The 2015 Patriot Run has been cancelled due to stormy weather. There will not be a make up run. The Corpus Christi Police Department thanks everyone for their support and understanding.

The Corpus Christi Police Department responded to 975 calls for service and generated 204 reports for formal criminal complaints from 7:00 a.m. September 10 to 7:00 a.m. on September 11, 2015. These are samples of the criminal complaints filed by the Corpus Christi Police for that time period.

Corpus Christi Police and the Fire Department responded to a home, located in the 5600 block of Ventura Lane, for two vehicles that were on fire in the driveway.

When Officers arrived they found a 2007 Nissan Maxima and a 2007 Chrysler 300 on fire just outside the garage.

Both vehicles were a total loss with damage estimates being $65,000. At this time, no suspects have been identified.

This year marks the 14th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001. In an effort to honor the brave First Responders who made great sacrifices on our behalf on that day, as well as honoring the late Police Chief Floyd Simpson we are announcing the 5th annual Patriot 5K Run & Walk. Registration for this event will be capped at 1500 participants. Registration is free courtesy of the Corpus Christi Police Foundation.

Packet Pickup:
Due to the large number of participants in this event, packet pickup will be held over a three-day period.  Here is the most current information on packet pickup.

Wednesday, September 9 (11am to 6pm):  Firehouse Subs, 6418 S. Staples, Suite 140, Corpus Christi, TX 78413.  Firehouse Subs is located in the Saratoga Town Center at the intersection of Saratoga and S. Staples.  Firehouse Subs is located in the same shopping center as the Kohls department store.

Thursday, September 10 (11am to 6pm):  HEB Plus, 5313 Saratoga Blvd, Corpus Christi, TX 78413.  HEB Plus is located on Saratoga between the Everhart and S. Staples.  HEB Plus is close to Niko’s Steakhouse.

Friday morning, September 11 (9am to 1pm):  Bay Area Bicycles, 6020 South Padre Island Drive, Corpus Christi, TX 78412.  Bay Area Bicycles is located in the Gulfway Shopping Center.  Bay Area Bicycles is located at the intersection of Airline and SPID.

Race Day Packet Pickup will only be available from 4 pm. to 5:30 pm on Friday, September 11 at McCaughan Park.  Please try to attend Packet Pickup on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning.  You may send someone to Packet Pickup to obtain your packet.

This commemoration is sponsored by the Corpus Christi Police Foundation, a not-for-profit whose mission it is to create a safer Corpus Christi by strengthening the bond between the Corpus Christi Police Department and the citizens it serves.  In an effort to include and encourage as many people as possible who wish to participate in honoring our First Responders and the late Chief Floyd Simpson, there will be no entry fee for participation.  Participation is limited to the first 1500 participants who register.  In addition, all registered participant will receive a free commemorative t-shirt courtesy of the event sponsors.

6:00pm:  Opening ceremonies honoring First Responders and the late Chief Floyd Simpson
6:30pm:  5K Run & Walk
7:00pm:  Post event festivities including food, drink and music for registered participants
7:30pm:  Awards Ceremony – (Awards will not be mailed)

Music by the “The Rockaholics” after the awards ceremony. Several food trucks will be available at the park.

McCaughan Park, 850 Shoreline Blvd, Corpus Christi, TX 78401.  McCaughan Park (across from McGee Beach) is located on Shoreline Blvd down the street from the First United Methodist Church. McCaughan Park is located at the intersection of Furman and Shoreline Blvd along the bayfront.

Parking:
Free parking is available in the North parking lot between McCaughan Park and Sherrill Park. Additional free parking is available along the City streets in the area around the Sherrill Park. Paid parking may also be available at surrounding are lots that are privately owned.  The parking lot adjacent to McCaughan Park is reserved for Police and Fire emergency vehicles.

Events:
5K Run & Walk for Ages 4 and Up – Children 6 and under must have adult supervision with them on the course.  This is a family friendly event so families are encouraged to participate together.

Strollers are allowed on the course but should seed themselves at the back of the starting pack. For the safety of all participants, pets are not allowed on the event course.  Exceptions for service animals will be made on a case by case basis.  Please contact the Race Director if you will be participating with a certified service animal.

