Corpus Christi Police Have A Special Beach Patrol For Summer

The Corpus Christi Police Department has a special patrol unit on the beach this year in an effort to provide additional safety for visitors this summer.

The Beach Patrol unit is staffed by Officer Eric Garza and Officer Eric Smith. Both officers are certified lifeguards and previously worked on the beach for the Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department before they joined the Police Department. Officers Garza and Smith ride in a police vehicle equipped with first aid supplies and rescue equipment which are provided by the beach director, Derek Herzog. Officers Smith and Garza have a special uniform they wear while on duty on the beach which was also provided by the Parks Department.

The duties for Officers Garza and Smith primarily are city ordinance enforcement as it relates to beach safety such as glass containers, fires, unleashed dogs, and traffic enforcement on the beach. The special detail began May 21 and will operate until Labor Day. Officers Garza and Smith will return to normal patrol duty after September 3.

Officers Garza and Smith have participated in the rescue efforts of 3 near drowning events, helped an overturned kayaker in the Packary Channel, helped to locate a missing 5 year old girl on the beach, assisted Ambulance crews with a heart attack patient, and helped with an overturned boater near Beach Marker 199 all since they began the Beach Patrol May 21.

Officers Garza and Smith have been employed with the Corpus Christi Police Department for less than 5 years. The beach patrol is one of many components of the Corpus Christi Police Department other than routine patrol. For those interested in employment with the Corpus Christi Police Department, applications will soon be accepted in anticipation for the police academy scheduled for early 2013.

The base salary for a police cadet as of March 2012 is $3,213 per month. A probationary police officer has a base salary of $45,912 per year. The Corpus Christi Police Officer with less than 5 years on the department has a salary that ranges from $45,912-$54,696 per year.

Flour Bluff Wakes To Graffiti, 1 Apprehended

Corpus Christi police apprehended a 14-year-old boy at 1:45 in the morning at the 700 block of St. Peter for graffiti.

Corpus Christi Police Officer Chris Alejandro patrolled the area around Waldron Park in response to increased activity of graffiti. Officer Alejandro observed a 14-year-old boy out after curfew and saw fresh paint on a nearby stucco wall. Officer Alejandro discovered evidence that the 14-year-old boy was responsible for the graffiti, so the boy was taken into custody and delivered to the Nueces County Juvenile Detention Center.

Patrol Officers discovered 14 other locations in the general area where the 14-year-old was apprehended that were damaged by graffiti. Police have information that there are two other juveniles that may be responsible for the graffiti. Corpus Christi Police Graffiti Detectives continue to investigate these crimes.

The city of Corpus Christi has a curfew that prohibits those 16 years of age and younger from appearing in a public place without the supervision of the parents from 11:00pm until 6:00am for the safety of the children.

Three Caught Surfing With Stolen Boards And Suits

Two 16-year-old boys and an 18-year-old man were taken into police custody charged with burglary of a habitation after they were found surfing with stolen property.

A 63-year-old man found his two surf boards, two wet suits, and other items taken from his garage used by three boys on the beach near Beach Marker 212 at 8:30 Tuesday morning. The 63-year-old man told police his garage door was left open overnight and over $1,500 of surfing gear was taken without permission.

The 63-year-old man went to the beach and found his property used by strangers and then police were called. The property was returned to the owner and the two 16-year-old boys were taken to the juvenile detention center. 18-year-old Jeremy Rodriguez (12/15/1993) was arrested and taken to the city detention center. Burglary of a Habitation is a 2nd degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.

Police encourage prevention to reduce the risk of theft. Police suggest closing garage doors when not in use. Police also suggest to mark property with an owner applied number and record serial numbers of property in order to accurately and clearly make claim to any property that is taken without permission. Rifle Bearing Suspect Arrested

Officers were called out to Farah’s Bar for a disturbance and contacted bar employees in the parking lot.  One of the females was very distraught and appeared to have been assaulted.  Bar employees told Officers the suspect had assaulted his girlfriend, punching her in the face and pushing her to the ground.  The suspect then assaulted another employee who intervened.  A bar employee contacted the owner who returned to the bar to check on the victims’ welfare only to become a victim himself.  The suspect armed with a rifle threatened to kill the bar owner.  As the Officer was talking to the group he observed a male armed with a rifle approximately 30 to 40 feet away walking into the bar. 

