Broken Glass on a Suspect’s Clothing Leads to the Arrest of a Burglar

CCPD received a call for an alarm at a convenience located at the 6300 block of Mcardle. Captain Weber was already in the area and responded.  Upon his arrival, he contacted Ruben Perez 2/7/86 who was walking away from the business.  Ruben was detained and found to have broken glass all over him. The suspect also had was also bleeding from his left calf.  The surveillance video from the store showed Ruben smashing the window and then reaching into the store in an attempt to unlock the doors.  He was booked for burglary of a building.

Burglary to a building is a state jail felony. An individual adjudged guilty of a state jail felony shall be punished by confinement in a state jail for any term of not more than two years or less than 180 days. In addition to confinement, an individual adjudged guilty of a state jail felony may be punished by a fine not to exceed $10,000.

Corpus Christi Police Arrest 22 For Driving While Intoxicated Over Labor Day Weekend

The Corpus Christi Police Department made 22 arrests for driving while intoxicated over the Labor Day Weekend. One such arrest was after a vehicle crash in which the operator of a maroon 2008 Dodge Charger 4 door car travelled the wrong way on the access road of the freeway on South Padre Island Drive at Nile Drive.

The Corpus Christi Police responded to a call for a major vehicle crash in which the Dodge Charger t-boned a 2002 Chevy C/K 1500 pickup truck on the access road at 10:45pm. The operator of the Charger, 20-year-old Jose Villalobos (9/20/1991), told investigating officers he had come from the beach and did not know how he came to travel west in the eastbound lanes of the access road in front of the Whataburger.

Villalobos performed the standardized field sobriety tests. Corpus Christi Police gathered evidence and information, and then concluded that Villalobos was intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway.

Villalobos was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation, and delivered to the city detention center.

A passenger in the truck that was struck by Villalobos complained of a minor injury. There were no other complaints of injury in the crash.

Corpus Christi Police made 662 arrests for Driving While Intoxicated this year to August 28 and collected blood or breath specimens from all but 5 suspects. The average blood alcohol concentration from the suspect’s is .18 which is over twice the legal limit of .08.

The Corpus Christi Police Department urges everyone to think before they drink and have a sober driver.

Suspect in Several Auto Burglaries Arrested

On 8/28/12, Officers responded to an auto burglary at Seaside Villa Apartment, 1011 Ennis Joslin in which a black Ford pick-up truck was used as the getaway vehicle.  The victim reported a cd player was taken from a Mercury Mountaineer.  On 8/23/12, a blue Mitsubishi Eclipse was also burglarized; taken was a backpack and cosmetology kit.

The Police Department’s Auto Theft Task Force was able to explore all criminal activity involving the same vehicle and identify two suspects.  ATTF Detectives were able to link Robert Benavidez (03/23/92) and his girlfriend to the multiple burglaries throughout the city.

Benavidez was arrested at 1122 Shiels by Corpus Christi Police and the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force.  He was charged with the outstanding Parole Warrant for Possession of Controlled Substance and Resisting Arrest.  The case is ongoing and the Benavidez could face additional charges.

Corpus Christi Police Start Marine Safety Patrol

The Corpus Christi boaters will see an additional police presence this Labor Day Weekend.

Corpus Christi Police Officers Josh Swain and Jon McGinley have recently been trained and certified by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as Marine Safety Enforcement Officers. These Corpus Christi Police Officers now have the ability to enforce all safety laws from the Water Safety Act and will patrol the water ways in Corpus Christi.

The Marine Safety Enforcement Officers will address the loud noise complaints from boats, speeding and hazardous boat operations, hunting and fishing violations, and boating while intoxicated violations.

The training and the equipment for this effort has been in cooperation with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Corpus Christi Gulf Beach Rescue at no additional cost to taxpayers. The officers work in cooperation with Game Wardens for the purpose to promote water safety in the Corpus Christi area.

Corpus Christi has miles of waterfront property that include the Corpus Christi Marina, North Beach, Corpus Christi Bay, the Canals of Tropic Isles in Flour Bluff, the Canals of Padre Isles on Padre Island, the Intracoastal Waterway, the recreational ski basin, and the Corpus Christi jurisdiction reaches 3 miles off shore in the Gulf Coast waters off Padre Island.

Three Men Injured During Home Invasion

Officers responded to Bay Area Hospital for a walk-in assault victim who been taken to the hospital by his roommate.  Upon their arrival, Officers found the victim being treated with serious facial and head injuries.   

Further investigation revealed, the three victims were asleep when several masked men entered the residence and began assaulting them.  The men demanded the victims’ money and fled taking one of the victim’s silver 2003 Mercedes CK5. 

The 22-year-old victim was transferred from Bay Area to Spohn Memorial due to the seriousness of his injuries. The other two victims, 22 and 23 years of age were treated by CCFD Emergency Personnel and released.