Pendgo Timing working with Athlete Guild will provide timing for the 5K Run & Walk.  Athlete Guild uses only state-of-the-art equipment.  You will be issued a race bib with a disposable timing chip attached during Packet Pickup. You will not be asked to stand in a long line at the event waiting for someone to give you a shoe chip. You will also not be chased down by someone trying to cut-off your chip after the event.  Athlete Guild is now working with Pendgo Timing in our local community.

Corpus Christi Police responded to a call about two children left in a vehicle that was parked in the driveway of a home located in the 2600 block of Presa Street.

Before arriving Officers were informed that CPR was being administered to a 4 month old boy that was pulled out of the car, covered in sweat, and not breathing.  It is unknown at this time who was performing CPR on the child.

When Officers arrived, they determined that not only was the boy inside the car, but so was his 16 month old sister.  The little girl was checked by CCFD EMS but she did not appear to be injured.

The little boy was transported by CCFD EMS to Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.

Detectives responded to the scene, and are trying to determine how long the children were inside the Ford Fusion that was parked in the driveway of the home.

The Corpus Christi Police Department has a campaign called “First Friday Fun Fact” that will focus on different Texas traffic laws.  It will run on the first Friday of each month. Here is this month’s traffic fact. 

Turning from and into the correct lane Imagine you are on a street approaching an intersection and there are four lanes to the right of the center marked like the illustration above.  I have seen people turn left from lane B and/or turn right from lane C.  The law only allows you to turn left from the far left lane or to turn right from the far right lane; when there are dedicated turn lanes, such as in the example above, those lanes fulfill those roles.  So if you’re in lanes B or C above, you are only permitted to go straight.  If lanes A and D did not exist in the example above, then you could turn left or go straight from lane B or turn right or go straight from lane C. In Texas, when turning right, you are required to turn both from the right lane and into the right lane unless there is an obvious safety reason not to. When turning left, however, you are permitted to turn into any lane designated for traffic headed in that direction and it is recommended that you pick the lane that interferes least with other traffic.  The exception is if you’re turning left from a one-way street onto another one-way street; in that case, you must turn into the left lane.  Also, if you are turning from one of two lanes designated for the same turn movement (i.e. dual turn lanes like at S.P.I.D. and S. Staples Street), then you must turn into the appropriate lane as indicated by signs and/or pavement markings.

• 545.101 – TURNING AT INTERSECTION

(a) To make a right turn at an intersection, an operator shall make both the approach and the turn as closely as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

(b) To make a left turn at an intersection, an operator shall:

(1) approach the intersection in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to a vehicle moving in the direction of the vehicle; and

(2) after entering the intersection, turn left, leaving the intersection so as to arrive in a lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of the vehicle on the roadway being entered.

(c) On a street or roadway designated for two-way traffic, the operator turning left shall, to the extent practicable, turn in the portion of the intersection to the left of the center of the intersection.

(d) To turn left, an operator who is approaching an intersection having a roadway designated for one-way traffic and for which signs are posted from a roadway designated for one-way traffic and for which signs are posted shall make the turn as closely as practicable to the left-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

(e) The Texas Transportation Commission or a local authority, with respect to a highway in its jurisdiction, may:

(1) authorize the placement of an official traffic-control device in or adjacent to an intersection; and

(2) require a course different from that specified in this section for movement by vehicles turning at an intersection.

A reminder that things can happen very quickly when you are driving.

This video was captured by the dash camera of a Corpus Christi Police Department patrol unit as it sat parked on the side of the road in the 700 block of Brownlee Boulevard on August 20.

The 2011 Toyota Corolla was traveling west on Mary Street when it fail to yield the right of way at a stop sign and struck a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck traveling south on Brownlee Boulevard.

The Chevrolet was then forced off the road and into a wooden fence and also into a parked GMC truck  in the 1600 block of Mary Street.

The driver of the at fault vehicle was taken to Spohn Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. She was issued a citation for running the stop sign.

Three other people in the Chevrolet truck were not injured.
