Officers Arrest Female In Stolen Car

Date: 10/10/2015       3:55 PM
Location: 700 Airline Road
Offense: Unauthorized use of a Motor Vehicle
P.C. 31.07   State Jail Felony
Case Number: 1510100120
A female was arrested after she stole a Corpus Christi Police Patrol unit.

Corpus Christi Police Officers were originally dispatched to Airline Road and Lum Street after several witnesses called to report a male and female having a disturbance at the bus stop. An Officer arrived and attempted to contact the couple. When he did, the male ran from him. The Officer was able to catch up to the male as he tried to jump a fence. When he was pulled down off the fence, the male suffered an injury to his arm.

While the Officer was chasing the male, the female, jumped into his marked police car and left. Another Officer arriving at the call, observed the stolen police car traveling on Airline Road toward Ocean Drive with the emergency lights on. That Officer got behind the stolen police unit and attempted to stop it using his emergency lights and sirens.

The female driving the police unit turned onto Ocean Drive, on the wrong side of the road, and traveled a short distance before turning onto private property. The female continued to drive to the back of the property and then exited the patrol car and attempted to run on foot.

Officers were able to catch up to the female, Rachel Vigueria (05/20/1989), a short distance away. The female was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest in vehicle, both felony charges. She was additionally charged with evading arrest on foot, and she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for probation violation on an original charge for assault.

The police unit did not appear to have any serious damage done to it.

The male that fled on foot from the officer was being treated at Spohn Memorial Hospital and faces possible charges of evading on foot, a Class B misdemeanor.

Officers Take Female Into Custody On Caribou Drive

Date: 10/10/2015       8:45 AM
Location: 7900 Caribou Drive
Case Number: 1510100112

A 51 year old female homeowner called Corpus Christi Police just after 8:45 AM today to report a disturbance at her home located in the 7900 block of Caribou Drive.

The female said that a female friend of hers, who had been staying with her for the past few weeks, had taken her car and a gun from her home just before 2 AM, following an argument. The female homeowner called police at that time, but Officers did not arrive in time and the female had already left.

Officers were called back at 8:45 by the homeowner, who said her friend had returned and was still armed. When Officers approached the residence, the homeowner came outside and told them that her friend was inside her home and armed with a handgun. The homeowner said that her friend had also made threats to commit suicide and shoot police.

Once the homeowner was safely removed from the residence, Officers attempted to talk to the 45 year old female friend. After unsuccessful attempts to get the female to disarm herself and come outside, the Corpus Christi Police Emergency Response Unit consisting of SWAT Officers and HNT Negotiators responded to the scene at 10 AM.

Negotiators outside of the home were able to communicate with the female inside by cell phone, and loud speaker. After nearly 5 hours of talking to the female, she exited the back door of the residence and was taken into custody.

She was transported to Spohn Memorial Hospital and will have a mental health evaluation. The female does have an outstanding warrant for her arrest for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle that will be served when she is released.

Gone Fishin’

A few Corpus Christi Police and several Animal Care Service Officers spent a little time fishing today.

ACS received a call that a pet store, located in the 3800 block of Saratoga Boulevard, was without power and the owner had not cared for the aquatics in his store for several days. Police and ACS went to the business and got the power turned back on so the fish tanks inside would be able to pump air.

They also learned that the owner of the pet store had been arrested in McAllen, Texas and would not be returning any time soon. They were unable to locate any other business partners or employees from the pet store to come rescue the animals, so they took it upon themselves to contact the Texas State Aquarium and the Aquarium at Rockport Harbor to help save the fish.

CCPD, ASC, and aquarium staffers then spent several hours trying to scoop several hundred fish from nearly thirty tanks. They then transferred the scooped fish into containers so they could be taken to the aquariums.

In all several hundred small fish, frogs, coral, crabs and other small ocean animals were rescued.

First Friday Fun Fact

The Corpus Christi Police Department has a campaign called “First Friday Fun Fact” that will focus on different Texas traffic laws.  It will run on the first Friday of each month. Here is this month’s traffic fact.

U-turns
A common area of confusion regards U-turns.  It seems everyone has a different idea of what is legal and isn’t regarding U-turns.  There is only one state law specifically regarding U-turns: §545.102, which prohibits a U-turn if you are not visible within 500 feet of approaching traffic.  Otherwise, U-turns are allowed anywhere as long as there is not a sign or local ordinance prohibiting it.  If you want to make a U-turn at a traffic light, you cannot do so unless the left turn signal is green or, if there is no left turn signal, the light for through traffic is green.  Whenever you make a U-turn, you must, of course, yield to oncoming traffic just as if you were making a left turn.

U_Turn

Transportation Code Section 545.102. TURNING ON CURVE OR CREST OF GRADE

An operator may not turn the vehicle to move in the opposite direction when approaching a curve or the crest of a grade if the vehicle is not visible to the operator of another vehicle approaching from either direction within 500 feet.

Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile

The Corpus Christi Police Department has received information that a mosquito, trapped near the area of Redbird Lane and Avenue C, has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

Vector Control will begin spraying for mosquitos this evening and will continue for three (3) consecutive days (evening). The spray area will encompass a one-mile radius near the trap location. The traps in the area will continue to be monitored on a daily basis. The course of action will be dictated by any further detection of the West Nile virus.

Each morning the trap will be checked for mosquitos that will then be sent off for testing.

Citizens near the area are asked to take preventative measures. Vector Control is also asking parents to be mindful during outdoor sporting activities.

  • Citizens are asked to use mosquito repellent with DEET.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants and consider staying indoors when mosquitos are most active, that being dusk and dawn.
  • Get rid of standing water in outdoor flower pots, buckets or barrels.
