Safety Tips: Stay Alert!!

Jugging is a term used to describe a crime in which someone carrying money is followed from one location to another. Typically, victims are followed from banks to another location and the offender either burglarizes the victim’s vehicle or robs them.

Jugging Safety Tips

CCPD wants to spread awareness of this crime and recommends following these safety tips:

  1. Always be vigilant of your surroundings and stay alert, especially when withdrawing money from your bank or ATM. If something looks suspicious or you feel you are being followed, call the police.
  2. If you are transporting large sums of money, do not make any detours or stops en route to your destination. Get your money to a safe and secure location as quickly as you can.
  3.  Always keep your money in an envelope or secure bag and on you at all times. Never leave your money in your vehicle, especially if it is in plain sight. If criminals are jugging you, a smash and grab is very common.
  4. Be on the lookout for individuals backed into parking spaces, who do not exit their vehicle to conduct business.
  5. Be vigilant when using ATMs, as they typically target individuals using ATMs. Also, individuals leaving the branch should exercise caution as they could also be targeted.
  6. Be vigilant when arriving and departing. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t leave your car or the building if you observe suspicious vehicles parked in or around the parking lot.
  7. Conceal your money before you leave the bank/credit union.
  8. Don’t openly carry bank bags, envelopes or coin boxes.
  9. Watch for people following you.
  10. If you think you are being targeted/followed, call 911 and keep the dispatcher on the line to describe your location, where you are headed, etc. and keep driving until a marked police car finds you.
  11. Make banking the last stop of your errands.

Again pay attention to your surroundings, stay alert and if you feel you are being targeted call 911.

Emergency Alert Program Overview
The City of Corpus Christi and Nueces County have partnered to provide an emergency alert program for citizens.  The system allows officials to alert you depending on the preferences you chose. When signing up residents enter their contact information and subscribe to notifications, they want to receive based on location. The information residents provide is protected and will not be used for any other purpose.

How It Works
When officials issue a notification about a potential safety hazard, concern, or threat, residents will receive a message on the voice or text communication method they have registered. A key feature of the system is the ability to confirm receipt of the alert. If residents opt for the confirmation feature the alert system will continue to attempt to contact through subsequent notification methods until a confirmation is received. This feature is optional.

Sign Up for Notifications
Residents can create an account by adding contact information, location and notification preferences. All information provided will be kept confidential.

Stop Receiving Notifications
Residents can stop receiving alerts or modifying their preferences at any time by removing contact information.

For more information and to sign up for reverse alerts visit the Corpus Christi City web page at https://www.cctexas.com/services/public-safety/alerts-notices

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES IN TELEPHONE REPORTING UNIT

In an effort to provide superior service to our community, the Corpus Christi Police Department will be adding additional resources to our telephone reporting unit on the weekends.

The police department will continue to utilize the telephone reporting unit for all not in progress report calls. What this means, is that calls that are not in progress, where there is no imminent danger, where there is no felony type offense being committed, crimes that do not involve criminal acts against minor children, crimes that do not involve sexual contact, or burglaries to a building or residence, will be handled by an officer via telephone.

After gathering the particulars of your call, if your complaint is identified as a not in progress report call, the dispatcher will log your information into our system and a police officer will call you back to assist you with your report. The time and date for the return call will be identified by the dispatcher.

These additional resources are being made in an effort to maintain good service and to reduce the response time for in progress calls.

We hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Ways to protect your equipment

The Auto Theft Task Force has a few safety tips to protect your fleet inventory:

-Ensure all cameras, alarms and lighting are working properly.
-Don’t assume that fences and gates provide a complete barrier to adjoining businesses and vacant land. Walk your fence line to be sure everything is intact.
-Move light or highly targeted equipment into service bays and away from the fence.
-Do not stage machines and trucks in a way that they provide cover to thieves.
-Don’t leave ANYTHING on a trailer. Secure any trailers, whether loaded or not, so that thieves cannot use them to steal your equipment.

Review your fleet inventory before locking up to enjoy the weekend!

Happy Memorial Day and thank you to all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. #IfYouLikeItLockIt
