbing

Officers responding to a reported stabbing found the victim at the corner of Comanche and Tancahua Streets. The 28-year-old man, who had been stabbed in the lower left abdomen,  told officers that he and another man, Samuel Flores (DOB: 7/23/1968), had been fighting over a woman. The victim then told officers that Flores stabbed him in the side with a small pocket knife during the fight.  The man was taken to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital by ambulance for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

A short time later, officers located Flores downtown.  Flores was still in possession of the knife.  Flores was arrested for aggravated assault and transported the City Detention Center.

Theft From Taqueria Jalisco

Corpus Christi Property Crimes Investigators are asking for help to identify a man who stole money from the Taqueria Jalisco Restaurant on Cimarron on Monday, February 13, 2012.

The cashier for the restaurant was provided an envelope with cash which was placed by the register near the front door to the business. The cashier turned away momentarily and the envelope disappeared. The video camera surveillance system was reviewed and the person that stole the envelope was seen on the video recording. The man who took the envelope is described as a white male with dark hair and wore a black jacket. The man took the envelope that contained the money, concealed the envelope inside his jacket, then he left the business.

Corpus Christi Property Crimes Investigators need your help to identify the woman who stole over $1,200 worth of sunglasses from the Sunglass Hut store in the La Palmera Mall.

The woman is described as a Hispanic female with long straight black hair and wore a tan shirt with blue jean pants. The woman had a gold shoulder bag and carried three shopping bags in her hand. The woman stole several pairs of sunglasses and her image was captured on the video camera recording system inside the store. Store employees have asked for help to identify this woman so that criminal charges may be pursued.

Investigators with the Property Crimes Unit need your help identifying the individual seen in this video.  He is believed to have stolen a wallet.

On Saturday February 4, 2012 shortly after 3:00pm, an elderly customer left his wallet on the counter and walked off after he paid for his items.

He did not realize his wallet was missing until later that evening.  He called Wal-Mart and asked security personal if someone had turned in the wallet.

Security personal took the extra step and checked their security video in order to locate the customers wallet.  The Wal-Mart security personnel discovered that the wallet was picked up by another individual, who left with the wallet.

The individual is described as a white male in his early twenties, clean-shaven, with a shaved head. At the time of the theft he was wearing a black jacket with Georgia across the chest and faded jeans. 

The car in the video is the car the man left the store in.  Although the licence plate is visible, the Police Department have been unable to identify all the numbers and letters.

Dogs alert police to a burglar

A person that called police for dogs barking nearby led police to capture a burglar in the act. Police were called to the 800 block of Derry at 12:40 in the morning because alert dogs barked repeatedly. Police were led to the 5800 block of Skyline by the sound of the barking dogs where two men walked the dark street. Police contacted the men and noticed a nervous nature about the men. Police found a G.P.S. device in the pocket of one of the men which was unusual because the man with the G.P.S. in his pocket said he does not own a car.

Police found two vehicles nearby that had the interior contents ransacked. The owner of both the ransacked vehicles was notified and the vehicle owner reported a G.P.S. missing from inside the vehicle. The officer’s suspicion was confirmed that the G.P.S. did not belong to the man walking the street.

Seventeen year old Juan Fuentes (4/21/1994)was arrested for burglary to a motor vehicle and criminal mischief.  The second man was released at the scene.

            On February 21, 2012, the Corpus Christi Police Department spearheaded a multi-agency ‘Round-Up’ of wanted gang members.  The ‘Round-Up,’ organized by the Corpus Christi Police Gang Unit, was a concerted effort by numerous local law enforcement agencies to take gang members off the street in an effort to reduce crime, the fear of crime, and enhance public safety.

            The plan started over a month ago, when Gang Unit Captain Donnie Mersing asked the CCPD Crime Analysis and Tactical Intelligence Center (CATIC) to compile a list of wanted Corpus Christi Gang Members.  The list included 122 names.  As the list was being put together, some gang members were arrested immediately, based on a need to keep Corpus Christi safe; and others were arrested out of the course of routine business.  It was also determined that 23 of the wanted gang members were already in jail or prison on other charges.  The final list for the ‘Round-Up’ included the names of 93 gang members.

            About 70 Law Enforcement Officials participated in the ‘Round-Up’ during its first day of operation and apprehended 12 gang members and 7 other individuals.  In addition to the initial warrants, charges on the gang members and the other individuals include: Controlled Substance, Possession of Dangerous Drugs, Failure to Identify, Public Intoxication, and Municipal Court Warrants.

            The ‘Round-Up’ also yielded a search warrant based on information found during one of the arrests.  The search warrant produced 8 guns, suspected cocaine, marijuana, and over $7000.00 cash.  The search warrant was executed at 2538 Dunbar, the same location that Jose Garcia 7/18/1985 was arrested.

One gang member, likely with knowledge of the ‘Round-Up,’ turned himself into the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office yesterday.  He is Larry Torres 6/10/1977.

The Corpus Christi PIO Office will provide further information on the ‘Round-Up’ results over the next few days.

Overnight Robber Arrested

 Officers responded to an overnight robbery at the Stripes store at 3302 Baldwin.  A local Green-N-Go Taxi Driver observed the robbery in progress and quickly called the police.  Prior to Officers arriving at the store, the robber left the store, got into a car, and drove away.  The taxi driver followed in the taxi.

When the two cars stopped at a red light at Baldwin and Cortez, the taxi driver exited the cab and told the robber to get out of his car. The robber was armed with a knife that was displayed during the robbery, but the robber complied with the taxi drivers demand to wait for police to arrive.

The robber was identified as John Gillespie 12/17/1983.  He was arrested and taken to jail.

Robber Strikes Three Times Within Hours

Officers were called to 1601 Agnes the Stripes Store for a robbery.  The suspect was holding a stick and demanded the money from the register. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a black beanie, flannel shirt/jacket with a hood and camouflage shorts.  The suspect also demanded the store clerk’s wallet, but when the clerk stated he didn’t have a wallet, the suspect settled for a carton of cigarettes and the money from the store. The suspect was barefooted and left running on Brownlee.

The same suspect did another robbery at the Stripes Store located at 4101 Highway 181 at approximately 02:06 AM. This time the suspect was holding a hammer and demanded money from the cash register. The suspect wearing the same clothes from the earlier robbery also wanted the clerk’s wallet. This time the suspect got away with the store’s money and the clerk’s wallet. Again the suspect left on foot.

At 3:05 AM The Portland Police Department responded to a robbery at the Snappy Foods Store in their city. The same description was provided for the suspect in that robbery.

Prison Bus Crash on IH 37

Seven people were taken to the hospital as the result of a four vehicle crash that involved a bus that carried prisoners on the controlled access freeway of Interstate Highway 37 Tuesday morning. The bus was in transit from the Nueces County Jail enroute to Beeville when the front of the bus collided with three other passenger cars. There was road construction ahead which reduced the lanes of travel causing the traffic to slow when the bus struck the three other vehicles.

Two people from passenger cars were taken by ambulance immediately with non-life threatening injuries. The thirty one inmates of the Texas Department of Corrections were all individually evaluated by medics at the scene as they were loaded onto a second bus to take them to their destination. Three guards and two inmates from the prison transport bus were taken to the hospital for precautionary treatment. The remainder of the inmates were taken to Beeville and evaluated a second time for any injuries.
