Local artist Patrick Richards of Architectural Details donated his talent in order to enhance the hallway leading into the MetroCom Communication’s Center. The mural displays the MetroCom’s Mission in order to remind our team of MetroCom’s principles and values on a daily basis.

Patrick Richards is President and Owner of Architectural Details. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art specializing in Advertising Graphic Design from Sam Houston State University in 1986. After traveling the world and working as an apprentice for the famous muralist Richard Haas, Mr. Richards was inspired to bring murals to the interior of people’s homes. Animal Care Services Investigates Animal Cruelty Case

On or about Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Animal Care Services became aware of a female pit-bull named “Petey” that was unresponsive in her backyard.  The owner of the dog solicited assistance from a Facebook acquaintance and they took the dog to a local veterinarian. The vet recommended treatment, however the treatment exceeded the owner’s funds.  The owner then took the dog to a second veterinarian, however the dog died enroute.

During this process, the acquaintance posted the information and photos on an animal rights Facebook page, suggesting/alleging animal neglect/cruelty.  No person having actual contact with the animal officially reported the alleged neglect/abuse directly to the proper authorities (i.e. Animal Care Services or the Police Department) until the animal was at the veterinarian office and an email from a concerned citizen was sent to ACS management.

On Thursday, March 20th, Animal Care Services obtained the remains of the dog and a necropsy was performed on Friday, March 21.  The veterinarian report indicated that the dog may have died of inadequate care.

Animal Care Services investigated this case and has now turned it over to CCPD Investigators for possible filing of criminal charges.

Chief and POA President Thank Corpus Christi

Thank You Corpus Christi!

I cannot thank the citizens of Corpus Christi enough for their outpouring of concern, well wishes, thoughts and prayers for our two injured Officers. Our department’s strength comes from the support of our community and the effectiveness of our members. I can see that we have an abundance of both. As a Police Chief, I cannot ask for much more than that.

As for my Officers, they are trained and given tools to survive in situations such as the shooting on Congressional. The tools that were available, for immediate medical care, were vital to the survival of our two Officers. I, along with the CC Police Officers’ Association President Scott Leeton, say thank you to our Crime Control District Board, the Corpus Christi Police Foundation and our Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association. Over the years these organizations have funded much-needed items for our Officers that are not in our yearly budget.  From flashlights to knives and the “Go Bag” that was utilized yesterday, they have greatly enhanced our opportunity to better serve our community. We will continue to do so and hope that our partnership will grow with our citizens and our police organizations.

Thank you again,

Floyd Simpson – Chief of Police and  Scott Leeton – President, Police Officers’ Association

Learn The Facts About Murine Typhus – Press Release

Press Release:

Contact Person:  Dr. William Burgin, Jr., M.D. Local Health Authority, Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District, phone : 361-633-1324

HEALTH DISTRICT ADVISES RESIDENTS:  “LEARN THE FACTS ABOUT MURINE TYPHUS”

The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District is advising residents to learn the facts about murine typhus.

Murine typhus, also called typhus or endemic typhus, is a rickettsial disease caused by the organism Rickettsia typhi. Most of the murine typhus cases in Texas occur in South Texas from Nueces County southward to the Rio Grande Valley, but a few cases are reported in other parts of the state each year.

According to William Burgin, Jr., M.D., Local Healthy Authority, “Rats and their fleas are the natural reservoirs, and other animals such as opossums and domestic cats, may also be reservoirs for fleas that can transmit typhus.”

Health officials advise that fleas, such as the rat flea and the cat flea are the most common vectors (animals that transfer the disease from one host to another) of typhus.

“Typhus is easily treatable,” states Dr. Burgin.  “And you can only get typhus once in your lifetime.”

Symptoms of the disease include headache, fever, nausea, and body aches. Five or six days after the initial symptoms, you may get a rash that starts on the trunk of your body and spreads to your arms and legs. If left untreated, the disease may last for several months. A doctor can conduct tests to tell you if you have typhus.

If you suspect that you have murine typhus, see a doctor.  Typhus is easily treated with certain antibiotics.
