Man Arrested Operating An Unlicensed Taxi Service

The Corpus Christi Police conducted an undercover operation in order to take enforcement action against taxi cab services that are not licensed by the city.

Corpus Christi Police obtained information of a cab company in Corpus Christi that charged $10 fares and did not have proper permits from the city. The permits for vehicles for hire are regulated by the municipal code chapter 57. The permits are required for uniform safety standards which include vehicle safety standards, driver quality, and taxi meter fare standard practices.

June 4, 2012, an undercover police officer called a number provided on a business card found at a Corpus Christi night club that advertised flat rate $10 cab rides. The officer was met by 24-year-old Jairius Duncan-Pollard (2/12/1988) in a red 2011 Suzuki 4 door sedan. The Suzuki was not marked as a cab, had no fare meter, and did not have any display to identify the driver or any cab company. The officer paid for the ride and then the Suzuki was stopped on a traffic stop to identify the driver and seek opportunity for the driver to produce the license and permits required for cab service in the city.

Duncan-Pollard was operating as a cab in the city without the permits required. Duncan-Pollard was cited for the same violations on May 25, 2012, and had not complied with the requirements to obtain permits. Duncan-Pollard was arrested for No Taxi Vehicle Permit and No Taxicab License. The Suzuki was impounded and Duncan-Pollard was delivered to the city detention center.

The public should be aware to hire only reputable cab companies that permanently display the cab company name on the vehicle, have a fare meter, and display the identity of the driver. These requirements are in place for the safety of the public. If a person calls for cab service and does not see the clear identification of a cab company, the fare meter, and the identity of the driver displayed, the person should not get into the vehicle. Unlicensed cab services could be an opportunity for a predator to take a victim to a vulnerable place to conduct criminal activity. Call police to report any unlicensed cab service.

Man Attempted To Steal Car When Owner Opened The Door

A 35-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he attempted to take a car while a 39-year-old man loaded merchandise in the car.

A 39-year-old man and his 14-year-old son were unharmed after 35-year-old Jose Gonzales (9/10/1976) attempted to take a maroon 1998 Subaru Forrester car without permission while a 14-year-old boy was inside the car.

A 14-year-old boy waited inside the car while a 39-year-old man went into the store. The 39-year-old came out from a convenience store and saw Gonzales leaned against the passenger side of the car. The 39-year-old man opened the driver’s side rear door to load merchandise in the car and Gonzales ran around and jumped into the open back door into the back seat of the car. Gonzales then climbed into the driver seat and attempted to put the vehicle in gear. The 39-year-old pulled Gonzales from the driver’s seat while the 14-year-old was inside the car.

Gonzales then ran away while the 39-year-old man provided police the description of Gonzales. Corpus Christi Police Officers located Gonzales on the 4600 block of Larkspur. Gonzales was arrested for two municipal court warrants for failing to appear to court and Gonzales was also charged with the attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Investigating officers believe Gonzales may have been under the influence of illegal drugs which would have contributed to irrational behavior. Police suggest always having situational awareness and being alert for possible danger.  Make others aware of your boundaries and tell people they have come too close to you or make you feel uncomfortable. Call police immediately if there is a suspicious person in the parking lot.

The night of Wednesday, May 16, 2012, a man woke to his dogs barks. The man investigated and discovered the external unit to his central air conditioner unit was damaged. The man also saw that his neighbor’s external air conditioner unit was missing.

The value of the damage and the cost of a new external air conditioner unit is estimated at about $5,000.

North Beach Restaurant Robbery Suspect Arrested In San Antonio

David G. Vasquez Jr. (D.O.B. 09-12-85), , the man wanted for a brutal attack on a Corpus Christi woman late last year,  was apprehended in San Antonio Thursday afternoon by officers with the San Antonio Police Department.

On November 9, 2011 a 30 year-old waitress was walking to her car after completing her work shift at a restaurant on Corpus Christi Beach when she grabbed from behind by an unknown man.   The suspect, who was armed with a knife, viciously assaulted the woman when she refused to leave the parking lot with him.   The suspect then fled in the victim’s car, leaving her behind severely beaten in the restaurant’s parking lot.  Her car was later found floating in the Inner Harbor of Corpus Christi Bay.  The suspect, despite an intensive search of the area by officers, was not found.