Officers apprehended John Alvarez (1105/83) after he walked out the back door of bar and attempted to escape via the Anchor Resort next door.  Unbeknownst to Alvarez, Officers were waiting for him.  Alvarez was arrested and the rifle was recovered.  He was charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon on a Licensed Premise.   Alvarez was also found to have an outstanding warrant. 

 

Police Search For Woman Wanted For Fraud

Corpus Christi Police would like help from the public to locate 34-year-old Kimberly Longbine (7/5/1977). Longbine is wanted for Fraud- illegal use of credit cards. Lonbine’s last known address was in Corpus Christi and Longbine was last known to be in the Corpus Christi area on May 29.

 

Longabine is a white female that stands 5ft. 9 in., weighs 140 pounds, has blonde hair and green eyes and has a scar on her abdomen. Window Smashed On Video

Corpus Christi Police investigators are seeking additional information to identify or locate the individual responsible for criminal mischief in Flour Bluff.

A group of three individuals passed a van in the parking lot of Titan Support Services in the early morning hours and broke the windows to the van. The van is a company vehicle and the act was recorded on video. The three males passed the van when one of the three picked up a rock and threw the rock against the windshield. The male that threw the rock then picked up and threw the rock again at the passenger side window causing the window to break. The value of the damage is about $500.

The male in the video is described as a white or Hispanic male, early twenties or late teens in age and wore jeans, a dark-colored t-shirt, and a baseball cap.

Victim of Robbery Wakes Up in Cemetery

Officers contacted the 22-year-old victim who reported he had been robbed, but was unable to remember any details other being downtown.  The victim was suffering from a facial and head trauma.  He told Officers his money had been taken out of his wallet. The victim was taken to Spohn Memorial by CCFD Emergency Personnel.    

Further investigation revealed, the victim had been found inside one of the Chapels at Seaside Memorial Cemetery and asked to leave by security.  Shortly thereafter, the victim asked for help and the police were called.  

It appeared the victim was intoxicated and unable to provide Officers with any suspect information.  The Police Department encourages anyone with information on this crime to call 888-TIPS or submit a tip online at www.888TIPS.com.  Tips that lead to the arrest of the suspect can receive cash rewards up to a $1,000.

  This week Detectives need your help to identify and locate the individual responsible for a Theft at the Beach Breeze Townhomes located on Windward Drive on Padre Island.

The night of Wednesday, May 16, 2012, a man woke to his dogs barks. The man investigated and discovered the external unit to his central air conditioner unit was damaged. The man also saw that his neighbor’s external air conditioner unit was missing.

The value of the damage and the cost of a new external air conditioner unit is estimated at about $5,000.

Truck Flips Upside Down in Collision, Three Injured

A blue Chevrolet pick-up truck traveling eastbound in the 7200 block of S. Padre Island Drive ran the red light at Rodd Field Road and rear ended a white Saturn Outlook.  The truck bounced off the car and flipped upside down. 

The 54-year-old driver of the Saturn had minor injuries and treated by CCFD Emergency Personnel. The 22-year-old driver sustained a laceration to the head and taken to Spohn Memorial along with his 26-year-old passenger who was slightly injured.  

CCFD Medics turned over a plastic bag containing Marijuana which fell out of the 22-year-old driver’s pocket.  A glass pipe was also found in a pant pocket.  Due to his injuries, the driver of the truck was not arrested, but could face charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Possession of Marijuana.

Police Search for Man Who Exposed Himself to 13-Year-Old

Corpus Christi Homicide/Robbery Detectives are asking the public’s assistance in finding a heavy-set White Male who exposed himself to a 13-year-old.  The victim was walking home from Mireles Elementary School when a black Chevrolet Avalanche passed her by.  As the driver passed by a second time, he opened his door and exposed himself to the victim.  The victim ran home and police were called. 

Officers searched extensively for the driver, but were unable to locate him.  He is described as a heavy-set White male, with wavy reddish brownish hair and last seen wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. He was last seen driving a black Chevrolet Avalanche.  Anyone with any information on this crime is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-TIPS.  The information could result in a reward up to $1000 in cash.

The Corpus Christi Police Department recommends that you talk to your children about “Stranger Danger.”  Please explain to your child who a stranger is and why they should not talk to strangers or accept rides from them.  Let them know if a stranger does approach them, they need to run and tell an adult.  They will call 911.