“Rookie K9 Officer” Makes First Apprehension

Officers were dispatched to a knife attack in which one of the victims had been stabbed in the neck.  Upon their arrival, Officers found the 17-year-old victim amongst a crowd of juveniles in the 3700 block of La Paz.  The victim had multiple stabs wound to his abdomen and neck.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel with non-life threatening injuries. 

Further investigation revealed that juveniles were at the victim’s home when a verbal altercation escalated and the victim was stabbed.  The 16-year-old suspect fled with his 14-year-old sister and his 15-year-old girlfriend.  Police searched for the trio, but were unable to locate them.  The suspect and his sister were both found to be runaways. 

On August 27th, Police were called to 2800 Summer Ridge when a caller reported the suspect involved in the stabbing was hiding in a shed by the ditch.  An Officer arrived to find the suspect and his girlfriend in the area of Summer Ridge and Sandra Lane.  A foot pursuit ensued in which the suspect’s girlfriend interfered, jumping in front of the Officer causing then to collide.  

The suspect was able to escape and hide in the brush.  Patrol Officers set up a perimeter allowing K9 Officer J. Lavastida and his partner “Indy” to search the area.  “Indy” searched the three feet high grass and stopped a foot away from the wanted suspect.  Officer Lavastida reported the suspect was completely covered in tall grass and only a small piece of the suspect’s blue jeans was visible.  

The 16-year-old suspect was detained along with his 15-year-old girlfriend.  They were both booked at the Nueces County Juvenile Justice Center.  She was charged with Interference with Public Duties, a Class “B” Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.  He was charged with the outstanding Nueces County Juvenile warrant for Dangerous Drugs, Runaway and Evading Arrest.  The Evading Arrest is a Class “A” misdemeanor and punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. 

The investigation into the stabbing is still ongoing.

I am Senior Officer Kirk Stowers and I want your help to solve a Hit and Run Crash that seriously injured a woman with your Corpus Christi Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week.

Sunday, August 5th at 8:30 in the evening, a 21 year old woman jogged on Ocean Drive by Palmetto Park. The woman crossed the street at the intersection of Ocean Drive and Poenisch and was then struck by a light colored Sport Utility Vehicle.

The vehicle traveled a block past the crash, stopped for a moment, then sped away toward Ennis Joslin Road without offering any aid to the woman. The woman was transported to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.

Police have information from several witnesses, and have obtained video of the actual crash. The suspect vehicle is described as a light colored Chevy Blazer or GMC Jimmy with front end damage.

Investigators now need your help to locate the vehicle and the individual responsible for this Crash.

UPS Delivery Driver Saves Little Boy

Officers responding to a possible drowning at Kingston Port Apartments arrived to find the crying one-year-old being held by his grandfather.  The child’s 22-year-old mother told Officers they were at the complex swimming pool for a birthday party when her 11-year-old brother noticed his nephew lying in the water.  The uncle pulled his nephew out of the pool and handed him to an adult.

A 32-year-old UPS delivery man heard the commotion and ran over to help.  He administered CPR on the infant who immediately responded by spitting out a bunch of water.  The child was rushed to Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

CCFD Paramedics told Officers that the quick action and prompt response of the delivery driver saved the infant’s life.  Do you know what to do when every second counts?  The American Heart Association and the American Red Cross provide certification classes for CPR, please visit their websites for class information at www.redcross.org and www.heart.org.

 

Motorcyclist Critically Injured in Wreck

Officers were dispatched to a major accident involving a 51-year-old motorcyclist who struck the raised island as he exited the Paul Jones off ramp.  The motorcyclist traveled on and crashed into a yield sign, knocking it down.  

He was ejected from the black 1981 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and sustained a head injury.  Pokice report he was wearing a half helmet.  He was taken to Spohn Memorial for medical treatment.  As of this post, the motorcyclist was listed in critical condition. 

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Police Department’s Traffic Division.

Three Injured in Accident

Officers responded to an accident at the intersection of Ennis Joslin and Pharoah involving a grey Volkswagen Passat and a black Dodge pick-up truck.  The truck struck the Passat and then bounced off, crashing into a concrete wall.  The 15-year-old driver of the Passat sustained minor injuries, while her mother who was traveling with her suffered a broken right wrist.  The driver of the truck had a broken right ankle and all three were taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel.

A witness who was jogging southbound on Ennis Joslin told Police the truck appeared to be driving in excess of 100 M.P.H. when it passed him.  The witness who is a Police Officer in Maryland ran to assist the accident victims. 

Further investigation revealed the driver of the truck had been drinking and a blood draw taken.  He was hospitalized and released to hospital staff due to the extent of his injuries.

The investigation continues and 21-year-old man could face Intoxicated Assault with Vehicle.
