9-11   5K Run Honoring Coastal Bend First Responders

On Saturday, September 7, 2013, the second annual Patriot 5K Fun Run & Walk will take place in memory of the 12^th anniversary of September 11, 2001.  The event honors all of those who are first to respond in times of emergency, including all present and past members of the Armed Forces, Police Officers, Firefighters and Paramedics, Sheriff’s Deputies, Department of Public Safety Troopers, Constable’s Officers, State and Federal Officers and Dispatchers.

The run will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. at Sherrill Park, 222 S. Shoreline Drive.  The event is free to all active and retired first responders.  Kids 12 and under will cost $10, while adult non-first responders will cost $25.  Everyone will receive a t-shirt and a bib number for finish line timing.  Race day registration will take place from 6:30 a.m. until 7:15 a.m.  Participants may also go online to www.vfitproductions.com to register or to print out entry forms which can be mailed to:

The event will begin with a patriotic ceremony at 7:00 a.m. at Sherrill Park, with the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi and the Patriot Guard Riders of South Texas.  The 5K course will take place along the sea wall with a loop around the People Street T-Head and a turnaround in front of the bayfront.  Afterwards, participants can tour different law enforcement displays.  For more information contact DeAnna McQueen at (361) 826-2940.

CCPD Town Hall Meeting

Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson has scheduled a Town Hall Meeting for Thursday, August 29, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers located at 1201 Leopard Street. The public is invited to this open meeting to discuss the upcoming changes regarding police efficiency and revised police response to alarm calls without permits, minor crashes, barking dogs (animal calls) and child discipline issues. During the meeting there will be an opportunity for members of the audience to ask questions.

Chief Simpson will also discuss the proposed “distracted driving”  ordinance and the ongoing Aggressive Driving initiative.

A second town hall meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Del Mar Center for Economic Development, 3209 S. Staples, Room 106.

The Corpus Christi Police Department remembers Patrol Officer John William Sartain who was shot and killed by a sniper on August 20, 1971 at 11pm.

Officer Sartain walked to his patrol unit to begin his shift with partner, Gilbert Lazo. A 16 year old sniper shot Officer Sartain in the head from an apartment 200 yards away. Officer Sartain was 22 years of age and is survived by a wife and daughter.

The sniper pled not guilty to the charges and was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in 1971. He was later paroled in 1984.

Corpus Christi’s founder, Henry L. Kinney, named many of the city streets after nature, including one of the city’s original streets; Laguna St. Laguna St. was renamed in 1991 as John Sartain St.

CCACS has made progressive strides in services to the community, efforts towards increased adoptions, and more efficient responses to calls of service. Corpus Christi Animal Care Services along with PAAC volunteers invite the public, rescue groups, and charitable groups, to attend the Rachel Ray 100K Challenge Event this weekend 08/17 and 08/18 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

Due to the generosity of a private sponsor, all adoption fees are being paid for through the donor.  All adoptable animals are FREE on 08/17 and 08/18.

This includes spay/neuter, city registration, micro chipping, and age appropriate vaccinations.

Included in the weekend event will be family friendly fun and games; bounce house, balloons, hotdogs, dancing and much more.  Entry to the event is FREE. Donations of cat litter are greatly needed.

As the end-of-challenge event, adoption fees of all animals will be reduced as follows:

“9 Lives for $9” (all cats)

“Drop a 10 and bring home a friend” ($10 all dogs)

These prices include spay/neuter, city registration, micro chipping, and age appropriate vaccinations.

Included in the weekend event will be family friendly fun and games; bounce house, balloons, hotdogs, dancing and much more.  Entry to the event is FREE. Donations of goods will be greatly appreciated. Tangible donations of Fresh-step cat litter, flea collars, and towels are requested. These items are immediately needed to assist with current animals at the shelter.