Corpus Christi Police Department Robbery Detectives assigned to the case submitted evidence found at the scene of the attack to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab.  Earlier this week,  Detectives were informed that DNA obtained from the crime scene matched that of a known offender from San Antonio.  As a result, Corpus Christi Police Department Robbery Detectives on Wednesday obtained an arrest warrant for  Vasquez, charging him with Aggravated Robbery.  CCPD Detectives worked closely with their counterparts at the San Antonio Police Department, as well as the San Antonio Regional Intelligence Center (SARIC), to locate Vasquez.

26 Arrested At Party In Vacant House

Twenty six people were arrested for criminal trespass and several other charges after a party with minors in vacant house on Santa Ana Street was busted by Corpus Christi Police Tuesday morning.

Corpus Christi Police were called to the 3000 block of Santa Ana Street for a disturbance. Officers discovered people inside a vacant house with a broken window and trespass warnings. Officers contacted the property owner by telephone and verified no person had permission to be inside the home. Officers then contacted 26 people inside the home.

Officers discovered a large quantity of alcoholic beverages and an amount of marijuana inside the home. Two people inside the home were of legal drinking age. There were 23 adults from age 17 to 21 years of age arrested and delivered to the city detention center. There were 3 juveniles taken to the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center.

All were arrested for Criminal Trespass in a Habitation, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine. Several of those arrested face a variety of other criminal charges.

$13,500 In Tools Taken From Kolda Elementary

Corpus Christi Police are investigating a case in which Tools and construction materials valued at about $13,500 were taken from the Zachary Kolda Elementary School over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Zachary Kolda Elementary School is a new school under construction in the Corpus Christi School District and is located at 3730 Roddfield Road between Saratoga Boulevard and Yorktown. Construction crews arrived Tuesday morning and discovered forced entry into the building and the tools missing. The building is in the early stages of construction. The padlock was cut for the storage boxes in the building which held the power tools.

Police collected several bits of evidence at the scene.

4 Year Old Missing Child Returned Safe

A 4-year-old girl returned safe two hours after she was reported missing from her home on the 4200 block of Wandering Creek Drive Saturday night.

A 28-year-old woman said she woke to discover her 4-year-old daughter missing. The woman said the front door was unlocked, but closed and the last time she saw her child was at 5:30 that afternoon.

The response to find the missing child included the Corpus Christi Police Department, the Nueces County Constables, and the Annaville Volunteer Fire Department. Many local residents arrived and offered to help in the search having heard of the missing child on social media.

The grandmother and the 4-year-old child arrived at the home on Wandering Creek at about 9:40pm. The grandmother had consent to take the child and there was a communication error which caused confusion concerning the location of the child. The child was unharmed and no criminal complaints were made in relation to this event.

Corpus Christi Police Robbery/Homicide Investigators have obtained warrants for arrest for two individuals this week for aggravated robbery.

Roye Bernal (5/1/1990) is wanted for the aggravated robbery at the Jiffy X-press Wash on Prescott last Monday, May, 21. His last known address is 1445 18th Street in Corpus Christi. Case #1205210091

Joseph Turley (10/7/1987) is wanted for the aggravated robbery on May 12 on the 300 block of Mesquite Street. Case #1205120029

Metrocom Training Academy 2012-43 Graduates

The Corpus Christi Police Department celebrated the graduation of five Metrocom Technicians Friday. Metrocom is the call center for the emergency services of Nueces County. Metrocom receives calls from individuals who need assistance from police officers, fire fighters, and Emergency Medical Services. The calls are prioritized and then resources are dispatched to provide the needed service. Metrocom is housed at the Corpus Christi Police Department building and is responsible for the direction of all emergency services 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

The Metrocom training is a 6 week classroom course which consists of a Telecommunications Certification Course, Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center certification, basic dispatching skills by use of the Computer Aided Dispatch system, Intergraph, city geography, and police codes.

Bowler Sought In Counterfeit Crime

Corpus Christi Police Financial Crimes Investigators would like help from the public to provide additional information about a man who passed counterfeit money at the Saratoga Lanes Bowling Alley.

The same person passed fake money to pay for services at the bowling alley on more than one occasion, and each time has been Tuesday nights. The man is a white male that has a beard and appears to be in his late teens or early 20’s in age. The man wore a long sleeve shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.

The man was with a second man and a woman at the time of this crime. The second man had long hair a sleeve tattoo on his right arm and wore a green t-shirt, khaki cargo shorts, and sandals.

The man is suspected of Forgery of a Government Instrument, a second degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
